^you're one to talk about wanting to fire herb without knowledge of the matter. All you do is throw out '20 wins 20 wins 20 wins 20 wins" and " 5 straight tournaments 5 straight tournaments 5 straight tournaments 5 straight tournaments 5 straight tournaments ".Anyone who blindly supports herb without even questioning his acomplishments doesnt know jack shit about basketball. Even if you support him, as I did until recently, you have to admit that he makes the same mistakes year after year after year. Now the question is, do you want to put up with that???If you do, then you might be a better person, but accepting mediocrity isnt something most fans can handle. As I keep saying, I want a change. Now, that might include firing Herb, but I would also accept Herb admitting his mistakes and publicly making an effort to correct them.
3/14/2006 2:19:34 PM
i'm not blindly supporting him. i have questioned his decisions, i still do. that doesn't change the fact that i think he's the right coach for nc state. there is nothing mediocre about our team.
3/14/2006 2:20:49 PM
21 wins
3/14/2006 2:24:32 PM
3/14/2006 2:25:35 PM
And Wake Forest had 17 wins. Sorry, but with the cupcake out of conference schedule we play there is no reason to not have 21 wins.
3/14/2006 2:26:16 PM
Our OOC schedule wasn't that bad. EVERY team plays shitty teams. That is why the RPI SOS is meaningless when evaluating teams honestly. It values the cupcakes in a ridiculous manner. If you play teams ranked b/t 150-200 you're SOS is astronomically higher then the team that plays 250-300 cupcake teams. When in reality a good team will beat up on EITHER subset of crappy teams. This is why Duke was still the #1 RPI team even though both Nova and UConn had better and more quality wins.As far as State we beat Tourney teams OOC such as Alabama and GW, we lost to tourney teams in Seton Hall and Iowa, and we also played a good (talent wise but their record didn't reflect it) ND team. Hardly a schedule full of cupcakes.. No more or less then most other schools around here..
3/14/2006 2:29:22 PM
and we still play those cupcakes close.
3/14/2006 2:31:24 PM
talk about a 180- nuts macker
3/14/2006 2:31:59 PM
truth hurts.
3/14/2006 2:32:31 PM
Alabama, GW, Iowa, ND, etc arent cupcakes
3/14/2006 2:35:12 PM
we should have won all of those games. But we only beat GW, alabama, and ND and ND sucks.
3/14/2006 2:38:48 PM
ND doesnt suckand we won 3/4Iowa was a big10 title contender, i dont think losing to them by 3 on theri court early in the year is a disaster.our play was a disaster
3/14/2006 2:43:52 PM
3/14/2006 2:45:04 PM
3/14/2006 2:49:42 PM
why don't you quote the last BC game where in the last 5 possessions we ran the same play with the same result and lost?
3/14/2006 2:52:17 PM
CAN SOMEONE SERIOUSLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION?IF NOT, THEN WHY SHOULD WE GET RID OF THE CURRENT COACH?YOU DONT GIVE SOMEONE A BRAIN TRANSPLANT WHEN YOU HAVE NO BRAIN TO PUT BACK IN.
3/14/2006 2:56:27 PM
As it has been stated many times over, there are coaches who would want to come here who would die for the opportunity.

3/14/2006 3:03:51 PM
^^I'm not suggesting that we replace Herb. I was just providing some examples of coaches that would love to come here. They're all alumni, and I'm DAMN SURE THEY REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF BEATING CAROLINA AND DUKE!!!!
3/14/2006 3:05:15 PM
I just simply don't think Barnes is going to leave Texas. He is set there. Why leave? Fact is we don't have the first clue if he really would. Personally, I don't like him for a laundry list of reasons I don't feel like getting into on here right now because I have some work to finish up before 5.. if this thread is still going tomorrow I'll get back to it.^ well I just don't see them as feasable. Herb understands the importance of beating rivals. Make no mistake about that. It's whether or not he can DO THAT ever that is the question[Edited on March 14, 2006 at 3:06 PM. Reason : x]
3/14/2006 3:05:40 PM
3/14/2006 3:08:10 PM

and if he wont leave Texas (ie: pulls a Roy ala 2000)? Then who? You have to have at least 3 prospects.
3/14/2006 3:12:11 PM
It's pointless to argue about who would and wouldn't come here. There's not an opening and there probably wont be one. You never know if a coach will consider it unless you ask. NC State is a much much much better job than many of you give it credit for (On ESPNU today Steve Lavin had us just inside the top 10... he listed the top 8, and we were the first program we mentioned as honorable mention). Barnes does have it made, but there are a shitload of connections with this area and this school... too many to just laugh and call everyone idiots who thinks he would consider it. I think if we were to hire an "established" coach, he'd be our best shot. Not saying he's my #1... but I do think he's a better coach than Herb and would have us "back" in no time (referring to perrenial top 10 ranking)And luigi.... I don't think we'll look for another coach this year just becuase of everyone's contracts. My guess is we'd attempt to contact Calipari, Karl Hobbs, Mike Anderson, Mark Few, and a few others that Athletic Directors know more about becuase it's their job... but I think with Pearl and Jay Wright singing huge bonuses plus a weak coaching pool, we'll take our chances with Herb (Or rather, I don't think we're looking to hire another coach regardless, our administration backs Herb). It would be interesting to see barnes coach herenot going to happen though
3/14/2006 3:14:19 PM
yes to Mike Anderson
3/14/2006 3:19:12 PM
whoever said earlier in this thread that this team was primed to go to the sweet 16 ever since herb got here really doesn't have a clue.Herb was left with absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing. I would argue that it took him 2-3 years to get rid of all of the crap (including the players at the current time) and then another 3-5 to get the players he wanted in here to develop them. We had to win a little b4 he could even recruit who he wanted to recruit. I would argue that this team has only been "primed" to go to the sweet 16 the last 3 years and we have made it once and got screwed by the refs another time (UCONN). We might make it again this year, and he has now recruited 2 md AA's sandwiched in b/t duke and unc and we have a sure fire md AA (at least a 5 star) in chris wright. He had to rid this program of all of the garbage that les robinson corroded it with before he could even worry about getting the talent level up. He had to try to win w/ what he had at the beginning. He did that. People screamed our recruiting had to improve. It did and is continuing to. People screamed that we had to do better in the tourney, we have done that 2 of the past 3. NOw people are saying anything short of a NC is not good enough. While this is completely unfair to demand a NC of any team, it may happen one day. You never know. But he has done everything that the fans screamed for up to this point except win every single game, which is unreachable.
3/14/2006 3:19:59 PM
Not unreachable (See NCSU 1973).... But GOOD POINTS!^
3/14/2006 3:27:22 PM
73 >.<
3/14/2006 3:28:57 PM
i think nc state fans live in the past even more than ucla fans. imagine THAT.
3/14/2006 3:30:35 PM
I think we might even check out Gregg Marshall, and I wouldn't be too much against it. You can't tell how good a coach will be unless you put him in the situation.... coach K proved that. Going from strictly memory, his record at Army the year before Duke hired him was something like an awesome 18-11.... but Bob Knight swore he was the man for the job. You never know... NC State is a huge draw for recruiting and you can find a diamond in the roughLike I said, I don't think Herb leaves. I don't think we should fire Herb. If Herb doesn't switch offenses then I'm going to continue to support a replacement, but this isn't the year to do it. I think there's talent out there, but not an abundance to choose from this year. Herb will be back. This is all fun and games... and nothing more.
3/14/2006 3:31:54 PM
^the only point i struggle with is that NC State is a huge draw for recruitinghow exactly is that? we sit in between Duke and UNC. That right there hurts recruiting a decent amount. I doubt our championship banner from 1974 really draws them in, and while '83 might just a little b/c of the magical run it prob. doesn't help all that much either. If it is our offense that attracts a certain type of player, you can't ask Herb to change offenses and bring in good recruits. I do believe that NC State can definitely attract recruits through facilities and things of that nature. But I think Herb is doing that with 2 AA's and another on the way. He might could get another one for 2007, that recruiting season is far from over.
3/14/2006 3:37:27 PM
Let's hire Johnny Dawkins!!!!
3/14/2006 3:39:52 PM
3/14/2006 3:40:09 PM
^i wish that were true
3/14/2006 3:41:04 PM
3/14/2006 3:51:13 PM
you're right....it does help draw recruits, but it is unfair to compare us to Duke and UNC when those two programs get WAY more of a pick of whoever they want than everyone else in the countryNCSU may have a much larger talent pool to choose from than some, but most fans are so mad right now b/c of one the slump right now and 2. our records against duke and unc. I think herb has shown we have more of a talent pool because of our recent tourney improvement. we were one of the best 16 teams in the country last year and can hopefully be one of those teams again.
3/14/2006 4:00:26 PM
What makes you realize how tough it is here is to look at all of our top recruits. Most of them have UNC and Duke listed as their highest choices, when those schools haven't offered them.Chris Wright, for example, wanted to play for one of those schools, even with offers from us, Nova, and plenty of other national names. I'm glad he jumped the gun and signed with us.Julian Vaughn, who was a big target of ours earlier (not so much now, I don't think), listed those two as his top schools--when they hadn't offered, and plenty of national names had.And the list goes on.
