Do you need to have your license when you go to court? I lost mine the other night and have a speeding ticket to take care of on Thursday. I need to know if I should go wait in line at the DMV before then for a duplicate or if I can just order one online and not worry about having it asap.

PJC: Yes, I know i should save it for something big but I am not planning on getting arrested as the worst thing that i would get is another speeding ticket. May as well use it now, cause I cannot afford this one right now.

What is involved in a PJC, do I need an attorney or can I just call the courthouse? I got an illegal pass as well as a ticket (although it was just 69 in a 55, which is easily reduced) - what's the best advice to do?

On speeding in South Carolina...

Just dont do it. Especially on 95. When I was 18, coming back from Florida, I received a ticket going 81 in a 65. Cop was a total ass even though I was polite. I didnt know any better at the time (there was no internet), and I just paid the ticket. Some month or two later, I get a notice for the DMV to come and surrender my license. I had to have a meeting with some special officer at the DMV to ask that my license not be suspended. She was nice, and after a lecture, said it would be suspended. But the insurance rates I paid for that ticket cost myself (and unfortunately my mom) a lot of money. Near the trail end of the 3 year period, I had just purchased a 300ZX convert. My insurance was close to $300 a month for 4 months...

one of the few responses to that already was that i said i wasn't intentionally speeding after saying that i thought i was going 51 in a 45. to clarify that, i actually thought i was going not much over 45 in a 45, anywhere from 45-50 or whatever i would believe, as it was downhill around where the cop was. all i meant by my "not intentionally" comment was that i wasn't intending to be doing 16mph over the limit.

i fully acknowledge that i made a mistake. i'm not trying to act like i'm above the law or don't deserve to be ticketed for that. all i'm trying to find out is what the best thing to do is. again it's 51 in a 35, it's my first ticket ever, and this happened back in Winston-Salem.

i'd appreciate any suggestions about what to do regarding this ticket. thanks.

it seems like a lot of people are able to get this reduced no problem on their own, i just don't know how. is this really a situation i'd need a lawyer for, with no prior infractions?

You can get a reduction, but it will still be $110 plus and it is not the best option.

An attorney will cost $150-200 more and you don't have to worry about appearing in court or subsequent tickets.

I got a 80 in a 65 in Alamance County a few weeks ago.

I have prior tickets, but got lawyers for all of them. Pretty sure they were all reduced to 9 over.

That was also ~ 3 years ago.

Should I just go to court and ask them to reduce it? If they wont, can I ask for a continuance and get a lawyer?

yeah he wrote a fine for $50 and the court costs are listed at $120. so that's $170 and an attorney would be another $150-$200?

if i can get it reduced without doubling the amount of cash i'm shelling out here, why would i want to pay an attorney? this is my first ticket and i don't expect to be getting more.

is paying that much more for an attorney really the best way to go?

^1st offense get it reduced to 9 over yourself, it's as simple as walking in and standing in line. They will likely ask you if you want to reduce it to 9 over without you even having to mention it. You have to pay the fines, but it doesn't fuck up your insurance rates.

^^Depends on how confident you are that you won't get another ticket in the next 3 years, as well as how much it is worth to avoid the time/hassle of appearing in court. You should have no problems getting it reduced to 9 over, which won't hit insurance this time, but a lawyer could probably get it reduced to a non-moving violation.

well i went 6 years without getting one at all, so another 3 doesn't seem so unreasonable. but i assume the non-moving violation route would mean another ticket isn't the end of the world if i were to get one.

does anyone have recommendations of attorneys they've had good experiences with in dealing with similar situations?

Many counties have severely restricted the ability of speeding tickets to be reduced to non-moving violations (especially the improper equipment option).

If this is in Wake County and you end up not just getting it reduced yourself then get James Crouch. However, your best bet if you're short on money would be to do this one yourself and if you somehow get another ticket within the next 3 years then you could obtain a lawyer to fight that ticket.

ok so question, i can go and try and get it reduced on my own and then if it doesn't get reduced i can get a lawyer to do it? that sounds kind of weird, really not sure how that works. is there nothing to lose in trying it on your own first before getting a lawyer?

and would there be any reason to consider going the pjc route? i don't really plan on needing it for anything more serious.

^^Don't use a PJC for this. Plea to 9 over to keep if off your insurance. That way, you will still have your PJC for any other violation that might occur within the next 3 years.

With an attorney, unless things have changed, improper equipments are attainable in Forsyth County. They are very difficult to get in Wake County.

Tickets come in threes. I received my first ticket 4 years ago and have gotten 2 more since, all reduced to nonmoving violations. 1 point on your insurance means an increase of 25%.

Call a few lawyers and get prices to take care of this.

Yes you do, it's just priced into the cost of the lawyer.

NcWOLFsu trust me I worked in traffic court and other courtrooms for about a year and for your first offense the smart thing to do is to take care of this yourself (they ask you if you want to do this it's very simple). Also, your insurance will not increase.

If you end up getting another ticket then you can get a lawyer to fight that ticket. The only way I would see you getting a lawyer for this ticket would be if it's a complete hassle to get down there that day (getting off work, loss of pay, a test, or some other shit).

I handled numerous tickets in Harnett and Johnston County on the attorney side this summer. I never had to pay a fine on behalf of a client, just court costs. It may depend on the county. The reasoning is that the party paid the attorney to appear and no further monetary deterence is necessary.

The first ticket does not affect insurance, but the second reduction will.

By the way, do not -ever- pay a ticket and plead guilty to any speeding violation that lists you as exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph or more. To be safe, I wouldn't even exceed 15.

The DMV will suspend your license automatically if you are convicted of exceeding the posted speed limit by 20 mph.

I got pulled the other day on edwards mill. The cop was really nice, he said I was going 15 over (it was probably a little more) and he lowered it to just 4 over! If I go to court, don't they usually just dismiss this? Do you think the cop might try to appeal it thinking I'm taking advantage of the situation?

I just got a ticket for doing 65 in a 45 on old stage road in Garner. State Trooper in an unmarked burgundy charger traveling in the opposite direction. I was trying to catch up to a DB9 that was about a half mile ahead of me.

Really sucks because I just bought a new Passport 9500i like 2 weeks ago, though I don't know if a V1 would have saved me or not, it was instant on right after cresting a hill with no traffic in front of me for 1/4-1/2 mile.

Pretty sure I'm going to return the 9500i for a V1. Ahmet and I went to look at a car today in Goldsboro with his V1 and my 9500i and we passed a sheriff with someone pulled over. The V1 was going off a good half mile before the 9500i started making any noise...

^^ I don't think a V1 would fair much better. I have been using my V1 with POP protection since May with usually good results and good warning. But it didn't save my ass last time. Long story short, was racing a friend, had my V1 on, friend had a Passport 8500 X50, and none of ours went off and the fuzz was behind us too.

I'm guessing this was a ticket from an officer and not a red-light camera? If so, my advice is always to get a good lawyer. James Crouch seems pretty good around here.

I'm in the same boat. Got one last week for a stop sign. It was a real dickhead move IMO, but complaining isn't going to do any good.
