Nobody seems to get upset when I wear my "Bonnie Blue" t-shirt. Nor do you hear people bitching about the "Stars and Bars", or the "Stainless" flags. You never see people get upset about the First, Second, or Third National Flags of the Confederacy. Mostly because they don't realize that they ever exhisted (which goes back to the history argument). The reason people get upset with the Battle Flag of the Confederacy is due to the fact that it has been associated with those few groups of supremacists who decided to use it as an emblem to represent themselves. However, wearing it as a symbol of pride is no less acceptable than wearing any other item for the same reason. My "Bonnie Blue" t-shirt is a symbol of the South just as much as the battle flag is, but because no "hate groups" embraced it, it is more acceptable to wear. Wear what you want, but be able to defend it intelligently, not simply with a "I don't care what other people think" kind of attitude.

I would say the same thing, except that we all interact with blacks all the time, just in bad contexts (like working at McD's, or seeing them on the news like this), where a few of the douches get a chance to make their impression.

If you look on page 14 there, all three groups they studied (blacks, whites, hispanics) are doing considerably better educationally than 30 years ago, but the blacks have been the only group to get slightly worse at points during the past 10 years (dipping in the mid-90s and in 99). Why is this? I've always thought that the black community was culturally damaged by racism from the pre-civil rights era, which accounts for a lot of the poverty in the black community today (their grandparents could get good educations, which affected their parents, which affects the current gen), but culturally, in some ways they've seemed to taken some steps back from the post-civil rights era. What would Martin Luther King Jr. say to the black community today, if he were somehow zapped from the past to now(yeah, i know i'm ripping this from the Boondocks episode)? To the significant amount (from my daily observations, I would guess around 50%) of blacks who value education and respect, he would cheer for them, but I think he would sneer at the other half that over-value "hip-hop" culture and the ones that call their friends "white" for doing good in school.
