well, maybe i was confused but i thought she was only going to keep the top 6. But her syllabus just says 12.5% of our grade is quizzes....so it just sucks to be me

We went over the rest of Ch 14 and started 15... just that its 58 questions, 20% on 2nd half of 14 and all of 15. The other 80% comes directly from old tests. So... nothing other than what was in the e-mail she sent out.

I saw this thread about Barnes and had to throw in my two cents, because I had her last semester. Her class was probably my worst experience at NCSU thus far.

First, the fact that she takes SHRM money for extra credit is ludicrous, and I find it hard to believe that the school does not have a clear policy about using monetary reward systems.

I have to admit that I am biased about HR in general. I worked a few corporate jobs at large companies before starting my degree here at State and found that, in the "real world," employees of basically every other function of the business collectively looked down upon the HR function as nothing more than a necessary waste of money. Really, HR professionals are not much more than glorified record keepers and fact checkers.

I have found that HR people tend to "puff up" and exaggerate the importance of their job more so than any other professionals. This generalization of mine was only reinforced after taking Barnes's BUS 330 class. Being a 300 level course, I expected to learn some of the most important aspects of the HR function while going into a few select topics a little bit deeper. In other words, I expected the class to have the same relativley easygoing flow of my other 300 level business classes.

What happened, however, was the exact opposite. Barnes treated every little subtopic and random factoid as if they were of critical importance and designed her tests in such a way they measured the students ability to memorize mountains of irrelevant facts. Expecting students to rely heavily on memorization rather than grasping core concepts and their relationships is a crude form of teaching at best.

An easier way to explain why I found her teaching ineffective and her class a waking nightmare would be to compare her to ideal 300 level business teachers like Sloan for finance and Gooner for marketing. If you take Sloan for 320 for example, you will find that he covers a mountain of finance material but only emphasizes the truly critical aspects of the subject. This way the student without any particularly strong interest in finance can master the essence of the subject without undergoing unnecessary suffering.

For me, Barnes was the tip of the iceberg who reinforced my negative generalizations of the human resource function of a business. There are other legitimate complaints worth mentioning, but I believe it would suffice to say that Barnes, while certainly a lovely and pleasant lady otherwise, has ample space for improvement as an instructor.
