notre dame played perhaps their worst game of the season
ohio state played pretty darn good (according to the announcers who were just amazed)

it was still close

I was curious about this one, so I did some searching around cfbdatawarehouse.com

South Carolina had a streak of 8 bowl losses ranging from 1946 to 1988. That's the longest I've seen (although I will freely admit I didn't look through every single team). There are several teams that went through seven consecutive losses.

Alabama also had a streak of 8 non-wins with a tie in the middle of it.

the announcers were all about ND from 30 minutes before hand until they started getting there asses kicked. So dont start about them just slurping OSU. I was getting really tired of hearing "Weis this, Weis that, etc"

It's just announcers trying to catch the winner early and if they dont their tunes change, it's nothing new.
