I've never heard that God made the world look a certain way to trick us, but rather that the Devil influenced events to that same end.

Sure you have; just as two separate myths.

i. The Earth is 6,000 years old.
ii. Dinosaur bones appear to be substantially (over 10,000 times) older than that, but only because god made them that way to test your faith in (i).

Edit: You would have heard it if you watched TDS tonight...it is getting sad how predictable Daily Show inspired posts in Soap Box are.
