My favorite is the can man. I cant remember his name right now, but he is always searching around looking for cans. He never asks for money.

He just says he likes to walk around parks and streets during nice days and collects cans to help him live. Pretty cool guy, said he graduated from Duke, but Im not sure about that

also- the lady in the library who never leaves. What is her deal? She has to have a login of some sort to use the computers for that long doesn't she?

Can man's cool. He used to come through our yard early in the day to go through our recycling bins.

My (least) favorite was the dude who hit me up at KFC during high school repeatedly. Strange how your daughter repeatedly gets appendicitis, and your car consistently breaks down in the exact same spot. You think you'd get that fixed after the first three or four times.

Some guy is always (or at least when I go there) outside the Food Lion on Lake Wheeler asking for change. The last time he asked me, he was wearing a silver chain in khakis and (new) Timberland boots. I just shook my head at this dumbass when I went inside. I guess you have to dress to impress when you beg.

I usually tell them to fuck off, get a job.

Once i did give some $ (about 2) to a guy with the gas story although it was slightly less stupid of a story (there was no girl, there was no dorm, there was no girlfriend, just a - i'm out of gas, and broke, would like to go home). He probably scammed me, oh well.

The only other time i think i bothered is when one of the more sane ones on hillsborough begged me not for money, but a cup of black coffee. It was about 30 degrees outside, and I'm definately a sucker.

"he said "my car broke down up the street and me and my wife and this white lady are trying to get home to fayetville, can you spare us money so i can send my wife and the white lady home on the bus?""

He approached me at the library around 11 pm 4 years ago with the same story.

"Jesus help you, Jesus this, Jesus that..." I told him to call the cops. He said they're not allowed to give rides to people with cars that are broken down. I told him to go to the homeless shelter downtown...

"BUT I HAVE TO SEND MY WHITE WIFE BACK HOME TO SEE THE KIDS." Me.... "Do you need to call your neighbors?" Him... "Can you give us a ride back to fayetville?" Me... "How far away is Fayetville?" Him... "It's just a 15 minute drive." Me... "sorry, I really promised my parents I wont' give rides to strangers... here's a buck I've got from my birthday money and an umbrella (broken) to help you and your wife survive this aweful night. I will pray for you." Him... "God bless you and thank you, may God send you to heaven.. blah blah blah."

lol

I also had a guy at circle K ask me (it was my first month in Raleigh)... "can you give me a ride to the hospital, my mother just got us in an accident, and I need to see her." I said OK and got carjacked. ... but I did learn my lesson.

Last spring this guy came up to me at Food Lion asking for money to go to Greensboro and just had dropped off his girl. He looked like he was telling the truth. Me: I'm sorry I don't have any cash and I"m in a hurry. Him: Can you withdraw some money, there's atm right there... Me: I would, but I am honeslty in a rush to get something for a presenation I have to do. Good luck dude!

My Lessons Learned:

1. Never give rides
2. Never give cash
3. Give them food if they look devastated AND don't ask you, you can't go wrong with that
4. If ask you for food, tell them to go to the homeless shelter downtown, they will help them.
5. If asked for help or money, offer to call 911...

Dude #47.. "Can you help me man?" [he looked stoned and tried to put his arms around my waist]
Me: "Sure, I have a cell phone on me, let me call 911 for you and the cops will come help you."
Dude #47..."Nooo thank you." [dude runs off]

I will usually give them whatever I can in terms of cash unless they're being outright belligerent. No rides, though, unless I've got more than one person in the car on my team and they're all OK with it.

Bonus change/bills for excellent stories or angles.

But then again, I'm not a selfish bastard who thinks "Do unto others" only refers to situations where you're pretty sure the other guy is only down on his luck for certain reasons.

Sheeeet, mang.

I know that dude in the grey Honda--I've tossed him off the lot at work enough times that I guess he decided to start plying his trade further up the road.

My favorite bum that came around the store was Barnes. Dudeman was 6'9" and weighed like 50 pounds. Had wild staring eyes (and probably had a strong urge to fly, if he'd had somewhere to fly to), always wore the same clothes (jeans, black shoes, button-down shirt with pink-and-blue-and-green vertical stripes), and was a couple defensemen shy of a penalty-kill unit. He used to come in to the store all the time and buy a single beer and a Black&Mild, then go wandering over to the laundromat on Jones Franklin where he'd drink his beer--then he'd try to come back and smoke his Black in our bathroom, and I'd have to go beating on the door of the gents' and tell him to get out the store. He was harmless, wouldn't even hurt a fly--he was just extremely weird and in dire need of some serious medicatin'.

Then came the night he decided to hang out by our pay phones and start hollering random shit at the customers that were coming up to get gas and whatnot. He was wearing this grey hoodie that he had the drawstrings pulled tight on, so he looked like an oversized version of Kenny from South Park. One lady came up to the service window, and Barnes bursts out with "HEY! HEY! CAN YOU GIMME A COFFEE?! GIMME A COFFEE, WILLYA!" So this poor woman is all freaked out (cos Barnes is kinda a freaky dude if you're not prepared for him), and she asks for a small coffee and a pack of smokes. I get her the coffee, ring it and the gas up, and this lady goes and puts it on one of the posts in front of the store before rushing to her car, getting in, and tearing off as fast as she can.

Now Barnes comes moseying over and gets the coffee--which had about 6 packets of sugar with it. He goes back over by the pay phones and starts drinking it. I had called the coppers by this point, cos Barnes was clearly discomfiting the customers (and he won't listen when you tell him to leave--especially if you're white, because in his words "goddamn crackas always tryin' to keep the black man down!"). So I'm waiting for the heat to get there, and Barnes all of a sudden starts hollering at the top of his lungs about something. Since I was in the store with my assistant manager (whose reaction can best be summed up as "WTF?!") and the doors were locked (since it was after 11), I couldn't make out what he was saying--but as my assistant manager and I were watching, Barnes wanders out from under the canopy and starts hollering up at the sky with his hands in the air like he was some kind of mad prophet trying to call down the wrath of the gods on the infidels.

And then he decided to take his act across the road to the Harris Teeter, and we haven't seen him since. I figure the aliens finally came to get him or something.

^That's classic.

Maybe I looked like some kind of grouch, because beggars almost never ask me directly for change unless I'm with a group of people. I did get conned with the "I need money for the bus" scam one time when I was waiting at the bus stop. I know I was conned cause I saw him pulling it on someone else a couple days later when I was just walking by, and it was all I could do to resist the impulse to pound him into oblivion.

My first job was at a coffee and donut shop downtown. The manager would let the guys "working the sign" come in with their change and he'd give them big bills. About my second day on the job I figured out they were all pulling down about 2x my daily pay. Sigh. At least I was inside with the smell of fresh donuts all day.

Saw the Grey Civic guy last night again... he tried to hit me up, so I asked him what fraternity he was in... (he was wearing a greek block letter frat shirt), he got the letters wrong. I laughed at him and told him he was "all over ncsu student sites". He sped off, squealing tires. I hate douchebags like that.

I'll tell you a good one, I don't how many times this one bum asked me for money....I will never quite understand why these guys stand on Hillsborough and ask for cash from college students....I was broke as hell when I was in school. Anyhow, this guy asked almost everyday for money, usually I said "No cash man". Well one day I had just failed an exam and the guy asked me for some change I remarked " You take visa?" He got pissed at me....he was like "Man what kind question is that". Finally I let him have it....."You think you are broke...I'm broke, I paid my way into school....I owe 20 grand to school....I'm paying for a fucking cheeseburger I ate five years ago.....you aren't broke your even!" Then I walked away....that guy never asked me again for money.

I once had a bum approach me asking me for money so he could get some food. I told him I didn't have any, so I gave him a cigarette. It wasn't until later that I realized that I had been caring a to-go box with leftover food.

I remember one night at Papa John's, my husband and I went to get a pizza and were getting in our car and this sketchy looking black guy came running up to our car with one hand in his pocket. Well, obviously, we locked our doors and started the car and began driving away. He started throwing rocks and shit at us and yelling out that we were "prejudice crackas." I woulda locked my doors and driven off regardless if he was black, white, purple, or green. I don't play that shit.
