I've pretty much used every form of mp3 player out there and I've got to say that the slick form factor of the Ipod and its ease of use trumps all other mp3 players at this time. In fact, I'd like to know what alternative devices to the IpodIncognegro would recommend. To clarify, I use an mp3 player because I can hook it up to the Aux in I wired in my car as well as when I work out, go to work, study in the library etc. I use my device(Iriver) all the time.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 1:48 PM. I use my music player solely in my car.It has no use once I am out and about.
10/24/2005 1:49:14 PM
Your level use is not in question.
10/24/2005 1:54:30 PM
There's only one way to settle this.let's load the same music on all kinds of music playersand then see who can switch between artists/tracks/albums while driving in the shortest time possible.
10/24/2005 1:56:04 PM
or you can just let everyone use what they prefer
10/24/2005 1:59:08 PM
Well I've used a bunch of products and only the Ipod has been intuitive. I bought an Iriver for Napster, not because I liked the thing.

SandSanta- Personally, I just use my laptop for mp3s. My bookbag has a padded pouch for a laptop, and I have a power inverter in the car. I have a USB controller I'm using in the car presently for audio control, analog sticks set for volume and fast forward/rewind, buttons also assigned for random/repeat, forward/back, play, pause, stop. Battery life is a bit of a restriction in the bookbag, but only playing mp3s in standby mode it still gets 3 hours minimum. Although, honestly, I never left in standby mode for more than the few minutes between classes, and usually gave it some plug-in time in or between classes. As an added bonus, I can play 1080p content at full resolution on the 15.4 inch screen. Which is to say, within the parameters of my "lifestyle", the performance is vastly superior and the additional cost of repurposing the hardware boils down to the cost of the inverter and controller... both of which, incidentially, were free to me.While I understand you had no interest in my (or any) solution and rather intended to corner me in the debate, I'd also like to point out that the previous pages are filled with the solutions of those who have not chosen to take advantage of synergies in their existing inventory.

What I'm wondering is why you're allowed to use an iPod, when one of its only real features in my eyes is the semi-mature compatibility with Linux, therein allowing you to smuggle all of the "secure" data you want out on an encrypted partition, or even watermarked on your "mp3s"? I think there's something you're not telling us about your secure environment, to bolster your support of the iPod, personally.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 3:04 PM. Reason : and note that all of those "fancier" devices are also less than the eBay price of a comparable iPod]

10/24/2005 3:08:16 PM
Um... yeah, why wouldn't you be able to use any other mp3 player?Or, say some sort of streaming playback?
10/24/2005 3:09:19 PM
i never said i couldnt use any other mp3 player...i just said that all the ones that were recommended in this thread i would not be able to use.i shopped around when i bought mine (about 1.5 years a go), and i prefered iPod to the other ones.i dont know if it would be same way now, as im not familiar with a lot of the newer devices. im just merely pointing out that im very happy with it so far...which for some reason, pisses you off.
10/24/2005 3:12:20 PM
PS, you could always put the secure data, modulated, on line-out, and then demodulate it on the iPod Linux side and watermark your mp3s with it...[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 3:14 PM. Reason : oops double post]

I'll allow that 1.5 years ago the iPod looked a lot better.SandSanta- I can come as close to that ease of use as it matters, and intend to: USB sound card, USB controller connected to a USB hub (my stereo mini-jack port is getting kind of worn and requires some jiggling action to get both channels), but also: 2 cable (power, hub) convenience. Script xmms start-up on the sound card being detected, and there you go.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 3:30 PM. Reason : *]

Shit like mp3tag is where it's at. Matches unsorted mp3s with CDDB/FreeDB albums, then substitutes the CDDB/FreeDB track/name/artist/album/genre/blah parameters into a format string of your specification. Sorted a few thousand mp3s in about an hour last time I got bored enough to. Mindnumbing simplicity after that initial configuration.and hey neat, there are FreeDB bindings for Perl now... you won't have to worry about iTunes binding for any language any time soon, though... well, you will have to worry actually, the creators will probably get sued into bankruptcy. Shit sure gets simple when you rule out flexibility and innovation as factors.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 3:55 PM. Reason : *]

I'm sorry, this thread is supposed to be moving away from gay ass marketing, and I think that application's name is guilty Here's a hint I've been trying to make for a long time. Every feature you think is unique to the iPod is in fact a simple integration of existing technologies. You can achieve every feature (save for user-proofing and miniaturization) yourself, for cheaper, with off-the-shelf components. You don't even have to break out a soldering iron, most of the shit is USB. Including "one cable" convenience-- how about no-cable convenience for you only-in-the-car kids? Ever think about an XPC in the trunk? Or a true hard disk MP3 head-unit? There's a website out there where some dude built a hard disk mp3 computer in a head-unit form factor for about the price of some of those beefier iPods that are fully justified in their cost. No, really, every penny was worth it.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 4:01 PM. Reason : *]
10/24/2005 3:56:15 PM
^^ so basically, you're saying that your head unit has better controls than your ipod.ggAlso, I dunno about you, but I prefer to change tracks when I can look at both the road and the screen at the same time...meaning hold it close to the windshield.
10/24/2005 3:57:57 PM
I mean, I can see the portable crowd arguing it's the best solution, maybe, but when people start talking about using it in the car I am seriously trying to comprehend how you get your bills paid in a consumer society with that sort of gullibility.
10/24/2005 4:02:50 PM
lol...meaning i don't have to reach for the mp3 player, juggle it in my hand while 'holding it in front of me' and trying to steer at the same time. I can just (without looking) reach for the next track button on the deck with BOTH eyes still on the road. Can you do that? no cause you are too busy trying to figure out where the next button is.and plus you're indian. no respect for u at all.
10/24/2005 4:02:52 PM
Well, personally, I reach for the R1 button on the controller sitting in my lap...

Golov- You realize that pretty much everyone in this thread has a grudge with everyone else, and YOU are the only genius who has had to resort to calling people "moron" and "idiot" as their primary mode of argument? The features you seek are available in countless combinations of devices. The fact is that in your position as a consumer, you do not have the familiarity necessary to recognize the combinations of hardware that could meet your needs, much less estimate a cost of implementation. Much less, apparently, understand when it is explicitly and without uncertainty detailed that you overpaid for your desired feature-set. Until such time as you are not wholly ignorant of the technologies operating to animate your chosen "lifestyle," you might want to take the towel off of your head and bite down on it a bit.[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 4:19 PM.
