Could it be topped? Sure. WILL it? I doubt it. When a company loses 5 million bucks PER CAR to make something this good, how many people or even companies can afford to drop that again?

That's not even taking into consideration how much they spent on damn R&D to make 50 cars that sold for a gigantic loss.

So yes, that's why I doubt anything will top it in the next 40-50 years. Sure someone will go faster, but not better.

Because the Boxster brought Porsche back from near bankruptcy. And it's still one of their best selling vehicles, has very little competition, and isn't all that great.

"and isn't all that great"

Explain?

I had two complaints when I looked at one, one minor: the interior seemed a bit low rent for the price, and then one major: you can't see the engine from the top of the car - for something that I'm going to live with I need to be able to fix at least minor shit.

Bugatti planning sedan; entry model rumors disputed

Quote :
"Bugatti is planning a four-door ultra-luxury sedan with a 950 hp engine, according to the latest issue of Dutch car magazine Autovisie. Only slightly less powerful than its 1000hp sibling — the Veyron — the new model will have a coupe-like profile, similar to the Mercedes CLS-Class and Porsche Panamera, the report said. Citing “extremely reliable” sources, the magazine said the $1 million+ sedan could arrive in the next four years. The aim of the project is to create an “extraordinary mix of a car and pure art,” the source said. The source further said rumors that Bugatti might build a five-figure entry-level roadster are nonsense. See a full sketch by Michiel van den Brink of how the car could look after the jump"

Bugatti planning $1.9 million targa Veyron

Quote :
"Bugatti will launch a new $1.9 million version of its Veyron supercar in 2008, according to a published report. The so-called Veyron Targa will receive a glass roof engineered by Webasto — the same German firm responsible for the folding roof on the Volkswagen Eos, according to Edmunds. Unlike the Porsche 911 Targa — which has a glass roof that retracts and is stowed onboard — the Veyron's roof panel will have to be removed by hand and kept in the garage.

The reason for this shortcoming is the Veyron's tightly packed design, which leaves no room to store the panel. To compensate, the car will offer an expandable fabric cover that will slide in place of the glass and shield the interior from the elements.

The report seems to suggests that, unlike the Porsche 911 Targa, the Bugatti will have no structural member connecting the windscreen to the pseudo c-pillar/roll-bar. Consequently, reinforcements will be added to the windscreen to maintain rollover safety, and other changes will be made to the underbody to maintain torsional stiffness.

Bugatti will make up for the added weight by giving the car a carbon hood and doors — bringing the weight back to down to the coupe's level. While acceleration figures should remain unchanged, top speed will be electronically limited to 217 mph for safety reasons. The aerodynamics of the Targa model will not be suitable for the car's regular top speed of 250 mph, the report said."

More speculation on a Buggatti sedan...

Quote :
"According to rumours, the noble make Bugatti – owned by Volkswagen – is planning to add a second model to its Veyron two-seater sports car. With this, Bugatti would follow the current trend of adding a coupe –like four door to the model range just like Porsche does with the upcoming Panamera and Mercedes with the CLS, the latter already being on the market.

A Veyron-based Bugatti four door sedan in the style of a coupe would be the top of the line luxury car, affordable for the ultra rich only. Like with the Porsche Panamera, any real prototype of the four door has not been sighted in public yet. However, it is being suggested that the car gets power from a 8.0 litre 950 HP engine mounted up front – thus a little less than its 1000 HP Veyron mid-engined sibling .

If the new Bugatti sedan comes on the market within the next four years, it is expected to cost at least 1.0 million US Dollars."

And some luscious artist's impressions:

It made it on BBC! (first known Veyron crash)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6423241.stm

It says it costs 800,000 GBP, which is $1.5 million+

One of only 12 in Britain.

I wonder if there is a breakdown on the internet of where all the Veyrons are (by country).

hey, you gotta put down $400,000 as downpayment for them to start making one for you... so how come no one has thought of getting together a bunch of people, say 10 to 20, and ordering this car. even if i get to drive it for 1/20th time, i would still pitch in!

if 20 people pitch in, it would cost everybody just $70,000. if 30 people pitch in, it comes down to $47,000. and if 30 people pitch in, you get it for one day each month... i would say that's pretty good. for a car that only 300 people ever will get to drive, if any ordinary joe like one of use can get to drive it for 47k 12 times a year every year, there is no price for that!

what do y'all think? who is in?

some cool pics:

Dude, you need to take a chill pill

Quote :
"A twin-turbo V8 makes the quad-turbocharged W16 Veyron a fat pig."

See, the Veyron weighs 4,200 lbs., whereas the SSC is 2,750 lbs. The Veyron is not just a dragster. You can drive your kid to school in it, do some gorcery shopping, drive in NYC, etc, and it will behave as manageable as the famed 911 does. IOW, an everyday supercar. Furthermore, the interior looks like the inside of a gorgeous fashionable house, with all the amenities and comfort features you can expect. As for the SSC, I am sure it behaves like the Diablo/Countach. IOW, not an everyday supercar.

And even though the Veyron weighs 50% more and has 15% less power than the SSC, somehow it still manages to beat it to 60 mph:

Quote :
"It also features 0-60 mph time of just 2.78 seconds"

The Veyron has been clocked at 2.46 seconds. And the SSC beat the Veyron's top speed by <3 mph, even with much less weight and more power.

The Veyron is an engineering marvel, whereas I surmise the SSC is not, being just a very powerful car designed to go very fast.

Quote :
"The Ultimate Aero is sex on wheels."

To each his own, but I would be willing to wager that the Veyron would win any "sex on wheels" contest. It looks like a handcrafted jewel, inside and out. The SSC, not a jewel, but a brutish mean looking monster (FTR, I like brutish looking cars, but they are *not* sexy by any stretch).

Really good article on the Veyron:

(I don't care about all the spiel about why sales are slow... I am talking about all the superlatives used to describe how it feels to be inside one when accelerating hard from rest; relevant excerpt below.)

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/11/20/america/acabug.php

Sales are crawling at Bugatti for the world's fastest car

Quote :
"Depending on your prior exposure to big-horsepower cars, the initial second of acceleration might not seem out of the ordinary - even with all-wheel-drive, a car has only so much traction off the line, and a Porsche 911 Turbo can spin all four tires out of the gate, too.

But quickly, almost too quickly for the brain to process, the Veyron speeds straight out of your frame of reference. Once the Veyron is hooked up and putting its 1,001 horsepower to the ground, there's no comparison that will help you understand it, unless you're a fighter pilot or a circus clown with extensive cannon experience.

When you floor the throttle of the Veyron on the highway, the sensation is as if every other driver slammed on the brakes. Except they didn't. They are still cruising at highway speed, but you are blurring the space between the guardrails like an antiproton in a particle collider.

In most cars, you expect a reduction in acceleration as you move up through the gears - longer gear ratios and aerodynamic drag eventually trump horsepower. But the Veyron is different. First gear is quick and violent. Second gear takes slightly longer but seems equally violent. By third gear, you're worried about your driver's license and your life, and the thrust shows no sign of relenting.

Mission control, something is wrong. The booster rockets don't seem to be dropping off.

So you hit the brakes and discover that they're excellent, but they are of the realm of mortal cars, unlike the motor. Thanks to active aerodynamics and the wonders of downforce, at higher speeds the Veyron's stopping and cornering power begin to approach the standard set by its go-power.

But by higher speeds, I definitely mean faster than I cared to drive in suburban Connecticut. For example, if you hit the brakes and look in the rearview mirror to see the spoiler extended high and angled down in air-brake mode, you had better hope there are no police officers nearby, because that trick does not come out of the bag unless you are going at least 130 miles, or 210 kilometers, an hour - just over half of top speed."

Also interesting:

Quote :
""Ferrari would never build a car like this," he said. "They simply don't need to. They could give a car 700 horsepower and sell out a production run of 400. So why bother going to all the trouble to make it 1,000 horsepower?

"Nobody else will ever make a car like this again. This will be the high point for cars powered by an internal combustion engine.""

Update: Bugatti Veyron Targa!

Quote :
"We are 100% sure that there will be a Spider/Targa. Bugatti has ordered 400 engines and it would be a waste of money to keep them in stock covered with dust. So this is a way to make some extra money instead of flushing it down the drain.

More than 400 km/h with a convertible... who would ever thought that! According to our source that is not going to happen. The topspeed of this tarmac-eating monster will be limited at just 340 km/h. Not enough?.. Well when you've reached this speed you will definately have to visit a barber... There is only one minor problem. You can't take the Targa-panel with you when you want to drive open.

The first open version of the Veyron has left the factory for testing. If you want to test this car, you have to own a normal Veyron. So it is quite expensive to drive this car.

Next year the Veyron Spider/Targa will be on the public roads. If you want to have one, you are just too late. All the open Veyrons are sold already."

Why, opt for a monochrome tint, of course. It seems so natural – cliché to some – to order a hyper-exotic supercar in bright red, yet this is the first Veyron we've seen decked out in this typically Ferrari color scheme: all red with a black leather interior. Then appears a smaller version of Royale itself, created to attack the Audi RS 6/ BMW M5/ Mercedes-Benz E AMG/ Cadillac CTS-V/ Jaguar XF-R/ Porsche Panamera Turbo crowd. "

Over 1/5th of Bugatti Veyrons are in Dubai

Quote :
"You'd think that owning a car as expensive and exclusive as the Bugatti Veyron would ensure that seeing another one in your neighborhood would be an unlikely event. And it probably is for most of the 125 customers who've taken delivery of the hyper-exotic to date around the world. Except if you live in Dubai, where Bugatti has already sold no less than 15 of its million-dollar supercars, or 18.75% of Veyrons produced to date.

With a population of about one and a half million in the oil-rich emirate – roughly the size of Phoenix, the fifth-largest city in the US – that means there's one Veyron for every 100,000 people. (By contrast, there are 27 Veyrons in the entire UK, population: 60 million). For those fifteen multi-millionaires, however, the flashy wheels might be the edge they need when you consider that there are a very un-Beach Boys-like three boys for every girl in Dubai."

"Project Lydia"

(named after Ettore Bugatti's wife)

Supposedly the next model (a newer car has been officially confirmed, and also that it will be even more expensive) will be a bare-bones sports car, like the McLaren F1 or the Enzo.

Rumours:

1175 hp from Veyron engine
Target Nurburgring time of 6' 40''
Only 70 to be built
Cost anywhere from $2m to $3m

Here are some illustrations:
