9/30/2005 5:07:41 PM

9/30/2005 5:09:32 PM

Saw it with megaloman yesterday. The dialogue was top-notch, as always. And was it just me or did this movie make River seem hotter? The movie also managed to throw a few things at me that I didn't see coming, specifically....SMALL SPOILER DOWN BELOW!!!!!....with regards to Wash.[Edited on October 1, 2005 at 5:11 PM. 10/1/2005 5:11:09 PM

10/1/2005 5:17:08 PM
saw it last night at mission valley - 9:30 showinggod almighty it kicked ass
10/1/2005 5:46:08 PM
Wash's death was just like trinity's death in matrix 3 - comical.

I really didn't see it coming. My roommate was really pulling for River to die when she jumped in with the Reavers, the dumbass. I'm still not quite sure how the assassin didn't die from Mal punching his windpipe, I thought it had gotten crushed. Awesome movie all around, second best of the year behind Batman, IMHO.
10/2/2005 3:55:19 AM
WowStein and I must have really missed the point then.We thought it was decent.

wonder if its making any money... i watched at tinseltown in salsbury last night and there were about 15 in the audience
10/2/2005 4:18:50 PM
Megaloman says that it's only made about 10 million or something this weekend. Not a real high number, it seems. I wonder how much the movie has to make before it breaks even, though?
10/2/2005 4:33:58 PM
^$40 million. I too saw it with only about 15 people
10/2/2005 5:06:59 PM
it'll make more money when it comes out on dvd. the rumors I heard was that if it grosses 50+ mil whedon would get to do the series again.
10/2/2005 5:25:46 PM
I saw it at crossroads on Fri and it was sold out. The other showing was sold out as well. 80 million is the number it has to make before universal will make a second movie.
10/2/2005 5:39:48 PM
Wash's death was very well done. I knew that he was going to die..but definitly did not see it coming. I thought he couldn't have gone in a better way. "I am a leaf in the wind"
10/2/2005 5:49:11 PM
Easily the best movie Ive seen this year...yes, better than Sin City and Batman Begins, and I thought both of those were incredible. Toward the end I really wondered if Whedon was just going to end the story here, having the crew go down in a blaze of glory...even though there were talks of a sequel and all of that, I was really wondering how many people were going to survive this. Im definitely seeing this again next weekend and considering seeing it again today or later this week.$80 million is definitely NOT the cut off point...if it makes $50 million there will almost definitely be a sequel. There definitely wont be a renewal of the series though, its sequel or bust.

Serenity is a great movie, I'm hoping for sequels.
10/2/2005 11:50:19 PM
Only 10 the first weekend... either way, it's got some ground to gain
10/3/2005 1:09:34 AM
I went twice at crossroads and there was a very healthy turn out both times.
10/3/2005 1:16:48 AM
The real money this movie will make is not at the box office, but in DVD sales. I'd be very surprised if it got picked up as a series again. Then again, if you had told me 2 years ago it would be picked up as a movie I would have thought you were an idiot.
10/3/2005 1:21:50 AM
Word of mouth will help this movie, at least. A lot of people who didn't think it'd be any good will hear the reviews and hear from some friends. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually does a little better next weekend. I still doubt it'd be enough, though (to reach those numbers up there).[Edited on October 3, 2005 at 10:35 AM. Wow, I saw the movie Saturday. Awesome!I haven't seen the whole series but I've been prompted to purchase it since it's quite possibly the coolest sci-fi setting ever. I'm into spaceships with smoking weapons.
10/3/2005 11:50:14 AM
It only got 10 million, but the top movie only got 15 million and firefly was 2nd. Movie returns have been sucking in general.
10/3/2005 7:08:50 PM
serenity was also shown in 30% fewer theaters and made about 20% more per theatre. it would make sense that it would be carried in more theatres next weekend and therefore may get similar or higher box office numbers.
10/3/2005 7:24:12 PM
So amazingFor those of us who've been waiting for these characters for so long, I just wanted to cry the whole movie, and I did just start sobbing when Serenity first came into frame. Also, I loved Zoe manning up for the reavers.
10/3/2005 10:13:58 PM
Just saw it again with megaloman. I think it gets slightly better with a second viewing.I suppose I am a bit biased, but in terms of overall character interaction and development Serenity and Firefly really are superior to most other stories out there. I think it's the way that Joss Whedon tells his story; through the characters. All of his characters interact with one another very realistically and more or less stay true to themselves, rarely breaking out of character. Some of them hate one another, but for the few for whom there is a connection it is merely understood rather than physically expressed (Mal and Zoe, for instance). While I'm sure every character represents some sort of stereotype (Jayne is the bad-ass, Kaylee is the sisterly girl next door, Mal is the heroic protagonist, etc), they're portrayed very realistically in that they are not gross hyperboles. Mal, for instance, is not your typical good guy who rockets out through the stars to right the wrongs of the evil Alliance for the sake of goodness, he's just an ordinary guy who happens to not stand for what the Alliance represents and is trying more to look out for his own self interests than for others. But that doesn't mean that he is without a conscience and sense of honor. An extra dimension is also added by the fact that their most basic needs are not instantaneously met; there are no replicators for them to eat whenever they want and there's no Federation outposts for them to get refueling and repairs on a whim. Instead, they have to actually work to be able to survive. This is compounded by the fact that they are no friends of the Alliance, and every additional enemy they make only makes it harder for them to find work. Alone they stand no chance, so they have to work together, which only forces them to interact even more. Not only that, they've chosen the life of the smuggler and free-lance worker, which is a very hard way of life in that they're always on the move and always in danger. The work that they do pits them against death nearly every day, but the pay is barely enough for them to even get by, which is made all the more obvious by the movie. They've chosen a hard way of life, and this requires that they depend upon one another all the more.In some ways, Firefly makes me think of Cowboy Bebop; the crewmates don't necessarily like one another, but their similar situations allows them to get along long enough to form a very loose family of sorts. Everyone's got their troubled pasts and share of problems, and the threat of an empty stomach and dried-up business looms over their heads, making it all the more easier for them to just split up and quit. Yet they stick together and weather through it because, as much as they don't get along, they do get along well enough to see that they need one another to survive. At this point I probably haven't stayed very coherent (such is my flaw with writing), but I guess my point is that Whedon just has this "way" with which he portrays his characters. They stay true to themselves and act as you would expect a real person to act without becoming sappy or asking the audience to suspend their disbelief. It is something that I really do appreciate, and in many ways it makes for some much better drama.

I was remembering the big ass space battle from the movie, and it occured to me that someone could easily make a RTS, or a game very similar to freelancer out of this movie/show. You could even go as far as making an RPG, but I would like something more ship related.

Watched the movie tonight. I had never seen the show and i think the movie is one of the best ive seen in a while. Just moved the show to the top of netflix queue.
