It's not, technologically. I still think it's a tough concept to grasp business-wise though, just b/c there's so much potential downside to it.

IMO Apple's inevitably going to lose its profit margins on the computer hardware by this switch, which still makes up a good chunk of its revenues. Yeah people buy "cool", but I suspect part of the "cool" that was getting bought was having an OS that ran on closed hardware. Why pay the huge premium when you can get a Dell for half the price and the only difference is the operating system?

I'm hoping it'll bring lower prices for end users, but that also means it'll have no choice but to position MacOS X head-to-head vs both Windows and Linux. Microsoft gets the advantage of still controlling the desktop and having more $texas in the bank, and Linux gets the perk of being a free anti-Windows.

I understand the argument about performance, and it'd be nice to build my own Mac like I can a PC (assuming they release OS X as a stand-alone OS). But financially they're going to risk having to use the iPod as a crutch while they try to master walking the tightrope.

I'll trust Jobs judgment on this one, though. He's proven he knows what he's doing over the last 7ish years...

It's an OFFICIAL APPLE PRESS RELEASE.
Those are more official than what Steve says during a Keynote. It's as official as you can possibly get.

Bye.

(OMFLoophole! Excoriator said mid-2007 and the press release said end of 2007. OMG he's right! we're all wrong!)

"Right. So like I said, this is basic Ries & Trout stuff. What you're suggesting is a bit like Burger King selling hamburger meat at the grocery store.

In consumers' minds, Apple = Mac = computer hardware. NOT OS. How does Apple market their OS to consumers exactly without building a whole new brand around it?

Maybe the propellerheads will snatch it up, but that does not make for substantial market share.
"

No this isn't basic Ries & Trout stuff.

Consumers DO NOT THINK APPLE IS THE HARDWARE. The overwhelming majority of Mac owners are a) Creative Professionals (Artists, Writers, Designers) and b) the trendy regular joe. The first section, I have worked alongside now for nearly 10 years.

I can tell you that the average, the ignorant and the techie Apple user really doesn't give a damn about the hardware itself. They want a machine that LOOKS good, that makes their work look good, that is easy to use, and can do what they want it to do.

Apple users are ungodly devoted to MacOS, not the hardware.

Quote :
"Yes but clearly the iPod market is different than the OS market. There's substantial lock-in with OSes; Microsoft has to support all that "Legacy" stuff because...uh...they're successful. As to OS X itself, they aren't exactly linking against the Win32 API."

Microsoft has to support legacy products because of their Department of Defense contracts. It has absolutely nothing to do with success. They are locked into supporting age old standards until those contracts expire (which isn't for a while yet).

And OSX is linking against the BSD repository, which isn't as large as Microsoft's, but it sure as hell isn't very limited in device support.

Quote :
"So who's the market for this standalone OS besides, uh, propellerhead techies? The home market is all tied up in Windows, the corporate desktop market is DEFINITELY tied up in Windows, and the back-end market is between Win Server and Linux, as well as other *ixes. So Apple is going to ditch the only thing that moves their OS at all (hardware coolness), and just make it a standalone product to fight against entrenched competition?
"

Are you serious?

THE WORLD has been looking for a viable desktop OS alternative to Windows for YEARS. Linux still isn't multimedia or user-friendly capable. No one else has stepped to the plate. OSX costs half what windows does, offers so many of the solutions people have chastised Microsoft for for years, and uses an open sourced core.

What moves their OS is a superior product. You missed the boat bigtime on that one. It's apparent from your post that you have little to no history with the platform or OS'. Having used Mac's since the IIe on up through classic and now to OSX, I can HONESTLY say that OSX is a BETTER desktop operating system than Windows in absolutely every sense.

I am a diehard Microsoft supporter in terms of their business, but Apple makes a better OS. And competition between the two is sorely needed, it will result in better products from both companies.

Quote :
"...even though the Mac OS X for x86 still competes against, uh, Windows? Yes, theoretically the market base is 95%. But back in reality, a certain company in Redmond is happily sitting on that 95% of the market, and they aren't letting go anytime soon.

My feeling is that, in reality, the two product lines just cannibalize each other and confuse consumers. And the ISVs are stuck with the dual headaches of porting and support."

No they aren't happily sitting on anything. Governments are moving away from windows to Linux on the desktop and server arenas, which says something. Because Linux isn't a good desktop OS, and it's not a good productivity server. So the fact they are STILL switching is a big flag. In addition Microsoft is dropping volume pricing to governments and large corporations 80-95%. That's insane. And it's only helping them barely maintain market share, because it sure isn't expanding anymore.

My feeling is that competition is ALWAYS a good thing. Even more so in a free market economy. ISV's have been porting to linux for years now already, it's not a headache any major vendor hasn't already dealt with. It doesn't confuse the consumer either. Apple has been around for 20 years, people KNOW what a Mac is, they recognize it's a competing product.

By your suggestion, all cell phones should look and operate the same way, so as not to confuse the simpleton masses, god forbid someone come up with innovative and better solutions. There's no need for multiple car manufacturers either, I mean a car is a car right?

Quote :
"What!? There's more to porting the app than just the friggin instruction set. Like, uh, maybe the operating system? I'd say moving from Win32 to, say, anything *ix is the bulk of the work. Maybe they can optimize away their inline assembly and endianness porting, but still...
"

Well with games and 3d applications, they are already using SDL, Java, OpenGL and cross plaftorm capable IDE's. For productivity applications, it is a more intense task for sure.

My point is, it's ALREADY BEING DONE, so why shouldn't Apple capitalize on it? The ISV's aren't doing any more port work than they already are, yet now they get a NEW market.

I mean really.

We have seen binary translators used in the past, they are never fast but Apple insists that it will be "fast enough" for those applications that aren't Intel compatible on day 1. "

This illustrates my point perfectly.

Mathematica was already a cross-platform product

Either way, it's pretty cool that it was that easy, especially for such a complex program as Mathematica. Maybe after the transition, The Mathworks will release a native Mac OS version of Matlab. Running it on X11 kills me.

This will be intersting.
Personally, I'm happy they did it. Now using a more "common" processor, performance increases can happy more than 1 time each year. This also can mean easier/cheaper upgrades, and maybe even build-your-own macs.

However, I just hope apple does not start to enforce any of microsoft-like registration... however, they probably will have to.
