^Especially for this being their first release...I havent done the research yet but these guys HAVE to be from some crazy metal backgrounds. These guys give melodic death metal a much needed kick in the ass. Everyone go buy "A Celebration of Guilt" right fucking now. Why I havent heard of them before tonight is beyond me.When I think of the word "metal," I now think of Arsis.Spot-on review:http://www.metalstorm.ee/reviews/more_review.php?id=859They're coming to Atlanta (with Mortician, Incantation, and The Chasm) in a couple days...emergency road trip anyone?http://www.worshipdepraved.com/shows.cfm[Edited on January 10, 2005 at 12:57 AM. PS the ONLY thing that i dont like sometimes that a lot of metal bands seem to do anymore is just straight double kicker rolls the entire song. while it takes some crazy practice and endurance to do that i like a little more creativity sometimes with that bass drum. but thast a minor thing. everything else is amazing
1/10/2005 2:13:33 AM
^yeah I agree...I haven't heard everything off that CD yet but I noticed that too. He has enough bass drum dynamic in there though that it hasn't detracted from the sound, in my opinion anyway...though I guess time will tellstill... \m/

Just keep your ears peeled, then. They'll announce the lineup for this year's New England Metalfest in late Jan.

BTW, all of those shows nonlogic listed will be playing in either Winston Salem, or Fayetteville as well. So you dont have to drive to DC.

I must have an outdated info sheet. I have the Amorphis tour being in Baltimore, Springfield, and Atlanta as the closest locations. I also have the King Diamond/Nile tour as being in Springfield, Atlanta, and Baltimore, as well. The Hypocrisy/DT show I have in only Atlanta and Springfield. If you can get me an updated list, that'd be great.

Sheesh. Record labels can't even keep up on their own bands as far as tour dates go.
1/11/2005 4:54:18 PM
Why is being on the Nuclear Blast label 'selling out'?? I've never understood that bullshit...there are some great bands like Children of Bodom, Kataklysm, Death, Meshuggah, Hypocrisy, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames and Soilwork just to name a few big ones off the top of my head...can someone explain this to me?
1/11/2005 6:49:22 PM
Look at what Dimmu Borgir did for other labels and then for Nuclear Blast. Same with Death. Same with Children of Bodom. Same for Soilwork. It's not necessarily selling out, and it may not even be my opinion for all of the bands listed, but a lot of the bands had more "accessible" albums for Nuclear Blast, or didn't stick to their roots.
1/11/2005 9:07:06 PM
^point taken
1/11/2005 11:15:20 PM
I wouldnt throw CoB in there with that group. While every album has its distinct sound, i dont think they've taken a turn for the worse with Hate crew. Same for Dimmu. In Flames chose to sell out. They've stated numerous times that they are intentionally molding their music to appeal to the american market.
1/11/2005 11:25:37 PM
^yeah In Flames purposely went in the shitter, which makes it even harder to swallow
1/12/2005 12:01:34 AM
Dimmu's music has definitely changed since they signed on to N.B., but I'm not saying that's bad. "True Norwegian Black Metal" fans may despise them now, but whatever, I love their sound old and new. CoB doesn't vary too much between records, which is fine because if you've got a good sound there's nothing wrong with sticking to it. I don't know that N.B. has really affected their sound too much, at least not for the worse, though I could be oblivious...You're right about In Flames...I can't take them now...back in the day (Lunar Strain through Whoracle) they were at the top of their game. Now they're just another pop band as far as I'm concerned. Clayman was the most overrated album ever, that shit put me to sleep.
1/12/2005 12:33:36 AM
Ill go up to Colony...but Clayman was defintely the beginning of their end. And fuck "True Norwegian Black Metal" fans. They're all too busy competeing over who listens to the most brutal, and evil shit.
1/12/2005 12:55:41 AM
Darkthrone will stab your pussy Dimmu Borgir music!1!!
1/12/2005 10:34:24 AM
^^haha it does seem that way sometimes...i joined a "True Norwegian Black Metal" group on facebook and one of the guys has introduced me to some of the more obscure shit, and I'll have to say I like it for certain elements it contains...but I also know what I like and I like Dimmu Borgir, so dem hatas can take a scorching flagpole up the ass...btw, Colony was a good album from what I've heard of it, I just couldnt remember it off the top of my head because I don't have it yet. I think The Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance is my favorite, that or Lunar Strain^Darkthrone \m/
1/12/2005 12:46:31 PM
Well, I've got to get in on this topic. Although I don't listen to heavy music quite as much as I use-to. I just use the word heavy, even though the title is "metal," and for some, what I listen to isn't metal to them. But anyway here we go in no particular order. Oh!! and yeah I'm fully aware that some of these bands are borderline mainstream heavy bands. Neurosis...my favorite band.ToolMachine HeadIsis...just recently got into them, and they are fuckin great! In Flamesnothingface...who doesn't exist anymore :-(Hopesfall...except for the newest albumSystem of a DownEyehategodVOD...who also doesn't exist anymorehhmmm... well theres ten. I would like to add majority rule (credit to nrmiller) to my list. I ripped a few songs off soulseek and i love it. definitely see the similarity to isis and i actually like the vocals.I love the instrumental approach that they and isis take. really wish i could find more bandswith a similar sound. im sorta sick of bands that just wanna play as fast and technical as possible.[Edited on January 12, 2005 at 6:37 PM. I have to make an adjustment to my list as well. I put off getting Borknagar's latest cd "Epic" because I read some bad reviews. Well, those reviews were evidently from retards cuz this album fucking rocks. I liked Empiricism but it seemed to be missing something. Epic is far greater than Empiricism in my opinion. I love the chill parts and the vocals are great this time around. The lyrics are impressive as well. The only complaint I have is that the keyboards are a little to prominent at times and I would have liked to hear more of the slower melodic parts (they are beautiful on this album). The keyboards would've served better as a more atmospheric element instead of taking the lead sometimes. I love guitars and one of the main problems with the black metal genre is that the keyboards often take precedence over the guitars. I think this is the reason I like Cradle of Filth's newer stuff more than the old. This album reminds me a little of "The Sham Mirrors" by Arcturus but far more "epic" (excuse the pun). I'll let Borknagar replace Avenged Sevenfold since they aren't really true metal and haven't released but a few albums. OpethIsisToolAgallochCradle of FilthArcturusMastodonIn FlamesMudvayneBorknagar

^very well said...i hope it was me that convinced you, i like taking credit borknagar is the shit...they are a VERY close runner up to my top 10, i just cant find anyone on my list i would replace them with. Arcturus is right up there too.
1/17/2005 10:11:22 PM
do you guys think it's worth starting a similar topic to this that focuses more on Hardcore bands, rather than metal bands?I could go on all day.
1/17/2005 10:49:16 PM
I got Epic today after reading good reviews. I managed to get about 9 songs in before I switched to something else. It's fairly good, and I'll probably listen to it a few times, but it's nowhere near as good as (my personal favorite) The Archaic Course. I listen to "Oceans Rise" and "Ad Noctum" all the time. After thinking about how I tend to like the older stuff from most of the black metal bands, I revisited some things I listened to around that time, and have these listening suggestions (specific songs, if possible):Hate Eternal - By His Own DecreeGod Dethroned - Bloody BlasphemyEnslaved - Hordalendingen, Daudningekvida, Eit Auga Til MimirEmperor - Loss and Curse of ReverenceDiabolic - View with Abhorrence, Sacrament of FiendsImmortal - Solarfall, Withstand the Fall of TimeOld Man's Child - Obscure Divine ManifestationIf you can't find these or don't want to take the time to look, give me a message and I'll try to get them to you.
1/17/2005 11:57:47 PM
^^sure man go for it. I cant say that I know a lot about the genre or what you would consider hardcore. Some punk fans hate the term hardcore unless you are referring to Minor Threat or something. haha. I'm always down to hear some new bands and if nothing else I will check out some of the bands listed and post what I think about them.^its seems like I'm the only person who likes the newer black metal better than the older stuff. I guess it has to do with the fact that I like melodic music and songs that are more progressive. My favorite bands all mix slower and faster parts and clean and harsh vocals. I guess I'm the one who's really ADD since I can't seem to listen to bands that keep the same pace or vocal style throughout a song.
1/18/2005 12:22:13 AM
Emperor, Enslaved, Immortal, Dissection, etc., are all "old" black metal bands (or were at one point), and didn't always keep the same vocal or musical styles throughout songs. The breed of "new" black metal bands may be that way in general, but there are plenty of bands that were around in the early days of Norwegian black metal that don't sound like Darkthrone.
