while the 6'6" PF can still be a productive player, they will be a total defensive liability. I was just saying with having to play against the taller frontcourts in the ACC, having a 6'6" PF would be an issue.

also, fuck cptinsano. Just because i objectively post my opinion which happens to not always agree with half of the idiot, head in the clouds, super optimists on this board, doesnt mean what i say is "dumb shit"

check his videos and then tell me he'd be a "defensive liability" just because he's not two inches taller. he's listed at 235 by rivals, he's easily got a college-ready body, and he's only a senior in hs. i have to think boob doesn't get to touch much boob and he's bitter about it.

dude has a point about being a defensive liability.

as good as tracy smith was offensively, he was awful at defending.

(this guy isn't tracy. so he won't necessarily be the same type of a defender as tracy. just from his hs videos, he looks more athletic than tracy (and def howell). and remember, he's only in high school)

yeah i'm not watching the videos, but no matter how athletic a 6'6 guy is, a 6'9+ guy can still go straight over them with not too much difficulty.

much larger talent pool for football than basketball, so there will be some guys out there who are overlooked. doesn't happen nearly as often in basketball.

ya, basketball rankings are a lot more reliable than football rankings, while obviously there's gonna be misses in both, basketballs generally more consistent

Yes, only five players on the court, and the better hs players go head-to-head in the aau league and camps and tournaments. HS basketball rankings are much more reliable than football. Recruit rankings in both sports are often off, but it's much more common for a 2/3 star football prospect to fly under the radar and turn into an impact player than a bball recruit.

And I realize that 6'6" or 6'7" isn't the ideal height for a PF, but my "assesment" of Gathers is based on several of his hiGhLigHt videos AND his rankings. Not only is a beast, he's pretty athletic and can jump.

Here's a hiGHlighT video from a recent Purvis game (2013 prospect Julius Randle looks nasty):

Recruiting rankings (by the HS Junior/Senior level) are usually a pretty decent representation of kids on the AAU circuit. The top players that get missed are those that aren't heavy participants in the AAU system, usually international players. There isn't a comparable system for football, so occasionally a great talent can get missed if they aren't well connected or at a bigger HS program.

A Charles Barkley type PF could be good in our offense, and may not be that bad off defensively if he plays hard and smart, and rebounds well, especially if we have a shot blocker on the court. There are plenty of successful 6'6 PFs in college, and Barkley, Rodman, even Dajuan Blair are notable examples in the pros. There are plenty of guys that fall short though.

Coach Towe and Coach Lowe were heading up the recruitment on him. The new staff will have a lot of ground to make up, but he's been on our radar for a while. I think Towe had a pretty good relationship with his AAU coach so he was on him pretty early.

White is definitely a need for us. Don't think we get him, but its obvious we need more outside shooting on this team. TJ Warren can hit from outside thankfully...I don't think Purvis is known for his outside shooting and while Tyler has gotten better at the outside shot, hes not known for it.

White AND Jefferson would be amazing, but we are alot closer to getting neither than both.

"Nearly every stage players go through in the recruiting process, reclassified senior Andrew White has probably experienced it.

The 6-foot-4 1/2, 202-pound wing from Chester, Va., has gone through two vastly different recruitments, and The Wolfpacker has followed both of them. White played with current NC State point guard signee Tyler Lewis on Team Loaded 17s. We got to see him play in both the 2010 Southern Invite and 2010 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions.

When we interviewed him for the first time in May 2010 as a rising senior in the class of 2011, he had offers from Radford, James Madison and Virginia Military Institute. NC State was showing him some interest, but not enough to firmly put him on the radar moving forward. Basically, White was in limbo between wanting to get high major scholarship offers or having to accept a low/mid-major. He showed flashes of ability, had a good frame and was an athletic finisher, but was essentially the fourth option behind College of Charleston freshman center Adjehi Baru, North Carolina freshman power forward Jackson Simmons and Lewis.

White made the first significant move by leaving Thomas Dale High and going to Crozet (Va.) Miller School, where he reclassified into the class of 2012. White started to gain buzz during the fall of 2010 at the various camps that he was starting to put it together. He got bigger and stronger and his jump shot became a weapon. He entered last spring with a handful of nice offers, Virginia Tech and South Florida, were the lone power conference schools to extend ones, but he was hungry for more.

It became clear that when White played in the 2011 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions and then at the NBPA Camp a few weeks later, his recruitment would take off once college coaches could see him in July, and that’s exactly what happened. New NC State coach Mark Gottfried was able to watch White for the first time in person in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and then in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wis., and he landed an NC State offer. NC State and several other schools worked the angle of having White move back to the class of 2011 and play this season, but it wasn’t academically feasible to pull that off.

When the dust settled, White had upwards of 40 offers, and the avalanche of attention, phone calls and use of Facebook from all the college coaches was something probably nobody could be ready for. Even someone who went through the recruiting process on a smaller scale the year before, couldn’t be ready for what was to come.

The White family set out to unofficially and officially visit as many colleges as they could along the ride. He’s been to NC State unofficially three different times, and also has gone on unofficial visits to Cincinnati, home area Richmond and VCU, Wake Forest, Maryland, West Virginia, among others. He also officially visited Texas, Kansas, Louisville and West Virginia.

The side affect of having so many different colleges coming at you is that you also have to say “No” to so many. It’s not in White’s personality to cut off people who are being nice and showing interest in his basketball ability. Then another twist started to occur right around the November signing period a few weeks back. He got to watch some of the schools recruiting him, or his family did, and started to realize he really didn’t know that much about the rosters and systems schools had. It’s one thing to watch a team practice on a visit and to hear about it, but another to actually watch a team play. He didn’t watch Kansas much last year, or possibly at all. He obviously had never seen Gottfried coach a game before since he didn’t see Alabama in the past. That’s when it became obvious that signing in November might not be the prudent move to do.

Plus, for NC State to make up ground, the Wolfpack needed time. Louisville and West Virginia landed players or decided they didn’t want to stick it out. While other schools dropped off, NC State kept moving up his list.

Eventually, Kansas, NC State, Virginia Tech, Richmond and Georgetown, started to stick out from the group. Then Richmond and the Hoyas were trimmed, and eventually Virginia Tech.

Today, White will start his first wave of announcing his college choice between Kansas and NC State a little before 1 p.m. He’ll likely notify the college coaches, then tape a TV broadcast with a Richmond station, which might air it as early as 4 p.m., and then eventually work his way back to Miller School at 5 p.m. and make an announcement there in front of friends and family before playing a game tonight.

Schools might still make subtle runs at White until he signs in April, but he can get some peace of mind after the whirlwind of being heavily recruited since July.

The perception the last few weeks has been if White was going to pick a college any time soon, it’s probably Kansas.

NC State’s selling points are strong. The Wolfpack are a program on the rise and have a desperate need for a shooter. His family and friends will get to see him play in person and on TV with regularity. He hasn’t been able to interact much with the current NC State players, but knows Lewis and that he’ll get him the ball when they are on the court together. He also would be part of a top four recruiting class.

Another dynamic that has occurred in the last few days is Gottfried had some impressive conversations with Andrew and his family, which has helped the Wolfpack surge to the top two.

With Kansas, he got to see the Jayhawks program at their best on his official visit in September. KU had a legends alumni basketball game headlined by Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce. The tradition and hype of Kansas is always a strong pull in recruiting wars, but the Jayhawks have had a combination of players going pro early and some key recruiting misses. If junior power forward Thomas Robinson enters the NBA Draft a year early, KU might not be a top 25 team next year.

In terms of playing time, juniors Elijah Johnson (who is potentially a combo guard) and Travis Releford, and current freshman wing Ben McLemore seem to be the main guys he’d have to beat out. McLemore, a former top 50 recruit, is sitting out this season because of academics. The irony is that because of the recruiting misses, Kansas really needs White. However, the fear of getting over-recruited the next year always lurks with programs like the Jayhawks.

White will be down in Raleigh for the Holiday Invitational on Dec. 27-30.
