No one ever attempted to stop the spread. Why were planes still flying in March and April? Each state should have closed its borders. The government took the lockdown as an opportunity to pad their friends pockets. We could have closed the non grocery part of walmart and made people have a list and a day of the week to be out and put checkpoints on all major roads.

FL positive % rate today was 20! Jesus Christ.

From the data there, at least, the mean age is quite a bit lower than nationwide so while deaths will certainly spike I don’t think it will ever reach the rates we saw in the Tri-State area unless something dramatic happens.

The nationwide trends are ugggllllyyyyy right now, though, and quite worrying.

Right.

Paolo Dybala from Juventus talked about his experience at length and he essentially said it was hell going through and even as Serie A starter again he didn’t feel close to 100%... and he’s a 20-something world class athlete.

Nuance is lost on a lot but just because this thing isn’t killing people in their 20s and 30s at high rates we have no idea of the long-term effects... especially for those who have something even as prevelant as asthma.

Something I don’t see people talking about... but the excess mortality rate is almost back to normal in the country and most states. What’s the deal with that? Is it bad data? It would imply that outside coronavirus less people are dying.

Also probably cases right now are much more distributed across the country and overall healthcare system. Before you had cases crammed into very small high population areas like NYC and they immediately overwhelmed the local hospitals. I think shit is going to turn bad when the hospitals start running out of space again.

Additionally the primary group that is testing positive is "our" age range, the 25-44 range. I'm sure that some folks that are obese, have asthma, etc are having to be hospitalized, but I'm guessing more of these patients are treated and then released shortly after. Before it was a lot of the older people going in and having extended recoveries or passing away. With many people ignoring social distancing and mask guidelines I'm concerned this younger population will share it with their parents and older people in the community and that will also push up the mortality rate in the coming weeks.

In April the only people getting tested were old people on the edge of death. Coupled with the clusters in nursing home it makes sense that deaths could go down now but rate of infections way up as the death rate regresses to the mean. Since testing has expanded to include the young population as well.

^^^ Apple and Tesla shows mobility data saying people are 90% traveling as much as they had been.

I’m thinking it’s incomplete data or all the old people died early that were about to die anyway and now there’s fewer deaths as a result.

Was trying to be sarcastic, but this reply is helpful to those not smart enough to understand how math works (i.e deaths go up AFTER infections peak).

Also, rising numbers of young people getting infected isn't a good sign either. It shows that the virus is super contagious, and young people are usually asymptomatic, meaning they're likely 'super spreaders,' who will pass it on to those old people who were spared the first time.

There is literally no 'good' way to spin this.

I’m leaning this way but I’m still not sure. The positive test % rate is downright scary in a lot of places right now but we are essentially 10-15 days out from the initial move up and have yet to see an uptick in fatalities. At least a bit of one is coming but how much we still really don’t know.

I’ll say it’s pathetic and egregious that the federal government has all but given up on any kind of unified response..

anybody else watch the 60 Minutes exposé on antibody tests last Sunday?

an absurd amount was spent and wasted on shoddy tests because the FDA waved almost all of the normal regulations on testing

wasted money and an even more dangerous false sense of security for people who took them and thought they were in the clear

^3 I believe deaths aren’t merely a factor of time since contacting the virus. It is also a factor of hospital resourcing. During the winter there was flu and other factors impacting available capacity and no one was optimizing resourcing for something novel. That has all since changed, so deaths should go up but be less extreme than they were the first time around. Deaths should start to come full force again if/when hospitals are overwhelmed.

Still, we shouldn’t expect the same death rate. Earlier on there were tons of nursing homes that were hit and now those places are on extreme lockdown. The impact there certainly skewed the death rates upward, so we should see an upward trend but at lower peaks than before.

Models suggesting anywhere from 135k dead to 200k+ dead ( ) by the end of July. A massive spread in predictions, but the high side would be a god damn nightmare.

There's no evidence to date that durable immunity to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is possible. Has anyone put any thought into what the future looks like if that's the case? Maybe we all just get our Covid shot every year or every few months and just go and live our lives. Maybe people just won't live into their 80s anymore. Maybe the virus will continue to mutate into something more benign that we can all live with.

The cases graph the media keeps showing to hype up the new spread of the virus is a dishonest/extraneous graph and they won't even mention the death count anymore so people would be surprised to hear the death rate has been on the decline this whole time.

Yet the media is pooling case data without regard by shoving the total us cases graph down our throats constantly and implying the situation is currently worse than its ever been. That graph is extraneous because they are comparing case totals on days with completely different means for measuring cases. When using a graph like that, everything should be measured the same way for each day in the graph.

https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/07/07/888137097/brazilian-president-jair-bolsonaro-tests-positive-for-coronavirus

Quote :
"The Brazilian president, who has consistently downplayed the dangers of the virus, revealed his positive test result during nationally televised remarks Tuesday. "It came back positive," he told reporters from behind a mask.

He is just the second major world leader, after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, to confirm he contracted the virus.

With more than 1.6 million confirmed cases as of Tuesday, Brazil is in the throes of the world's second-largest outbreak, behind only the U.S. More than 65,000 people there have died of complications linked with COVID-19 — a towering death toll that again stands second only to that of the U.S. And because of a significant lag in testing, Brazilian researchers believe the real numbers are much, much higher than the official tallies.

Yet Bolsonaro, 65, has repeatedly doubted the severity of the virus since it first found a foothold in Brazil, reportedly in late February. A key ally of U.S. President Trump, the right-wing Brazilian leader has called the coronavirus "a little flu," accused the media of hysteria and campaigned against the shutdowns implemented by local leaders.

"I'm sorry," Bolsonaro said in April, after the country's death toll reached 5,000, "but what do you want me to do about it?"

Tens of thousands of deaths later, Bolsonaro has remained firmly supportive of reopening and skeptical of social distancing, both for others and himself.

Last week, he vetoed legislation that would have mandated the use of face masks in schools, churches and businesses. During a luncheon hosted last Saturday by the U.S. ambassador in Brazil, the Bolsonaro was photographed embracing his foreign affairs minister, flashing a smile and a thumbs-up.

The American ambassador, Todd Chapman, was seated on the other side of the president. Neither Bolsonaro nor Chapman nor any of the other men in the image was wearing a mask."
