I really love how some of you think a good coach should be able to get a group of players to win a football game no matter what their skill level is. As if being a member of a college football team somehow imbues a person with some magical power to win football games with certain coaches at the helm."What's that son? You've got Cerebral Pasly? No worries, go suit up. I'm your coach and based on that you're gonna run for 362 yards and 5 touchdowns. Against Florida State. God speed."Also, I'll go ahead and say it. We went 0-8 in the conference? Big fucking deal. It's not like we were going to a bowl game anyway. We went 0-8 in the conference and we still weren't the worst team in the ACC. Who was? The team our coach we just fired went to.

It's embarrassing.Doeren shouldn't be fired or anything but it should never be acceptable to not win a single ACC game. Shit, even Duke stops tolerating that after a while.
12/3/2013 7:00:45 PM
Lol, I care about this team immensely. I just don't think going winless in the conference is the end of the world. Putting a team in the best possible position to win games, and winning games aren't the same thing. I keep hearing people repeating these two things over and over in this thread as if they are.I think Doeren did everything he could within reason to put our team in the best possible position to win games. I just don't think we had the talent level to actually win conference games.

if doeren was worth a shit he would've put himself in at quarterback and completed all those passes that pete thomas couldn't and wouldn't have crumpled into a heap as soon as someone touched him like brandon mitchell

TOB could have gotten us 6 wins and a bowl this year maybe. SO WHAT?I rather go winless for two years straight with a completely uncertain future than a certain future of 6 win seasons (or 7 when we have an nfl qb.)we won games because glennon was an nfl qb going god mode all by himself. there were so many plays last year where balls hit wrs in the head, amazing passes were thrown with free running d-linemen, and dropped balls. our team last year would not have won many more than 3 games without glennon. that was obvious and thats what this year was destined to be. that was why he was fired.amatos teams had great players. the defense was stacked. he inherited an nfl defense, nfl qb and nfl running backs. Of course he did well. How many of those type of players were on this team? You have to remember we are competing against other coaches and teams who are also professionals and big time and are also playing to their strenths with players recruited to do a specific job and are putting them in the best position to win. We were very close to beating two top 20 teams this year. That is bright side. You don't want DD to come in and not run his style. You want him to run the style he is an expert at teaching which is what we hired him to do. This year was just one long preseason for next season all along. Nobody gives a shit about some shitty bowl appearance.[Edited on December 3, 2013 at 11:36 PM. Reason : tob coached 3 qbs. 2 of those 3 were top 4 in school history. ][Edited on December 3, 2013 at 11:37 PM. To be fair this past weekend was the first time I ever followed through on my claim that I wasn't watching this team anymore. I have said it a bunch of times to myself over the years, but always by the next weekend I would sit down and suffer through another game. This week I instead watched Duke vs Carolina and Michigan vs Ohio State and guess what... I enjoyed it!

Serious question: What do the DD defenders right now think is his ceiling? And please don't say 7-8-9 win seasons because we had that and that was not enough for a ton of the fanbase. We forced out a coach that was 9-4, 8-5, and 7-5 with a 5-1 record over UNC. Do you all seriously think Doeren can take us to a higher level than that? His recruiting so far is marginally better than Tom's. His first class is going to be ranked lower than Tom's. His in-game coaching is very questionable and the team showed absolutely no improvement this year which is my main concern. In 2015 my guess is we will be back to square one begging for Cowher to take the job.

^^He has taken NIU to the BCS. I believe thats his ceiling.P.S: one can make a strong argument that it was Kill's squad and they are doing better now without Doeren, but my point still stands[Edited on December 4, 2013 at 10:16 AM. Reason : ]

You have to see it in the context of what the ACC is now. We will have yearly games against 3 teams that should realistically be competing for the ACC crown, which is a garbage grouping that was done to favor basketball and specifically provide Duke with multiple games against UNC and ND, which should get good national ratings. Alas, we are stuck behind Clemson, FSU, and UofL in perpetuity. Now, UofL and Clemson have historically had some pretty awful years. Strong CAN'T stay at UofL forever, right? And Clemson will tank at some point. Dabo will leave or fall into mediocrity like Danny Ford and Tommy Bowden. So, say Doeren gets us back to TOB levels. 7 wins. 4 wins OOC, 3 in the ACC, likely over Wake, BC, and Syracuse. Throw in a win over UNC. That's 4-4. Then we sneak up and beat Clemson or UofL. The odds are low that it's both of them. 5-3. That's basically our ceiling and there's no way that ever wins the ACC.So basically we're boned whether the coach is/was TOB or Doeren. The only way up would be to somehow get a coach with a record at or above that of the top 3 in the division.Basically what I'm suggesting is that our only chance at winning the division ever is a South Carolina-like scenario where we catch a great coach on the way down from the NFL before anyone else does and give them lifetime unlimited access to Pinehurst.Anyone know if Chip Kelly likes golf?[Edited on December 4, 2013 at 10:24 AM. Well then I hope no one grabs Greg Schiano once he gets fired and we can get him after next year if we don't improve. That's like a 9 win ceiling, but who knows what Rutgers would have been in a better conference?I honestly don't want to take a risk on another mid-major or assistant coach. I'd rather drop down to the AAC.[Edited on December 4, 2013 at 10:35 AM. Reason : x]
