Yea it was probably Ruutu's outrageous contract, not Brian Campbell, Scott Gomez, or Rick Dipietro. Ruutu is like the Barry Zito of the NHL.

Rutherford is definitely going to have to part ways with Pitkanen's salary. Honestly, I don't think we really need. He's massively overrated anyhow.[Edited on February 23, 2012 at 11:50 AM. Reason : and Larose for that matter]
2/23/2012 11:49:57 AM
Just saw on facebook that Hibernian is offering free pairs of tix for people that call up there and can guess the weirdest place rich the bartender has worked. I can't go but if you can, PM me for the answer.

Goddamn shootoutAlso, where the hell was Juice? Staal's been a monster lately, but we know his shootout record.[Edited on February 23, 2012 at 9:48 PM. Reason : donkeydick]
2/23/2012 9:46:40 PM
we need a shootout coach or something. i think gleason set the record by hitting 3 players over with one hit though.
2/23/2012 9:48:18 PM
Yeah our shootout failure is a bit ridiculous - I'm not sure why Sutter would replace the most efficient shootout player we have in Jokinen. Oh well, one point is better than none I suppose. Can't believe the Canes are still within 8 points of the top division spot.
2/23/2012 9:58:27 PM
Staal had Hiller beat, but regardless, stop fucking sending him, god damn it.
2/23/2012 10:18:04 PM
2/23/2012 11:39:19 PM
it isn't worth it when he spends half the season on IR
2/24/2012 10:43:11 AM
If you insist, but when we trade him at the draft i think you'll reconsider what value he has.
2/24/2012 11:53:59 AM
Pitkanen is not overrated, IMO. He's a damn good offensive defenseman. I don't want him to be traded, but with our needs on offense being what they are, and his salary what it is, I won't be surprised by anything.
2/24/2012 11:56:40 AM
I think our D has been pretty solid without him, especially over the last month
2/24/2012 12:37:45 PM
Sure. I'm not saying we have to keep him. Nice to have options, though. JR is going to have to get rid of one or two of his favorite toys, I think.I also think we are due for a sneaky move by JR on Monday.
2/24/2012 12:41:55 PM
Man I wish he would deal Larose. I love his attitude but he is not worth the money he gets.
2/24/2012 12:45:43 PM
Dustin Brown is supposedly available. I'd be so happy if we could bring him in, probably wont happen though.
2/24/2012 12:58:46 PM
LA wants a 2nd line winger and a 1st round pick for Brown from what I have heard... we can't offer either of those without taking 2 steps backwards. Once Allen/Spacek or both are gone Monday, the attitude towards Pitkanen will change. If they are gone. Classic JR has been saying there have been no inquiries on either... but we know that's a lie. We just have to see if we are going to be surprised as Dammit mentioned.
2/24/2012 1:34:25 PM
In the article on the Canes website, it apparently says that Joslin isn't on the table. I really, really hope we keep Allen, though. If we re-sign him in the offseason, we'd have a pretty solid core of players up and down the ice for the next couple of years.Even though we have extra baggage when it comes to D-men, it's tough to say who should go, perhaps aside from Spacek. For the most part, all of them have been playing really well the second half of the season. Hell, even Jay Harrison has 20 points in 51 games this season.
2/24/2012 2:06:10 PM
I think you have to look at whether Harrison's value will ever be as high as it is right now. This year has been somewhat of an anomaly for him, statistically speaking... if we're looking to trade D, we should be considering Harrison. He could bring a nice haul.
2/24/2012 2:22:42 PM
Maybe, but having him signed for next season at $750k is pretty nice and for a budget team it's important to have guys like that.
2/24/2012 2:27:26 PM
^this. Were getting a great ROI with him right now.
2/24/2012 2:31:24 PM
Not to mention that even though he's 29, this is only his second season where he has stayed in the NHL the entire year. It could potentially just be him breaking out rather than being an anomaly.
2/24/2012 2:36:35 PM
2/24/2012 2:39:06 PM
I like how you chose to ignore the "If they are gone."
2/24/2012 2:41:50 PM
I didn't ignore anything. I was asking where you heard this.[Edited on February 24, 2012 at 2:46 PM. Reason : .]
2/24/2012 2:45:34 PM
Chip Alexander ? @ice_chip Asked for an update on any Allen, Spacek trade possibilities, Rutherford said, "There are no discussions." That was on Feb. 16.Today he tweeted that he speculated Allen stays and Spacek moved.
2/24/2012 2:56:27 PM
Well Chip certainly knows the team and the sport well. Interesting.
2/24/2012 3:07:12 PM
getting Spacek unburdened us from the horrible, no good, awful Kaberle deal. If he's moved, #meh.
2/24/2012 3:28:17 PM
I remember when Spacek came to the RBC Center for his first game...he walked in the player's entrance with a bag of equipment over his shoulder and then asked some random employee waiting for the elevator where the locker rooms were.
2/24/2012 3:53:04 PM
I kinda like Spacek but not at his current salary.
2/24/2012 3:58:19 PM
Yeah, but the thing is it's not like we really need to dump his salary right now to make way for acquiring someone else before the deadline...and we probably wouldn't get all that much for him in a trade as an overpriced veteran. Pretty much he's completely expendable, with no real major difference if he stayed or left.I mainly just like him because he had a partial NTC clause and actually picked Carolina as somewhere where he was willing to be traded.
2/24/2012 4:14:48 PM
agreed
2/24/2012 4:29:13 PM
Harrison has been our best defenseman for the majority of the season and is among the lowest paid players on the team. Why would someone even suggest that trading him might be a good decision?
2/24/2012 6:23:04 PM
dude Spacek and Allen trades have been the stuff of rumors, if not damn near certainties, for weeks.good call brownie.[Edited on February 25, 2012 at 2:47 AM. Reason : only one will be traded. i think it'll be allen over spacek, though. the rumors are the opposite.]
2/25/2012 2:46:08 AM

2/25/2012 10:23:43 PM
According to Chip on twitter, JR couldn't get an extension done with Allen. We could get a first for Allen the way trades have been going so far, so make it happen.
2/26/2012 2:59:58 PM
I said at the time I was pleased about resigning Ruutu, and I still think he would be hard to replace, but with how dead today has been, we could have flipped him for a hefty sum. Also, if we're going to keep Allen, and apparently looking for a top line winger for Staal, I think JR has had assurances from PK that he'll get a nice cash infusion in the budget next season. ]
2/27/2012 3:07:54 PM
What a waste, no moves at all. We have too many defenseman, too many goalies, and too many shitty forwards. I don't care if we could get a 7th rounder for Spacek, just do anything with him, since he'll probably be scratched when Joni comes back. Also, Gaustad went for a 1st rounder, so Ruutu could've probably gone for like three 1st rounders. [Edited on February 27, 2012 at 3:25 PM. Reason : s]
2/27/2012 3:20:35 PM
not to say that it would have been a bad move --but we would wait for those first rounders to turn into something useful, and when they start to add any value to the organization, Staal and Ward will be that much closer to the end of their deals. Who knows what you get with those, because no one would give us a top-10 pick for Ruutu (I don't think...)also 3 1st round picks is obviously hyperbole, but maybe some team like vancouver gives up 2 firsts, or a 1st and second + even maybe a prospect, if they were feeling particularly randy. We'll see how Ruutu does, I guess. ]
2/27/2012 4:04:03 PM
Yea, I'm for keeping Ruutu, but seeing some of the trades, we might've been able to get someone like Hodgson ( a trade that I don't really understand) and maybe more for Ruutu. Whatever though, enough about what could've happened, it's speculation. With Dwyer out a couple weeks, I hope they bring up Dalpe or Dadonov. I was at the Checkers game Saturday, and Dadonov looked awesome. Boychuk and Sanguinetti on the other hand, looked pretty bad. Boychuk backchecks like no one I've seen before, in a bad way.And as I post, I see that Boychuk is in fact being called up. Best of luck! Last chance. [Edited on February 27, 2012 at 4:52 PM. Reason : s\]
2/27/2012 4:41:22 PM
I am surprised they haven't brought Dadonov up yet.... And from what I remember, Boychuk played a solid game Friday night.
2/27/2012 4:56:00 PM
I, too, am curious to see Dadonov. The limited times I saw him against us, he looked like a very good prospect.
