Hillsborough Street is going to look a lot different in a few years with all the projects that are on the horizon. These changes should be interesting in shaping the Universities image and attracting future students to the area. Its fairly exciting to see especially with the current economic conditions.

I, for one, loved having the Eckerd Drug right across the street from the library bus stop during my first year or two
8/30/2011 7:30:24 AM
I thought that drug store was still there?
8/30/2011 8:43:14 AM
Eckerd? On Hillsborough? That's been gone since like 2002. Schoolkids was in that building before they moved down where they are now, and that was after Eckerd closed and the space was subdivided.
8/30/2011 8:56:33 AM
I could have sworn I drove by the other day and saw a drug store over there. But google confirms I am crazy
8/30/2011 9:10:48 AM
Eckerd doesn't exist anywhere anymore. They got bought out.
8/30/2011 9:24:51 AM
The two closest drug stores to campus are Kerr Drugs in Mission Valley and CVS in Cameron Village. So, especially as more folks start to live on Hillsborough when the Valentine/Stanhope project becomes occupied, I think a drug store there will make sense.
8/30/2011 9:42:25 AM
There's no CVS at cameron village
8/31/2011 10:57:36 AM
^ Correct, it's a Rite Aid over there.
8/31/2011 11:28:38 AM
Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, they all blur together for me.
8/31/2011 11:45:44 AM
Me too, hence my error. Though newer Walgreens do tend to have a very uniform look-and-feel.[Edited on August 31, 2011 at 1:03 PM. Reason : Didn't that one used to be an Eckerd too before they got bought out?]
8/31/2011 1:02:56 PM
I think it was.

was at Frazier's last night for dinner. It was great, but I don't understand how that place can survive with it being basically surrounded by the university.

The next phase of Stanhope Center / Valentine Commons has been submitted. It includes 2 buildings along Hillsborough street, one at the corner of Hboro / Concord, the other at Hboro / Friendly. There is also an 1100 space parking deck behind it screened on three sides by a 7-story, 126 unit apartment complex (248 bedrooms total.)The design of the deck and the 7-story apartments surrounding it is included in the PDF linked below, but the design of the buildings along Hillsborough Street is not really clear (yet.) What is clear about the buildings facing Hillsborough street is that the buildings themselves will be built up to the sidewalks on Hillsborough, but there will be a parking lot between them, facing Hillsborough Street, occupying about 1/4 of the length of the block. There will also be a drive-through in back. Evidently both the drive through and parking lot were insisted upon by Kerr Drug (though I notice they didn't insist upon drive-throughs or parking lots at their store at East 54 in Chapel Hill.)It's not as bad as it could be, however, since (1) there won't be any driveways from the parking lot to Hillsborough Street; it will be accessed by an alleyway from behind, and (2) the deck has a surplus of parking spaces above and beyond what is required by zoning, so if they ever wanted to build a third building where the parking lot is currently depicted, they could do so with relative ease.http://www.raleighnc.gov/content/PlanCurrent/Documents/DevelopmentPlansReview/PlansInReview/2011/PlansSubmittalMapsByType/SitePlan/SP-043-11.pdf

lol I noticed that too.
10/6/2011 8:25:39 PM
This is what the building at the corner of Hillsborough & Friendly will look like.
10/7/2011 10:44:01 AM
yo i heard you built a new campus cause you ran out of room on your old campus so we took a blueprint from your new campus and built it next to your old campus[Edited on October 8, 2011 at 8:36 PM. Reason : -]
10/8/2011 8:34:24 PM
lol pretty much
10/8/2011 8:35:35 PM
^^^ That rendering looks a lot like the newer YMCA on Hillsborough. It also looks somewhat similar to the building right beside it on Friendly. Theres nothing wrong with uniformity in architecture along Hillsborough St. IMO.[Edited on October 9, 2011 at 1:29 PM. Reason : ]
10/9/2011 1:06:58 PM
In some regards it does look centennial-ish. I'm kind of intrigued by the large glass area on the left side of the building though. It's too far away from the YMCA to get any uniformity benefit, IMO, but I suppose it does have a few things in common with the yellow bulldozer building, if the scale matches up.

10/10/2011 10:00:41 PM
^didn't realize how amazing that place was until a few weeks ago. Its a little expensive, but god is it good.
10/10/2011 10:18:37 PM
It's expensive, quality is hit or miss, and they've suffered a lot from bad decisions on when to open and how to stay open.I wish the best for them though.
10/11/2011 3:14:47 AM
Honestly, I think it really all boils down to foot traffic. They get tons of it on Franklin St and get very little in comparison on Hboro St. It's not the food or advertising or anything like that imo.
10/11/2011 8:34:06 AM
If they can tough it out until the construction behind/around them is finished and move back into the new building, they'll be golden. The question is where they'll move to in the meantime, as the building they're in will be demolished at some point.I think it would be really cool if they could move into and rehab the old Nehi bottling plant (the cream-colored brick building with the black entranceway to the left of the Wilmont). That building has been empty ever since I came to Raleigh (1998) and probably a lot longer than that. Someone needs to save it before all of the black bakelite tiles fall off the entranceway.[Edited on October 11, 2011 at 9:25 AM. Reason : Though they would get even less foot traffic there than they do now, which is a problem.]

10/11/2011 9:36:59 AM
Are you sure Valentine was involved in the Carolina Equipment Company rehab? I didn't think he had anything to do with it.
10/13/2011 2:28:29 PM
^Think you're right about that. I know Jim Goodnight was involved with Lulu (I think his wife runs the company) and, looking at tax records, It was sold from NC Equipment Company to Rose Mary Development holdings, the current owner, in 2007. All of the properties Valentine is planning to build on, save for one, are owned by Courtland Apartments LLC.
