Except that would be an absurdly transparent claim. Every day she, herself, presents another impeachable offense but then say it's on the senate.

Edit: I mean she'll "get away with it" bc her seat is 100% safe and enough allies will have to make the same about face that she probably won't endanger her speakership near term, but this is making her look super weak and short sighted

I mean I was basically just paraphrasing shit she has already said, so I don't really know what else to tell you.

Do you honestly think she's holding out for anything other than political theater/chess moves?

And as infuriating as it is, punting and saying "well the Senate won't do it" is still accurate up to this point.

She can sit back and wait for congressional testimony to unfold as long as she can and it won't really hurt her. It's not like she's going to get voted out of office for using stall tactics, as shitty as they are.

Sure, from a personal political perspective maybe it isn't "stupid", but from that perspective not much is.

From a "responsibility to govern and provide checks to executive power" perspective, it's very stupid. Every day she delays makes impeachment seem sillier, despite evidence piling up. Eventually, hopefully, people will come to their senses and impeach, and Dems will be hit with the wishy-washy-ness. I think those will just amount to minor dings and blemishes, but it dirtiest up would should be an obvious political win, from an anti Trump, anti corruption perspective.

This whole argument is so absurd.

Trump and his entire administration is the most openly corrupt, non-transparent and conflicted we have had in generations (including Nixon), probably ever.

Mueller/Russia aside it should be a 100% given the House initiates proceedings. There are literally impeachable offenses committed daily. Because a Senate comprised of sycophants like Graham and Kennedy will not convict is a piss poor excuse to demur on this.

To be clear, I'm not in any way condoning/approving what she's doing. I think it's cowardly and pathetic and harms our democracy in immeasurable ways. I just don't see why anyone is surprised that she's taking this tactic. It's beyond obvious to me.

Admittedly, I also have a pretty bad case of "outrage fatigue" at this point, because the bottom line is that Trump's approval still rating won't budge and nobody seems to give a shit except for people who've been directly oppressed by this horrific administration.

I fully anticipate things getting even worse than they already are, and I won't be surprised at all when Trump is reelected.

I compared Trump's rise to power to Hitler's a while back and people thought I was being hyperbolic or dramatic, but the longer he is in office, the more dangerous he becomes.

But yeah, it's shitty that the most powerful woman in the supposedly free world is being political and short-sighted about the whole thing.

Saying that you will only impeach with strong bipartisan support, conceding your majority power to Republicans to decide if impeachment should proceed, is unequivocally stupid

Sure, agreed. Just telling you why she's doing what she's doing and why she'll get away with it.

Would you like me to stop by her house in SF when she's back in town and tell her what y'all are thinking?

JFC, we are so fucked.

This tweet thread goes on a ride. Trump is a criminal who is covering up crimes but I hope he meets in good faith tomorrow and we hand him a huge bipartisan win!!!

God damn, Democrats such at politics.

^^^Her refusal to do anything until absolutely necessary doesn't cost her much of anything, which is why she's punting and will continue to do so. Again, using her own words/logic, impeachment is a bad idea when you have an obstructionist/immoral senate, so why get everyone riled up and lead the charge now when it's bound to fail? I mean do the Dems think they'll score a moral victory by "rushing" the impeachment route when they have zero chance of removing him from office? Will it hurt his approval enough to have him lose the election? IDK, but I can see why she'd not want to take her chances. It's like trying to shoot the moon in Hearts. Or something. I think she's gambling on a lot of bombshell revelations being uncovered from congressional testimony, and it could all come back and blow up in her face for not doing anything about sooner. But probably not.

I think people are being more idealistic than pragmatic about this, and that's probably going to lead to even more disappointment.

Also, I'm pretty bad with sports/gambling metaphors when trying to offer a plausible explanation for a politician's game of chicken, so my apologies.

SHOULD she back it? Sure. In a perfect world where moral victories and optics matter like they should.

My post was about her statement of only wanting to move forward with bipartisan support being really stupid which you seemed to disagree with, no one is questioning her credentials as a career politician

And there is no rushing, we have clear evidence of crimes and should move forward with an inquiry. An inquiry will allow the house more power to gather information and investigate. This is their constitutional duty. Nixon was much more popular than Trump, it's silly to think this will hurt dems

i think her short term political calculations are wrong, but we should also be considering long term political calculations. pelosi was one of the leading voices against impeachment or any kind of accountability for bush after the iraq war and now we have fucking john bolton as national security adviser trying to start a war with iran.

i doubt we will never see a better time for, or a more clear example of the need for, the house to exercise their inherent contempt powers and to begin impeachment inquiry (or inquiries)

maxine waters' comment is correct though, unless the house wants to use their inherent contempt powers and start arresting people there isn't really much of a penalty for contempt (although that alone is not a reason to be against holding them in contempt)

Left-wing Dem Caban claims victory in close Queens DA race
https://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/queens-district-attorney-democratic-primary-katz-caban-1.32979455
Quote :
"Late on election day, political newcomer Tiffany Caban, a public defender who says the criminal justice system is rigged against the poor, held a lead of around 1,100 votes over Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a seasoned politician who was the favorite of the state's Democratic Party establishment.

At Caban's election night headquarters, raucous supporters celebrated as she claimed victory.

"When we started this thing, they said I was too young. They said I didn't look like a district attorney. They said we could not build a movement from the grass roots. They said we could not win. But we did it y'all," she said.

But the race might not be decided soon. Thousands of absentee ballots received by mail won't be opened and counted for at least several days.

Katz told supporters just before 11 p.m. that "there's a lot more days" before the results will be known."

Quote :
"But Caban, 31, who identifies as a queer Latina, has promised to take things further, saying more radical reform was needed to change a cycle of mass incarceration. She has promised to stop prosecuting recreational drug use, prostitution and small-time crimes like subway fare evasion, and seek less punitive sentences for many felonies."

" hope pelosi had some bigger strategy on impeachment"

the strategy is that impeachment is divisive and will rally trump's base, and if he does still lose the election he'll just claim it was because of conspiracy witch hunt. so rather than play into Trump's hands with impeachment, focus on winning the election based on convincing voters that Dems will lead/govern on issues that most Americans care about in their daily lives. If they can win convincingly at the polls, Trump will have less room to tantrum his way into avoiding leaving office.

will this strategy work? hard to say. the progressive and centrist wings of the Dems are squabbling so much they are going to have a hard time convincing the electorate that they in fact will govern better for them on the issues they care about.

is it a morally principled strategy? Absolutely not. All the Dem leadership know that Trump has committed crimes. But because everything Trump does is scandalous, there's no real smoking gun to rally Americans around impeachment. So they won't risk trying it. Cowardly? sure perhaps. Do they know/plan/hope that SDNY or other agencies will go after his once he's out of office? I hope so. But who knows.

any time democrats are considering something that might not have 100% support we have to hear the, "this could give the election to trump argument" but anytime trump does something without 100% support it's always, "trump is really energizing his base with this" and democrats don't have the awareness to understand the irony

"play into Trump's hands" cmon man. You can't really think he WANTS to be impeached.

If you're afraid of Trump refusing to leave, thats even more of a reason to impeach.

Trump's base is Trump's base, they will show up unless he backs off their core issues or, maybe, if a brutal impeachment process makes him look weak.

And what about the democrats base? Impeachment would absolutely inflame the democratic base. Look at Warren's fundraising before and after coming out for impeachment.
