Baylor? Iowa State?

ACC already has the Ames, IA market with Harrison Barnes here.

The ACC's logic is: "we're a shit sports conference, we'll accept the going logic on what everyone else around the country says about us finally, so what we're going to do is effectively merge with schools from the weakest college sports region in the country to try and improve."

The ACC's dead. It may keep the name but it's effectively dead.

You are so dumb

full disclosure: my grandmother taught at uconn so they were my fallback team growing up (after ncsu).

yeah, let's turn down these schools so we can get...WHO? Baylor? SMU? Ooh! Maybe Mizzou will come! Then we can play the ACC Tournament in St. Louis

^ Hasn't it become f*cking clear at this point based on how all these administrators are talking and moving things around that basketball is a complete bystander and doesn't play into these discussions at all? College sports revolves around football, basketball doesn't mean butkus to these people.

FWIW I wouldn't hate adding Louisville. While I hate everything about UofL and their sports program, I live there. So, it'd be nice to be able to see some ACC games from the Bucket or Papa Johns stadiyum

I'm sorry, but are these schools not going to join us for basketball as well? We stay the same in football but we become the strongest bball league, hands down, regardless of the motives.

Name one football school better than Pitt or UConn that we could add that isn't C-USA and meets our academic standards.

What I don't understand is we, as State fans, are getting a pretty good deal. The ACCs status as high-major is permanently secured and we don't have to deal with the elite CFB powerhouses ramrodding us every Sat. Let's face it, we will never have the infrastructure in place to compete with Texas or OU in the longterm.

How did we lose becoming strongest basketball league to the Big East again? Oh, that's right, expansion for the purposes of football.

And look, John Swofford did not give a sh*t about basketball when he made this move. Basketball has as much relevance to Pitt and Syracuse coming in as does lacrosse (Syracuse is good in that sport).

I bet we're going to play Duke and Carolina even less now for scheduling purposes and they make it so our only guaranteed home-and-away every year is Wake.

It's the coaching search over again.

People want to delude themselves into going after the best thing possible instead of settling for a solid but not sexy pick.

In what universe did adding those 3 teams put us behind the Big East? I seem to remember them adding Marquette and Louisville at the same time. Could that be how they passed us? No, of course not, because that doesn't allow you to make your tortured argument that we need to go after Texas or USC or the St. Louis Rams or some shit.

Quote :

Pitt and Cuse have a better football history in the past 2 decades than we do, and are far ahead of most ACC schools all-time, including the past 3 decades. How many ACC schools have played in multiple BCS-level games in the past 3 decades? We have 3. We're adding 2 more.

If you want to stick to Southern football and forsake a real gain, I'm sure UT could use some fans right now.

I doubt they'd do divisions like the current ones. The only thing that makes sense is the pod system or North-South.

Are you a Pac 12 fan or something? Because that's where they're going. And Kansas is essentially the same pickup at UConn or Syracuse!

It's not. Going from 9 to 12 was supposed to be a financial windfall for the league and it's general wisdom to almost everyone at this point that it has not worked and blown up in the league's face because they were dependent on the 2nd BCS bowl bid every 4 years to make it work and it's not happened once. So now they're doubling down by getting teams from a region of the country where college football is a marginal sport. It's a great move for basketball but basketball is an irrelevance in college sports in 2011 according to how the administrators are acting, otherwise Kansas would be a blue-chip college everyone is wanting in their league and they're very much not. The money is all about football and what about this league as it goes from now a 12-way split of revenues to a 16-way split of revenues with 4 not huge northeastern schools coming in means that revenues are actually going to increase for each individual college? I think it's far more likely down the road you see the WAC to Mountain West-style split. The WAC once grew to 16 teams and then the strongest 8 of them left one day to form their own conference, the Mountain West. The schools in this new 16-team league if they can't carry their own water in relation to everyone else, down the road will be left on the roadside to wither because the financial windfall won't come and so you're going to get schools like Carolina say "we need to make more money, us along with a few others would do allright, but we're carrying too much dead weight with the likes of Wake Forest", then they're going to split, and that's going to be a sad day for college sports in the state of North Carolina.

Think about their media market vs. any northeastern team, and check those TV numbers from a few pages back for Rutgers, Syracuse, and UConn.

Well, they certainly won't make North/South divisions. That would be ridiculously unbalanced. We'll be in the division with at least one of them for sure.

Not really that unbalanced.

BC, UConn, Pitt, Cuse, Umd, VT, Rutgers, UVA

Sure FSU is good but what other schools destroy Pitt or BC in recent years? Miami? Clemson?

Fuck...I can barely get a weekend off to make it back to Raleigh...much less those shit-holes. But my girlfriend's family is from Connecticut and have season tickets to UConn games. So if they do end up joining, we'll probably configure some trips back home for those games and it won't be too bad.

i'd say that it's balanced north-south.

you have VT and FSU at the top of each one in football.

then you have a bunch of mid-small bowl contenders. (miami, gt, clemson, nc state, unc, wake vs. pitt, syracuse, umd, uconn, bc)

then you have duke and rutgers or uva probably at the bottom, and rutgers is much better than duke and has the possibility to move up quickly with the recent investments made up there.

Have you actually been to any of those places? They're all infinitely better than Winston-Salem or Durham or College Park.

I'd say in a perfect world - we bring in UConn and Notre Dame next.

No I don't think it'll happen (with ND anyways) but if we're going to 16 - those are the two I'd choose.

On this page, i discover that Flyin Ryan is a moron. seriously, my head hurts after reading all the stupid here. syracuse and pitt were the two best options for expansion, bar none. (don't be stupid, no one is leaving the big 10). i don't think you'll see another team added until ND decides what they are going to do. they are the only big time football program the ACC has a chance to get. (they better not bow down and take fucking texas and their bullshit network, it wouldn't help the conference a damn bit)

my vote goes for UConn and Louisville. Has Notre Dame showed any interest in coming to the ACC? Seems like the longest of long shots for them to come here, staying independent or going to the Big10 have been their most logical landing places

I know that's what everyone assumes will happen, but Wetzel makes an interesting (albeit improbable) case for why the ACC might be a better fit.

Also, fuck Rutgers. Out of the reasonable candidates, UConn and Louisville are no-brainers.
