^True ... but it still won't stream through the Extender http://thedigitalmediazone.com/2009/10/20/netflix-streaming-now-available-in-windows-7/Nice addition, nonetheless.[Edited on October 20, 2009 at 2:25 PM. Reason : .]

Yay for W7MC Netflix streaming! The new interface looks nice; I like the consistency with the recorded TV UI. Overall, a nice update - very cool.

between home premium and pro, is there any reason NOT to go with pro? pro is an in-place upgrade for me but home premium would be a custom install (currently have vista business)
10/20/2009 9:41:19 PM
not really. i do suggest you do a clean install anyway.
10/21/2009 1:14:06 AM
windows 7 worked just fine when i installed it as an upgrade before
10/21/2009 7:17:38 AM
let's say, hypothetically, i'm running an inauthentic version of xp on my desktop and i bought windows 7 through win741.com (the student discounted version of 7). i assume it's an upgrade, so will it upgrade my version of windows that doesn't pass genuine valiation?
10/21/2009 5:37:46 PM
^clean install for xp.
10/21/2009 5:39:31 PM
^^theoretically, no, no way it will let you install it w/out a legit cd key for winxp, it's like trying to upgrade over a 30-day eval of xp which i can't see them allowing someone to purchase and get upgrade pricing for that. and yes if it was legit, you can buy the upgrade version but it would still require a clean install, no in-place upgrade from winxp

this thread is a little much to read through...I'm thinking about upgrading to W7. The student deal is $30 for home, but in past experiences, Home versions were garbage... what are the real differences between home, pro, and ultimate? I don't have the money to buy pro or ultimate (any deals anywhere?) and I've currently got Vista Ultimate (I have no complaints with Vista, works well for me)and I'm guessing I'll need to stick with 32bit for program compatibility? (acad, dos programs, etc) is this accurate?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions [Edited on October 22, 2009 at 9:24 AM. Reason : .]

You can get Pro from the student site as well.
10/22/2009 9:30:16 AM
If you call the Microsoft Store number (see slickdeals if it's not in this thread), you get a DVD which should work for 32/64 bits and you get Pro for $30...you aren't stuck with Home/Starter.[Edited on October 22, 2009 at 9:32 AM. Reason : aaaand it's the Full version, not just an upgrade.]

For the average computer user Home Premium will be all the person will need. I had Vista Ultimate on my laptop and it was a total waste, never used the Ultimate features, I simply could have used the Home Premium and been fine. I didn't care though cause I hadn't paid for the Ultimate, was an upgrade through Dell as a bargaining chip at the time. For AutoCAD, there are 64bit versions out there but you will be fine to use 32bit apps on the 64bit OS; I'm doing that now on my desktop PC at home and have no issues with compatibility or stability. And yes, the wikipedia link lays out all of the versions very well. Unless you need multilanguage support, or the bitlocker drive encryption Ultimate will be overkill. The nice thing about Professional is the XP Mode that will be featured as part of it. But if you don't need that or remote desktop possibilities then I'd say to just go with Home Premium. If Pro is able to be bought for $30 like Home Premium using student discount, then that would be the best choice of all.[Edited on October 22, 2009 at 9:37 AM. ^^^haven't seen that... ah, on the order screen^^thanks. my question regarding 32/64 is for program compatibility... well it might not matter anyways... I've got 4 GB of ram & my video card is 1/2GB so a 32 bit system is already using all of it and I'm not upgrading my ram anytime soon.^I'm thinking pro as well. I do use RDP and may possibly need XP mode for some propriety programs that are stable/tested on XP and no other OSs so what's wrong with using the pro upgrade versus the full version? the student website only has the upgrade [Edited on October 22, 2009 at 9:51 AM. The 64-bit would be better. it should run all your 32-bit programs fine, I haven't seen an instance where that isn't the case yet. also, 4gb of ram + 1/2GB > 4GB, so a 64-bit system would already be better, your OS can probably only address ~3.5GB because of the .5GB video card, but it depends on the system.imo it would be dumb to upgrade to a 32-bit version if your current computer is already 64-bit.
10/22/2009 10:41:07 AM
^yeh, that's what I meant. 4 gigs of ram + .5 video, so 3.5 is addressed + .5 for video, so all availability is used. i'm on 32 bit now. [Edited on October 22, 2009 at 10:44 AM. Reason : .]

the upgrade worked just fine for me, they tell you exactly what you need to do to prevent conflicts before you start.
10/22/2009 5:12:01 PM
For anyone who might be pondering the versions still, it really comes down to this:Do you want to remote desktop into your windows 7 computer?or Do you want to add your windows 7 computer to a domain?orDo you want to have access to windows xp mode (free xp VM)?If you answered yes, get professional. All others get home premium.[Edited on October 22, 2009 at 5:37 PM. Reason : a]

Community college .edu addresses will work, right?

IIRC...16GB free space to install 32-bit20GB free space to install 64-bitlike Noen said, install size varies depending on hardware but in the 5-7GB range typically from what I've seen.
10/22/2009 6:49:45 PM
i have more free space on my hd now than i did with vista but haven't investigated why yet
10/22/2009 8:03:49 PM
Just finished upgrading. Pretty fluid feel so far
10/22/2009 8:17:12 PM
i see they haven't fixed the center button scrolling, still feels weird
10/22/2009 8:20:14 PM
whats wrong with the center button scrolling?
10/22/2009 8:29:39 PM
Looks like Pro was an option w/ the student address, sooo I'm downloading Pro64 for $30 now!
10/22/2009 8:41:06 PM
has no one else noticed that the scrolling is different in win 7? it's response isn't quite linear and its not as responsive. with the beta i figured it was some kind of drive issue with my computer, but now i've noticed it on other computers too.
10/22/2009 8:53:52 PM
i use it constantly and have never noticed it.
10/22/2009 9:30:32 PM
too bad you can't get ultimate for cheap.

going to download for my netbook but my external dvd drive died.so how big is the install file for say 32 bit home? Would I able to load it on a flash drive, and how big a flash drive we talking? Seriously never used the external dvd drive in about 5 months SO i might just invest in a large flash drive instead. and LiteON is being a bitch about the warranty on the drive, but I am like an old person/Indian person with nothing better to do but complain..........
10/23/2009 8:28:26 AM
good thing JCC is part of the MSDNAA
10/23/2009 8:53:30 AM
i've done 2 installs off a flash drive and it is simple. 4gb flash drive will do.Go to google and search "windows 7 usb install" and you'll find all kinds of instructions for how to do it. Goes super quick compared to a disk also.
10/23/2009 8:58:17 AM
what happened to the little quick launch shortcut at the bottom left that let you return to the home screen instantly?
10/23/2009 9:04:17 AM
the "home screen" meaning "show desktop"?It is the rectangle on the far right near the clock when your taskbar is horizontal or at the bottom when your taskbar is vertical.Hover to "see" desktop, click to minimize all windows and "show"
10/23/2009 9:09:19 AM
yeah desktop is what i meant, thanks
10/23/2009 9:30:37 AM
I installed it on my netbook, ran windows update, it installed a chipset update, and now my computer screen is black
10/23/2009 9:40:20 AM
I've never had very good luck with windows update video drivers.
10/23/2009 11:19:07 AM
Yeah it's a bizarre bug, because it actually loads windows (I can hear the desktop load sound). If I hit the keys to put the system to sleep mode and then wake it back up, it's sitting at the login screen like nothing happened.I'm going to install the XP drivers from ASUS and see what happens.
