Damn, I think the Okkervil River record is already my 3rd favorite of the year behind the Fleet Foxes EP and LP.Also, I swear I've listened to the Black Kids' "underestimated my charm" at least 10 times today.[Edited on July 17, 2008 at 12:35 PM. Reason : .]

I love the new okkervil river but I just cant stand the Avett brothers. Lots of people seem to like them but I dont get it at all.opinions opinions opinions
7/19/2008 1:09:00 AM
Their live show is fun, at least from an energy standpoint.I have no desire to listen to any of their records.
7/19/2008 10:48:40 AM
It took me a few listens but I am totally into that Ovechkin River...especially the one about smokin' a bowl and hangin' out with Zydeco.
7/19/2008 11:05:31 AM
^^ehh makes senseNever seen them live so I'll give them a chance
7/19/2008 1:24:32 PM
I honestly have no opinion on the Avett Brothers. I have seen them live, and it was okay, and I think they have some good songs, but nothing that really grabs me and makes me want to listen to more of their albums. On a completely different subject, "Starry Stairs" off the Okkervil River album is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

7/20/2008 10:14:44 AM
^^ so, the new album is just the CD of unreleased material... they aren't actually technically releasing a NEW album, right?

This Okkervil River album is pretty stellar. I could take longer instrumental tracks. The third one and Bruce Wayne Campbell are excellent tracks.
7/21/2008 1:07:19 AM
^^ sweet-- thanks!
7/21/2008 1:25:01 AM
as far as the Avett brothers go, while I was still in college and my friends from back home were still in Raleigh it was the only decent music I could get them to listen to, so they sort of became a backdrop to boozing. Probly wouldn't have gotten as into them if this weren't the case.
7/21/2008 10:26:04 AM
That Connor Oberst record is mediocre at best. I mean, there are about 3 "great" songs, but the rest were boring.I'll give it another listen. The Okkervil River is spectacular, though.
7/21/2008 11:44:01 AM
if someone could let me know the millisecond that the new Department of Eagles comes out that would be like super super super awesome
7/21/2008 8:19:07 PM
yeah, that conor oberst is pretty forgettablejust listened to the okkervil river, didn't like it at all, but i've never liked them so nothing has changed

pitchfork eviscerated the black kids album. now i see why people hate them so much.
7/22/2008 10:56:16 AM
i can't see that review but the album did get old for me pretty fast.
7/22/2008 11:01:40 AM
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/51246-black-kids-partie-traumaticthat's it, that's the whole review.considering p4k were the first ones to hype up the black kids, you'd think they at least deserve an actual review to qualify the 3.3 score.
7/22/2008 11:05:57 AM
oh lol. I saw that and thought they took it down maybe.
7/22/2008 11:10:37 AM
Well, this is why folks are starting to almost laugh at Pitchfork. They were the ones who built up The Black Kids and hyped the ever living shit out of them after they played the Pitchfork Festival last year, then they don't have the courtesy to even review their full length debut. Snarky, I understand, but this isn't even funny. (at least the Jet review w/ the youtube clip was hilarious... and deserving, but I digress). The writers of Pitchfork came back and blew them up after their Festival --- The Black Kids released the 4 track Wizard of Ahhhhs EP (which, btw, was originally an 8 track sold at their early shows.. all 8 of those songs are on their new record, including all 4 tracks on the formally released Wizard of Ahhhhs EP that Pitchfork hyped the shit out of).So, now is when I question: Was Pitchfork just fucking around and seeing if they could hype the shit out of a band only to pull the rug out from under them, playing God with an indie band and testing their increasing commercial power OR was the writer pissed off, as I was, that the Black Kids took a year to release a 10 song record, 4 of which were on a released EP? (8 of them, if you count folks like me who had the 8 track early release they did)Unfortunately, we'll never know because the lazy fucks failed to even write a review for it. I would like to assume that it was because they basically just re-released the old tracks with new production and the writer found it uninspired, but... who knows.... we have a picture of 2 dogs. So, now I'll have to go to CokeMachineGlow for a real review.I, personally, like the new record because I did my best to listen to it as if I had never heard the EP. I have several friends who's taste I appreciate who had also never heard the EP, and they love it.I like Pitchfork, but I hate the direction they're taking, partly reflected in this review.[Edited on July 22, 2008 at 11:47 AM. 7/22/2008 11:39:28 AM
Pitchfork was better before they saw themselves as tastemakers.
7/22/2008 12:22:20 PM
Starting to laugh at Pitchfork?
7/22/2008 12:31:28 PM
The review has about as much substance as the album
7/22/2008 1:34:51 PM
^ 4 of the 10 tracks were part of the same EP they praised as the second coming, so I would assume that substance isn't the issue.Again, they didn't bother to write a review, so we'll never know whether it was because they essentially re-released better produced tracks or whether they deemed the record bad because of the other 6 songs.
7/22/2008 2:20:53 PM
Pitchfork is a joke and has been for a long time. They rarely ever spend time talking about the music itself, it's always some failed writer's unfunny/unclever rant/anecdote.
7/22/2008 2:33:35 PM
