could someone convince me not to buy one of these?

I need a new guitar but i'm poor. Debating selling my explorer copy or my ibanez. But I've put too much work in my ibanez to really justify selling it. Its like the first decent guitar i ever owned and i put like really rare pickups in it. Actually the guitar itself is pretty rare although its just an anniversary rg550 copy... I'd sell the explorer and keep the ibanez but having guitars without floating trems is so nice especially since i don't really use that shit outside of recording...

The only other guitar i'd buy is a telecaster but then i'd have to upgrade the pickups (the gibson has burstbuckers) and it would likely be heavier since this one is chambered. Plus i've never tried tuning a tele to B lol. I thought about getting an SG but every one i've played feels really rigid and stuff

Also, don't buy a guitar that hasn't been finished. The shit Gibson is doing where they don't use grain filler or put on a clearcoat is absolute bullshit. Around 2003 when they put out some Melody Makers that were $300 brand new, I could see going cheap on the finish, but now they're selling $850 Les Pauls that don't have a clearcoat.

Yeah I the faded I'm going to get doesn't have a clear coat idk about the grain, but the ones I've seen without the finish look cooler than those with a finish since its basically just bare wood. I don't really care if it gets dings in it or anything and I don't plan on slamming it into concrete more than once a day so I think ill be okay. Idk if I cared about the look that much id get an epiphone heritage, greco or spend a bit more for an esp edwards

I can't speak for the heritage or grecos but the edwards copies are incredibly well made and I've never heard anything bad about them. The markup on new les pauls is pretty insane if you ask me, and I really don't care about looks that much. I actually prefer something a little less flashy. If I had a lp it would probably be a goldtop

It's not about being flashy, it's about preparing a piece of wood so that it will last for decades like a quality guitar should.

The Les Paul Junior was a cheap guitar. Gibson made it cheap by throwing out things like neck binding, adjustable pickups, and trap inlays, but they still built and finished it properly. As a result, a well cared-for 1956 Junior sounds and looks as good as it did when it was new, and the wood is still in good shape. I doubt the same can be said for the unfinished pieces Gibson puts out now. "Faded" as a feature is more than a farce, it's an insult to the customer.

It would be ridiculous for me to expect any guitar i'd ever own and actually played to last for decades. If i bought or was given a super nice guitar i would not play it outside of recording purposes (if that). I wouldn't take a $3,000+ guitar on tour in a $1,000 van. I play a lot of house shows and shit like that and lets not kid around here... i play metal and while it may not be corpsepaint and blastbeats the whole time playing a house show some kid is probably going to slam into me when i'm playing or some asshole is going to spit beer in the air. Whatever comes with the douches who like the kind of music i like. That is not to say that i don't take care of my gear but i'd be much less pissed when someone spits on my 800 guitar as opposed to one that costs more than anything else i own other than my car...

I'm not a collector i just want something that plays great, sounds better and won't progressively degrade on its own.

Just like an unpainted car will rust no matter how well you take care of it, a guitar without a finish will age prematurely.

You spit beer on a guitar with a standard nitro or poly finish and clearcoat, it wipes right off. You spit beer on a "faded" Gibson, and it will soak into the wood. That's completely unacceptable for a guitar that costs nearly a thousand dollars, especially when a comparable amount of money will get you an immaculately built and finished Japanese model.

I'm thinking of installing a Floyd Rose on my strat, considering the styles of music I play, it's really something I should have done a long time ago...


anyone have any pieces of advice? Should I do it myself or have one of the guitar techs at a local shop handle it? I have no idea how difficult it will be.

Retrofitting a Floyd is really difficult. I'd leave it to a pro, especially considering botching the nut installation would make the neck unusable.

If you're going to get a Floyd II, make sure it was made in Germany. A lot of Floyd II's, even the Schaller ones, were made in Korea and will fall apart in a hurry.

Yeah its super confusing. Schaller originally made the floyd rose (the sought after ofr) and the second version of the floyd. I believe the schallers are made at the original plant still but the design is slightly different. I've heard good things about the gotoh trems (or the other company that makes locking tuners and starts with a g... can't remember)

I put a tremolno on my trem because its such a pain the ass. Its pretty much impossible to set it up perfectly also.

OK, so I'm finally done moving around with the Marines and now settled in one place for the foreseeable future...moved out of the extended stay hotel I was in for 6+ months, closed on a house, and got things squared away around the place, or at least enough that I'm ready to start piecing together the collection of instruments and recording gear that I've wanted for a while.

I sold my old Peavey Triumph 60w combo; it was more of a metal-ish type amp than I really wanted, and I almost never played it anymore. I also sold my Fender Champ (silverface) a while back. I have a metallic purple MIM Stratocaster that I want to sell, too, and then I'll be down to the following:

Guitars:
-'91 Gibson Firebird V (sunburst, 2 mini-buckers, stop-bar tailpiece)
-mid-60s Gretsch Corvette (dark red, tremolo bridge)
-Fender single cutaway electro-acoustic (can't remember model)

Amps:
-Fender Hot Rod Deluxe
-Acoustic AG-15 (basic, inexpensive acoustic guitar amp, w/ integrated chorus)

Effects:
-Vox wah
-Big Muff
-old Digitech processor (floor type; rarely use, but worth keeping around)




I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a new Telecaster (American Standard, natural ash, maple neck, standard single coils). I'd also like to find a hollow or semi-hollow electric with P90s (single coil). Maybe an Epiphone Casino or something.


Oh, and I just bought a bunch of Hercules wall-mounts to hang them all on the wall.

Oh, and since my Fender Hot Rod is a 6L6 tubed, AB-type amp, I kinda want to pick up something EL-84 tubed and single-ended. It doesn't need to be powerful; it'll just be for jamming in my extra bedroom and occasional recording. I'm thinking about an Orange AD-5, but I'm very open to suggestions. I haven't even played an AD-5 yet; all I'm going on is internet reviews and Youtube clips.

I find it funny that with all the guitar gear I have had and a lot of which I still have these days, 90% of the time I am playing anymore I am using my friend's tele through a Boss ME-70 multifx into my little Crate V32 Palomino.

My beloved dual rectifier is acting as a pedestal for the V32

I still love my metal setup but I just don't play much metal anymore since I don't live around any of my musician friends who are into that and I don't have the time to play with mediocre local bands who are wanting a lot bigger time commitment than I am interested in these days.

Does anyone here own/use a Tascam DP-24 or Zoom R24?
If so, what are your thoughts. I'm saving for the tascam for recording only.
All mixing etc will be done in a DAW.

If you are doing all your mixing and processing in the DAW, the DP-24 and the R24 aren't really what you want. You should get an audio interface, which will just give you several inputs into your DAW, which you can then mix there. If you want a mixing surface then just buy a seperate control surface. Should be cheaper, much more expandable, and a lot easier to use.

Oh, that's a pretty big piece of information. I just cant stand having to record on one machine, then move the recording somewhere else and do more stuff to it. Makes it a pain to manage multiple takes and stuff. But if you want it to be mobile, it's your only option outside of a laptop and a MOTU UltraLite (which I would still prefer because it's all in one place).

I agree. Recording is a pain in the ass and the less stuff you have to set up the better. You want to try to do as much processing inside a DAW as possible. Having a bunch of wav files from different tracks with different settings can be a pain in the ass to import into a DAW. However this is my experience with older recording work stations (some Alesis shit and some other random things)

i forgot what i was talking about but i've run a live recording set up at the pour house before and it was a pain in the ass to set up. We basically took a bunch of lineouts from the live board into an interface and DAW. Still took forever to setup and most sound guys don't want to spend time helping someone else get a good sound.


However if you're trying to record some black metal in the forest then i totally support what you're doing.

Nothing serious. Sometimes I have some friends over and we jam and I like to record it.
This would let me set up for let's say:
two overhead mics and a kick for the drums
a vocal mic
DI for the bass
DI dry for the guitar plus an input for a cab mic
and still have option for an occasional second guitar, vocal, keys.
There would be no overdubs or punching in or multiple takes.

then go back and have fun mixing when ever I feel like it.

New toys! American Deluxe Telecaster with ash body, and an inexpensive Musicman SUB series bass (my first bass--I got it for recording).

I got the Tele for stupidly cheap, used at Guitar Center (2 months old, plastic film still on the pick guard). Like, cheaper than you could buy a new Standard. Hell, probably cheaper than you could buy a Special and a hard case.

I'm starting to get the itch again. About 3 years ago I was a bit curious about the Peavey Vypyr modeling amps. I never got one. Anyone have any experience with these?

I already have a good amplifier so it's not like I need one. I'm just looking for a cheap way to get lots of effects on the cheap without having to resort to buying lots of pedals. I bought an all-in-one pedal in the past (zoom 505), it sounded terrible though - every effect sounded extremely artificial and there wasn't one decent distortion setting. It was like $99 or something so it's not like I should have expected much. So any multi-effect pedal that people could chime in on would also be welcome.

The last time I got the itch I bought an Ibanez s520ex to fill the void for my very old Ibanez s540ltd that was (and still is unfortunately) in rough shape. After the dust settled I ended up selling the 520 because the pickups sounded like absolute garbage compared to the ones in the 540. Now I'm finding myself wanting another s series but I see that all the sub $1K models still come with those same INF pickups, which I've grown to hate. It's a shame they nerf an otherwise awesome guitar with such poor quality pickups. Maybe an alternative would be to pick up a cheaper s series and replace the pickups. Any recommendations there?

I love S series guitar and own multiple over a range (low, mid, high-end). I have always changed the pickups out though as soon as I bought any, even my high-end custom one I got. Ibanez makes some good guitars but their stock pickups are usually not very good imo.

As far as mult-fx go, the Boss ME-70 is really pretty decent especially if you can find one used.
