SB 155 filed yesterday would finally allow a change to the Sunday alcohol sales law - restaurants could begin serving at 10am if voters approve, although you still couldn't buy from retail outlets until noon. A few other changes in there as well related to liquor. I'd prefer the bill just make sales on Sunday the same time as every day of the week, but at least it's progress on the Sunday alcohol front.http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2017&BillID=S155

WaitIs this the first good thing they're proposed in 27 pages of this thread?Nm this is clearly a bi-partisan bill[Edited on March 2, 2017 at 8:55 AM. Reason : ]
3/2/2017 8:53:40 AM
Yea, didn't mean to imply it was a GOP only bill. I'm assuming the House bill will also be bi-partisan, but we'll see when it's filed.
3/2/2017 11:20:54 AM
This one is bi-partisan too but the R's control the legislature so it's getting filed in this thread. HB 279 seeks to regulate the scourge of fantasy sports...http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2017&BillID=H279Very ambiguous language in this bill that I could easily see being applied by some busybody at the secretary of state's office to your office fantasy league - despite the "good intentions" of the bill drafters for it to only apply to those big fantasy leagues that advertise incessantly. But this still accepts the premise that fantasy sports should be regulated by the state... a premise I reject.
3/9/2017 1:54:20 PM
the good thing at least is that it explicitly legalizes commercial fantasy leagues, but its pretty dumb the way its written with no exclusions. the obvious exclusion should be if there is no net revenue
3/9/2017 2:02:00 PM
Can we agree the NC GOP has no credibility. Consistently in Oregon i hear more about those clowns than any other state combined in the national news.
3/9/2017 8:39:21 PM
It's almost as if Rep. Saine is proud of being a whore, how else can you explain this tweet? See, the current market participants support our bill to erect barriers to entry for competitors, so the rest of you should like this bill too.https://twitter.com/JasonSaine97th/status/839918804230627329

http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/2017/03/10/fake-news-gop-leader-bergers-staff-alters-headlines-cooper/98997970/Phil Berger caught using some Facebook editing tool? To change newspaper headlines and pictures such that they painted Gov. Cooper in as bad of light as possible. Berger has always been a lying asshole, but come the fuck on. I just known Auntie Gertrude up in Eden is eating that shit up too. Fuck this guy and his supporters.

3/30/2017 9:34:40 AM
Other than the fact that this moratorium supposedly ends in 4 years, I agree. Plus there's nothing to say that the GA won't try to re-up that ban if they keep their seats.

This is an NC GOP sponsored bill to repeal an earlier disastrous NC GOP bill that has garnered widespread disdain and has cost this state untold billions of dollars. What exactly are you trying to argue here HCH?
3/30/2017 12:17:08 PM
its a republican bill, they get 100% of the fault for causing this problemcooper loses credibility for signing it, but republicans left him with little choiceboth deserve criticism, but the NC GOP still owns this clusterfuck
3/30/2017 12:17:56 PM
HCH, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.Cooper doing the best he can to make sure that permanent damage isn't done to the state. It's a shitty compromise that he's having to make in order for the NCGA to stop doubling down on making the state a laughingstock and keep it from losing more business. It's a step in the right direction though, even if the GA still wants to keep legislating city gov't (which I thought was against GOP cornerstone principals, but whatever).So...if you want this in the Cooper thread it'd be + credibility anyway for trying to make the most of this shit situation the GOP put us in.[Edited on March 30, 2017 at 12:23 PM. it pains me how so many people don't realize how little power Cooper actually has when dealing with the NCGAand those same people don't seem to understand that a lot of these people can be voted out during the next round of elections, and that while this isn't a perfect solution, it's at the very least a foot in the door
3/30/2017 4:25:46 PM
We are currently set for a full election for all 170 members of the NC House/Senate under redrawn districts, btw.

There is a representative from Pender county who wants to impeach the NC Secretary of State over the process to get certified as a notary public. Apparently there are like 300+ people across the state who do not have full legal citizenship yet are notary publics, and this guy has taken issue with it.Is he slow or something? Impeaching someone over something so small of an issue will just draw a lot of negative publicity to the issue and cost a lot of money. Why not just tackle each case of "improper" notary public certifications on a case by case basis, then add some oversight if he thinks it is needed.

-10,000 for being christo-fascists and wasting the state'stime and money+10 for being amazingly persistent. They just keep getting back up and passing these zany bills even after being slapped down by the courts repeatedly.
4/11/2017 6:09:49 PM
The NCAA should have never decided to return to NC. The HB2 '"compromise" was complete bullshit. This bill is of course another total embarrassment. The problem is gerrymandered districts and half the candidates running unopposed.

NC Beer Wine Wholesaler lobbyists and pro-business (not pro-market) wing of the NC GOP wins again. Craft Freedom appears to be dead this session...http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/politics-columns-blogs/under-the-dome/article145451619.html

And a little more background on the provisions removed from HB500. The ABC hearing today at 3pm should be interesting, it's being livestreamed by the Craft Freedom folks.https://www.carolinajournal.com/news-article/craft-brewers-not-giving-up-on-expanding-self-distribution/
4/19/2017 12:32:27 PM
So would you say it's more the distribution companies or actual beer bottlers (In Bev) running interference?I was hoping Miller leaving Eden would push Berger's vindictive buttons and he'd come out swinging on some of these. But money talks I guess.
4/19/2017 8:22:51 PM
Yes, I'd say it's 98% the fault of the NC Beer and Wine Wholesalers Assoc. (the distributors) and their lobbyist and 2% the fault of Rev. Creech and his Baptist website. The original bootlegger-baptist coalition. I can't find the stat right now, but the distributors and their lobbying arm gave $1.5 million in campaign contributions over the past 3-4 years. Hopefully the @ncbeer/Craft Freedom folks will actually name the legislators responsible for killing this bill so they can be targeted in next year's election.

I hope we can at least get traction on the Brunch Bill.

I haven't seen that one make it to a committee hearing yet. It still doesn't allow for retail sales before noon for some inexplicable reason, but it's progress I suppose.
