well hes a joint doctor. you can't blame him.calling him (or any other doctor) an idiot seems pretty harsh and unreasonable....(im biased here of course!)[Edited on March 18, 2011 at 2:13 PM. Reason : and let me clarify-he seemed pretty against **heavy** weightlifting]

So this is the last day of my fourth week that I've been working out six days a week alternating cardio / strength training... and man I didn't want to do it today. I mean of course there will be days where motivation isn't exactly overpowering me or anything, but I just didn't want to do it.For some reason, ab work is not getting any easier after doing it after every workout and that's a little frustrating. I do ten sets of ten different crunches, so it's not like it's a ton.Lately it's been more "Hey, just keep doing what you're doing. It's not like exercise is a bad thing... the body will catch up." I've lost at least 12.1 lbs (5.5 kg), and if the scale is correct right now we can add another three lbs or so to that. 15 lbs in the first month is actually pretty good. Just wish my inches would catch up.
3/19/2011 12:36:02 PM
I had a friend who was losing weight. His weight would drop and then he'd notice changes in his body, they never happened at the same time. Keep it up, progress is progress.
3/19/2011 12:54:09 PM
^^might wanna think about reducing ab workouts to 2-3 days a weekGains might be easier to recognize if you would give the muscles time to recover/rebuild

What do you guys do when you're sick, just take time off from exercising or power through it?I have a really annoying sinus infection that antibiotics still haven't kicked in the ass and when I try to go jogging it ends up being more of a walking and pathetically breathing through my mouth because my nose doesn't work situation. But I feel like not doing anything at all would be worse.
3/19/2011 7:54:24 PM
Mine depends on how sick I am. If it's sinus stuff I power through but if it's fever and body aches then forget it. I just consume copious amounts of orange juice and pray I don't lose any weight.
3/19/2011 10:13:06 PM
I have weighted around 170 pds (5'10") for the last 8 years, whenever I go to the doc, it is 170....of course, I run a hour a day 6 days a week (even though motivation is starting to get much harder than it was back in the day)....I keep running later and later and later.....I am just getting old I think..... If I stop running I would probably gain about 15 pds.

You know your weight loss diet is working when you crave carby-awesome foods such as cheese fries, reeses cup and cookies. It's so tempting. I find myself making up justifications for little "cheats" or diet breaks.Must. stay. strong.[Edited on March 20, 2011 at 8:10 PM. Reason : l]

sooooooo i played around with eating different foods that have sulfites in them - yeah definitely avoiding sulfite with a passion.i gained 7 pounds over the weekend - mostly bloat i would suspect since my hands and feet have been swollen from the sulfite since Friday. but still disappointing nonetheless when i step on the scale and see it go up that much in just a couple of days. now to detox. i have to avoid a lot of things with sulfite, sulfur, etc in it but i also have to avoid things with corn starch, corn syrup, molasses, and modified food starch. which as you know are "bad for you items" anyways and but they're in freaking everything!i found a pretty detailed list of things i need to avoid if anyone is interested. http://www.allergy-details.com/sulfites/foods-contain-sulfites/it's funny - a lot of it is processed stuff but then there's the canned veggies and dried fruit i have to avoid, along with most frozen items too. i will say - definitely no more shrimp (it's on the list of no-no items). my hands were swollen and red for over 12 hours after consuming. thankfully i like to cook most things from scratch and eat a lot of fresh stuff - but still way hard. i need to find a good homemade bread recipe since a lot of the breads i found in the store are super processed.

^Wow that sucks but it will force you to be super healthy which is a good thing, right? I've been looking for a good site to input my calories and have been vastly disappointed with many not having what I eat in their system or have a horrible configuration. I happened to google the caloric intake of a beef 93/7 burger and clicked on caloriecounter.com and was pleasantly surprised! It has everything I eat, it's easy to find and log and you can also log weight and activity. When I first signed up it set a goal based on my current weight and height to eat 2,200 calories a day. I was all and think I'm going to lower it a bit. BUUUUUUUUUUT it even has a chart on how much chlos, fat, sat fat, protein, carbs, etc you are getting and what your max & min intake should be a day. Apparently yesterday i took in the max amount of calcium recommended. I knew I liked milk but damn.

I have to be in a wedding in July in a strapless dress and my arms are all flabby. Plz to help??Also, I'm cutting as much sugar/ simple carbs as possible out of my diet because of PCOS/insulin resistance. Any tips for sugar cravings? I don't really do artificial sweeteners.I'm looking to start eating more things with a low glycemic index http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycemic_index Never been a dieter. Never cared. I'm becoming more and more at risk for developing diabeetus and it scares me a bit. Anyone been through anything similar?
3/21/2011 6:02:48 PM
I am sensitive to sugar intake. I just avoid it for the most part. I had blood work done and my blood sugar level was leaning towards the bad side. The change was really easy for me but I have an abnormal self control when it comes to food/drugs. You end up eating pretty healthy by default if you simply avoid things with >20g of sugar.
3/21/2011 6:30:28 PM
^thats what i do. I avoid things with lots of sugar and also lots of sodiumThose two catagories essentially cut out most bad things when it comes to eating.

good news is that i've merely strained my tendon in my foot, not broken or anything.bad news is i have to adjust my workouts for the next two weeks. no running, jumping etc. still finishing out bootcamp, just getting to do a lot of modifications.

Started a class on Personal Trainer Certification yesterday, really excited to learn more about the physiology/anatomy of the body and how to make my own work outs better. With that, I've had to adjust my workout schedule to do a couple morning workouts a week, yuck.

Does anyone know where to find a good site about diet/exercise information for men? Everything I've found seems like its trying to sell me something. I'd really like to know what works as far as high protein/low carb or whatever. I'm 5'10, 24 years old, and weighed 171 this morning (after 17 days of feasting and drinking in Europe). I'd really like to get down to 155-160 and would like to do it by graduation in May if that is possible. My big problem is calories from alcohol (10 beers a day on average), a strong preference for red meat (steak), potatoes, rice, and lack of cardio. I never, ever eat desert (don't even like sweets), drink soft drinks or caffeine and rarely eat fast food. I love salads, sushi, fish, chicken, etc. and could easily go on a diet like that. I've always had really fast metabolism but I think conscious efforts to exercise and making little changes like walking to class or running with my dog for 30 minutes a day would help a lot. Also, I'm going to cut way back on drinking not only to lose weight but also because I've gotta find a jerb come May. I like to exercise (tennis, running, cycling, etc.) but just haven't included it into my schedule as a grad student (put on my freshman 15 in grad school). The only thing I do regularly "athletic" is league bowling and practicing for that several days a week (but alas much beer is had during these times, which will also be cut out). Any advice would be greatly appreciated but again, I realize the 1500 calories a day from drinking and alcohol abuse, etc. alone in itself is a problem so I'd prefer to not be preached at about that but just get some practical advice about what to eat and how frequently to exercise. thanks[Edited on March 22, 2011 at 11:41 AM. Any numerical weight goals for men seem misguided. You're not battling with the scale as much as you are with the mirror, and too many guys get over focused on shedding pounds. You have mix in some resistant training or you're just going to look like a flabby bag of skin. Remember, lots of athletes are technically obese, and they're in better shape than all of us.
3/22/2011 11:39:00 AM
so weight lifting is the way to go to tighten up? I feel like all of my fat goes to my belly and my face.

If you actually have a fast metabolism and you just stop drinking, you'll lose weight quickly without doing much of anything.
3/22/2011 12:08:54 PM
Weights and Calisthenics are the best way to tighten up. Anyone can be skinny, but does it really matter if you still have old lady underarms and bitch tits?

Joie- My nutritionist and endocrinologist say it deals with insulin resistance which then causes insulin and glucose to hang out in the blood and raise insulin production. That then causes cortisol levels to rise and you to crave more food. I don't know how to describe it too eloquently, but I was definitely dealing with insulin resistance and cutting out the caffeine has help me to regulate my glucose levels so much better.I was drinking the sugar free amp all the time. Also, you can still drink diet ginger ale, crazy. No caffeine or carb/sugar in that. That is what I have been drinking since I was told I couldn't drink diet with caffeine.]
