So we finally got this in our neighborhood and I'm wondering how bad the cap is gonna be. We do a good three hours of HD Netflix a day (roughly), so it sounds like we'd easily hit 250GB in a month. Anyone do a comparable amount of streaming? Any concerns about the cap?
4/2/2011 8:29:26 PM
I was all excited when I got a message that I now can get U-verse fiber to the house, but then was instantly sadden when they have the 250GB cap... Was really hoping for 24/3, but whats the point? HD netflix can suck your bandwidth in a matter of days. I mean come on... my FTP server allows me 250TB of monthly quota transfers, oh snap, its unlimited now. I pay like nothing for it.For 127+ a month with HD TV, it better be completely unlimited. Honestly, I can survive with 6 down, but TWC 44KB up is killing me with slow transfer rates for my HD vids.

I imagine Netflix will probably end up doing something like this if AT&T does end up putting the caps in place.
4/5/2011 2:44:48 AM
I don't think it's a matter of "if", they've committed to starting the caps next month.
4/5/2011 9:08:01 AM
i haven't signed up for netflix until i see how the caps play out. what kind of data rates are exchanged during online gameplay?
4/5/2011 3:26:13 PM
Why would you avoid Netflix because of data-caps?
4/5/2011 3:27:25 PM
i've never had netflix. not having it for a while longer won't hurt me.

This thread probably has the worst title of any 27+ page thread in history. Exactly why when I made teh google Android thread I did not make it about a handset or release date....I knew that thread would live on.
4/8/2011 9:08:02 AM
i briefly considered U-verse, but after learning about the caps, fuck no. (i don't know if I even come close to that, but I watch a lot of netflix.
4/8/2011 10:47:00 AM
Just received an e-mail letting me know U-Verse is finally available for me. Too bad they couldn't get that done before time warner's docsis 3 upgrade.
4/13/2011 1:06:12 PM
Indeed, as much hatred as I harbored against Time Warner, AT&T has just lost me as a customer so I can give this new 30/5 a whirl for 12 months.
4/13/2011 4:59:11 PM
the us is still mostly a digital backwater as far as average broadband speed goes. both in total amount AND in $/mbps costs, the former being low and the latter being high.
4/13/2011 5:12:38 PM
^ how much does that have to do with the larger land mass (compared with places like korea and japan), and how much is it due to lack of [widespread] consumer demand (Again compared with korea and japan), and how much is due to most areas allowing monopolies on telecom/cable?
4/13/2011 5:46:20 PM
CANCELED for TWC 30/5 service.Might come back if the CAPS stay away and TWC starts sucking balls again.
4/14/2011 12:53:40 AM
Just signed up today. Might watch 3 hours of instant watch netflix a week so we will see how the caps goes. If I keep going over I will probably cancel.I usually watch instant while I am waiting for a new DVD to arrive so hopefully I'll be OK. I don't torrent as much as I used to but that may be a concern. They didn't mention anything about caps to me at all. Of course, why would they.Damn the door to door lady was dumb as hell.
5/31/2011 2:31:45 PM
Can someone give me the cliff notes about the caps?Should me and my roomate slow down on the netflix instant (think something like 15-18 hours were watched this weekend), or wait for some notification from AT&T about caps (I'm thinking the latter)
5/31/2011 3:04:19 PM
I would wait for a notification. I they don't notify you then they shouldn't be able to charge you. There is a 2 month grace period so they won't start charging you until the 3rd month. I highly doubt it resets if you lay low for a month. Yea, I have questions too.
5/31/2011 3:07:10 PM
i'll check my next bill but i don't even recall seeing anythign about cap space or usage. But then again I probably don't reach near the cap these days as I barely torrent unless it's a movie I want to see and don't care for blu-ray and I don't have netflix yet.
5/31/2011 3:53:13 PM
get with the times man!
5/31/2011 3:55:35 PM
Best I can tell, the infrastructure for tracking the data usage in the Raleigh area is not working yet. As such, go to the web-site and see if it is evening working for you. If not, I was told they are planning to let you track your usage for three months before beginning to issue warnings. As such, if the web site is not working, then check back in three months or so.
5/31/2011 4:14:05 PM
I'm all for capping the extra heavy internet users if it helps my speed out but I better not be considered one of the 2% they are trying to cap.
5/31/2011 4:21:05 PM
It's not working currently. Checked it like an hour ago.
5/31/2011 4:38:19 PM
Def satisfied so far. I love the transparent menu and video quality. It wasn't as dramatic a step up as I had hoped but it is still a step up. My netflix stream has without a doubt improved. It said my vid quality was X-High. I'm not sure what it was before but Lost looked amazing when I tested the stream out. Should be able to watch stuff this week. I was so busy this weekend.
6/6/2011 2:41:34 PM
what internet speed did you go with?
6/6/2011 3:06:43 PM
The max package 12Mbps downThe install guy told me that some NC State football players were charging some other people in their dorm to use their U-Verse router. Evidently you can have 140 different devices connected to it without a loss in performance. You have to sign an agreement to not let your neighbors use your router because of this.
6/6/2011 3:39:26 PM
jesus. that's funny. i just don't use that many devices to warrant it. hell, i only touch my laptop at home once every few days.
6/6/2011 3:42:56 PM
I just wonder who on the team it was who according to the install guy made around 40 grand. He said the QB but I highly doubt it was Russell Wilson. He said it was a few years ago so maybe Daniel Evans. Dude was probably a Carolina fan anyway but I don't doubt it went down in some way.
6/6/2011 3:48:29 PM
we are getting this installed on Wednesday ... can't wait to be completely rid of Time Warner(18 Mbps plan)
6/6/2011 4:03:32 PM
6/6/2011 4:42:27 PM
i don't really know the technical details seems like if you had a whole dorm on one router it would be slow as shit but I guess they made it work according to this dudeprobably shouldn't believe a stranger anyway
6/6/2011 4:55:06 PM
Did you not see the movie "The Cable Guy"? that sum up trusting people like that... 12/1? I can eat through the cap in a few days with the amount of netflix and other media hoggingness that I do. I just watched all 8 seasons of 24 and a few other movies streamed in the last two weeks while dl some new games off of steam. That's a shit ton of data.Does TWC have a cap for their comparable fiber to home service? I know the current regular service is capped at like 100 or 150gb, although I'm on an old old contract that doesn't state it so I assume I don't have that restriction (if not, I haven't been notified of being the 2% bandwidth hoggers). And I know I hog some internet.
6/7/2011 5:10:28 AM
Well I got the call from TWC last night and they offered me what I had plus Showtime and a Roadrunner upgrade all for 70 bucks a month. I hate the way they bill people. Why can't you just charge everyone the same fair rate? One less reason people wouldn't hate you because there are plenty.
6/7/2011 10:18:19 AM
woah... when did TWC upgrade the upload speed? I just noticed last night that its now 1mbps up and not the usually slow 384kbps. Although, it still pretty shitty dl with a lot of jitter.
6/7/2011 11:51:30 AM
yeh, twc bumped uploads to 1mbps... which I actually get... surprisingI signed up for the 7/.25 package... and got 2/.1.... then they "signed" me up for 10/.25 for free... and now I get 1/1
6/7/2011 1:25:52 PM
dammit looks like i'm going to have to wire my ps3 from my router in the kitchen since that was the only place i had a phone jack....it is going to suck trying to hide that long ass cable
6/7/2011 1:42:48 PM
the GUI change a little for anyone else overnight?
6/9/2011 8:57:56 PM
yeah, getting some odd speeds during 3am, stuck around 1/1 but during peak traffic hours I'm at 7/1.
6/9/2011 9:16:03 PM
our uverse internet gets installed tomorrow (got pushed back from Wed.)
6/9/2011 9:18:42 PM
Looks like they added additional submenus. Most notably a bar showing your DVR usage.
6/9/2011 9:23:20 PM
6/10/2011 9:07:45 AM
I am moving in a couple of months and no uVerse at new place. Guess its back to Road Runner with promo and Direct TV.
6/10/2011 9:21:18 AM
Had a guy come to my door last night for this...sounded like a good dealDigital cable + DVR, all channels except HBO and Cinemax1st tier (12mbps?) internetfree installation$99.00/mo for a year
6/10/2011 11:35:11 AM
dammit i only got that for 6 months
6/10/2011 12:36:14 PM
No ATT at my new residence, help me decide DirectTV or TWC
6/11/2011 6:14:11 PM
6/11/2011 7:02:51 PM

6/11/2011 7:07:38 PM
Any way to disable the emergency messages that pop up?? Damn near scares the hell out of me when I've got the surround sound thumping.
6/11/2011 7:43:21 PM
^ I wish. Stupid Government.
