I am definitely not disputing that others have had it worse. I just think he is a mediocre coach with potential put in a tough situation. Crean is a really good coach, and he has done very well with IU (I can't comment on the other 2 guys because I don't really follow those programs). It's the same reason why some teams choose to draft a guy in the first round then sit him for a year or two (particularly QB's). It gives them time to get acclimated, so they are actually ready for the big time challenges when they come (and let's face it, coaching at NCSU is a huge challenge.)

Id love to land Jay Wright, his contract only runs till 2012.if not him, Mike Brey is a decent pickup along with the Miller bros.

I'm kind of at peace now that there's nothing to argue about until the coaching search.I do feel sorry for Smith. No NCAA tourney for his whole career. He deserves better.Let's hope Yow is a lot better than Fowler at keeping our current players and recruits on board. I'm a little excited about getting someone in here who can actually coach.
2/3/2011 7:42:59 AM
We have about a 0% chance of landing Jay Wright

first and foremost, mentioning jay wright should be a suspendable offense.secondly

I know you probably don't follow the Big 10 or IU, but when Crean came there, IU was facing major violations leading to 3 years of probation. Getting anyone to come play for IU was a challenge, much less anyone who had a clue about how to play basketball. He has really turned the program around, from a doormat starting a bunch of no-name freshmen, to a team that is finally fairly competitive within their conference. They have won two straight games against ranked opponents after 19 straight losses, and honestly, of the 6 games against ranked teams they played, they only were not "in" one game (against Ohio State).Tom Crean is an awesome coach, and if NCSU could land someone of his caliber they would be extremely fortunate.
2/3/2011 12:31:16 PM
But, on an absolute scale, none of what you said qualifies as very wellHe seems to be turning the corner, but he's still a way away from having done very well

Crean is a very, very good coach and if he would leave IU for State (hahahahahahhahahahah) you'd have to be one of the dumbest people alive not to want him.I saw someone mention Capel earlier and I think he could be a decent comparison to Crean, minus actually having his own high-major success..[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 12:57 PM. Reason : in terms of stepping in to a shitty situation]
2/3/2011 12:55:40 PM
i would never turn down tom crean, and i feel dumb even discussing it b/c there's no reason whatsoever to leave a struggling indiana program for a struggling nc state program.however, if we're talking dream hires, tom crean isn't even on my radar.
2/3/2011 12:57:30 PM
I guess I don't understand why you wouldn't place him in that top category. A 44 year old coach who has made a Final Four, has loads of high-major experience and isn't afraid to jump in to a shitty situation.I agree it's silly to even talk about him, but I've never understood your aversion to calling him a top coach. He is and his time at Indiana, much like Marquette, will prove that...V and IIRC, wasn't Griffin handed to him by Sampson or am I off a year? that's why I said "his own" high-major success[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 1:02 PM. 2/3/2011 12:59:04 PM
I used to think Capel was a good coach then I realized he just had Blake Griffin
2/3/2011 1:01:27 PM
From what little Marquette/Indiana basketball I've watched over the years, I've determined that Tom Crean is the angriest white man in America
2/3/2011 1:02:22 PM
^^^ i just am not that impressed w/ him, honestly. save his final four appearance and he's made the tournament four times, for a combined single win. his coaching record is actually nearly identical to paul hewitt.crean: 217-153 (0.586), 5 ncaa appearances, 1 final four, 1 second round over 12 seasonshewitt: 242-169 (0.589), 6 ncaa appearances, 1 final four, 2 second rounds over 13 seasonsyou can say what you want about being marquette in the big east, or the states of marquette and indiana before he got there, but i just don't think that he's a guy that's a sure thing to really do well.like i said, i'd hire him in a heartbeat, but if we're going to talk about totally unrealistic things he's not in my conversation.[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 1:06 PM. OKAY RETARD, SHOW ME WHERE HE'S DONE "VERY WELL", B/C I'M PRETTY SURE HE HASN'T WON MORE THAN FOUR CONFERENCE GAMES YET.
2/3/2011 1:07:21 PM
A Crean/Hewitt comparison! ahahahasimonn is a stone cold killer
2/3/2011 1:11:05 PM
i can't help how similar the numbers are.
2/3/2011 1:12:17 PM
No, I'm totally behind youCrean is a better coach than Hewitt, but he's not eliteThose numbers are awesome, though[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 1:13 PM. Reason : and lol at the anti-Sid crowd harping on how tough Crean's situation was]

Sidney is an awful coach. Fire him now.

yes, yes it is

2/3/2011 1:40:44 PM
Honest question... I wonder if we'd have a shot at Crean just based on the fact that he's on quite a hot seat in Indiana. I realize we're not nearly the job of Indy, but I wonder if he'd be interested in leaving due to an uncertain future? Some of you would know about how hot his seat is there. Crean is a good coach. (And i realize it'll never happen, obviously, just a thought).
2/3/2011 1:45:58 PM
it's ice coldthey absolutely love him up there
2/3/2011 1:48:42 PM
^^Crean isn't going anywhere IMO...He couldn't help he walked into a team on probation[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 1:49 PM. Reason : d]
2/3/2011 1:48:55 PM
Interesting. I thought people were starting to get onto him. Guess I heard wrong. So the answer is "Hell no" to him possibly leaving before being forced out, eh?

Martin is probably more demonstrative in his anger, but Crean perpetually looks like he's about to butt rape everything in the midwest. He has a scowl straight outta Hell.

^They actually have three wins, barely halfway into the conference season and have now beaten two ranked teams (and barely lost to MSU in overtime at East Lansing). Look at the rest of their games and they are close in every one.So....yes.
2/3/2011 2:17:02 PM
Frank Martin looks like he just ordered a burger w/o cheese but got cheese anyway
2/3/2011 2:18:21 PM
Three wins, my bad. That puts them in a tie for next to last instead of a tie for last.

2/3/2011 2:41:36 PM
Who said anything about 41-point lossesI'm not trying to compare Sid and Crean, I thought I made that clear. There's just very little evidence that Crean is doing very well in an absolute sense. He's doing okay considering the circumstances, but he's got a long, long way to go.
2/3/2011 2:49:20 PM
Let's just put it this way, if we played Indiana on a neutral court they would make us look stupid.[Edited on February 3, 2011 at 2:52 PM. Reason : []
