I don't know how this trash can fire isn't setting the entire town ablaze.

How much more evidence do you need to show that every single investigation at UNC over the last few years was a complete sham.

And now a message from the Chancellor:

Quote :
"Dear Carolina Community:

I am writing today to provide my perspective on a topic that has been reported in the media recently, and more importantly, is of great concern to our community: what we are doing to ensure the integrity of our support for student-athletes and their success from admission to graduation. Carolina’s recent academic and athletic improprieties shook our University to its core. In spite of seven investigations (http://rawlingspanel.web.unc.edu/related-links/) and numerous reforms already in place, this continues to be a painful journey for the Carolina community, and I will not ignore the lessons learned.

Even as we continue this work, Carolina is facing a surge of new stories in the national and local media about the academic preparation of our student-athletes. This interest was sparked in part by highly publicized claims about student literacy, and continues in the media almost daily. I take these claims very seriously, but we have been unable to reconcile these claims with either our own facts or with those data currently being cited as the source for the claims. Moreover, the data presented in the media does not match up with those data gathered by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. For example, only two of the 321 student-athletes admitted in 2012 and 2013 fell below the SAT and ACT levels that were cited in a recent CNN report as the threshold for reading levels for first-year students. And those two students are in good academic standing. Nevertheless, we are investigating all the claims being made and, if they are found to have merit, I will take all appropriate actions. We also will do our best to correct assertions we believe are not based in fact.

This issue is part of a larger national conversation about the role and impact of college sports and even further about the commitment schools make to ensure their students receive the support they need to succeed in the classroom as well as on the playing field. I assure you that I will not accept anything less than the excellence we expect Carolina to represent for our students and the community.

I am asking for your patience and understanding today. I still have many questions, and I am seeking to understand the complete picture of what additional work we need to do in this area. We have learned many lessons in the past few years, and I am actively building on those lessons to continue to improve our community. It is our responsibility to address these issues, the people involved, and the media attention being generated by them, very thoughtfully and thoroughly. Our goals are to be proactive in our analysis and solutions, to protect the privacy rights of individual students, and to apply the rigorous standards of assessment expected here at Carolina. Whether we agree or disagree, we must welcome healthy debate, respect each other and in that way show the true character of our Carolina community.

In closing, I want to thank you for your commitment to and concern for our students, faculty and staff, and for making this great institution even stronger. I will keep you informed of our progress and the results of our work. Our impressive, dedicated and talented students from the classroom to the playing field – and the work of our faculty and staff to improve the lives of millions of North Carolinians – is what makes us so proud of Carolina every day.

Best,

Carol L. Folt
Chancellor"

How dumb do they think we are? The claims made by Willingham comes from data spanning nearly a decade, and doesn't even include 2013. Maybe their graduates can't read but the rest of us can.

Also, why bother including athletes that aren't football or men's basketball players (unless you're a women's basketball school like Uconn or Tennessee)?

^^Obviously padding the stats with the benchwarmers and other players who are just walk-ons. Again lets talk about the revenue sports as that is all anybody is concerned with. The regular kids who also play lacrosse are not the ones getting hooked up with drug dealers, free rental cars, endorsing mouthguards, getting free A's and tutors, etc.

So they released more information:

Quote :
"Of the student-athletes who enrolled between 2004 and 2012 under the special-talent policies, 341 were recruited for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. More than 90 percent (307) of these students met the CNN threshold. Thirty-four of these student-athletes (9.97 percent) did not meet the threshold."

https://uncnews.unc.edu/2014/01/16/97-unc-student-athletes-meet-cnn-reading-skills-threshold-8-year-admissions-analysis-questions-claims-network-news-story/

I thought Willingham was administering actual literacy tests, not doing this CNN threshold business. But whatever...I never looked into her research because whether or not these guys can read isn't really the issue.

But, uh, if their athletes are and have been largely "college-literate" for some time, then why all the fake classes/grade changes? Are they admitting that they funneled perfectly capable students into classes that taught them nothing? Cause that's even worse than when they supposedly couldn't read.

I can't wait for her lawsuit and when she basically releases all the data into the public domain in court in order to prove her case. It's gonna be even better than the McAdoo trial.

Also, I don't believe UNC's numbers reported in that press release one bit. They've done nothing but lie about everything for the past 4 years. I'm looking forward to the record requests that will come from this where they can finally be proven, beyond a doubt, to be lying through their teeth in press releases.

I like how Folt's letter only seems to be concerned with that fact that they are being accused of bringing in guys who cannot read. No mention of the fact that they had AN ENTIRE ACADEMIC DEPT full of sham classes.

Honestly who cares if the players can read or not, if they are being funneled to fake classes that is what really matters. These guys could all have 160 IQs, but UNC having them take no-show classes is the true travesty and what should really bite UNC in the ass.

I also love how they are proud of the fact that out of the illeterate students that they did bring in... most graduated! This is something to be proud of!

Quote :
"Thirty-four of these student-athletes (9.97 percent) did not meet the threshold. "

Quote :
"In summary, 30 of these 34 students (88 percent) either graduated from the University, remain enrolled and in good academic standing, or left the University academically eligible to return."

So out of the 34 enrollees who were admitted with the reading comprehension of a 8/9 year old, 30 have graduated or are eligible to graduate!

Is it bad that the part of that ^ press release that aggravates me the most is how many times they use the word 'Carolina' to refer to the university? I'm not saying 'Carolina' means South Carolina or anything, but they must use it a dozen times, when they could easily throw in a few 'the University' or 'UNC' or something instead. Not professional at all.

I noticed it too in the statement from the Chancellor, or whatever her title is.

I get it from the SBP. They are kids who can't think straight. So they probably think there is something magical in the Carolina name.

But for the actual professionals to use it is very unprofessional.

FYI I'm sure he is in a statistics or mathematics research program and that is how he quickly pored over the data from Mary and was able to come to this scientific conclusion.

Oh wait, here is his major from his SBP Candidate page:

http://www.christylambden.com/christy.php

Major: Philosophy and Political Science

Yep, now it makes more sense.

Quote :
"It is my pledge to all students at Carolina that I will always put Carolina First"

Guess he just proved that. In front of his dignity, self-respect, scientific evidence, etc. Congrats your a shill and a pawn in their game. Enjoy that Political Science degree.

https://scontent-a-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1385214_10202288064069702_1243206580_n.jpg

Now I graduated way back in 2002, so my memory isn't fresh, but I'm pretty damn sure we had nowhere near this long to drop classes. But I guess The Carolina Way includes flunking a class for nearly 2 months, then dropping it with no penalty. Another easy way to help grade inflation.

made the mistake of posting in the comments section on a N+O article.

It's a waste of time, those jackasses have their heads so far in the sand that they could be presented an FBI-verified video of Dean Smith forging grade changes and telling the camera exactly how the whole thing got started and it would just extend his legacy in their eyes.

When you have been entitled your whole life you just assume you are better than everyone else and that your way is the only way

but godammit do I hope they burn to the fucking ground. maybe god will take a vacation from his carolina blue sky and come down to assrape them.

Wait, how is what UNC is saying right now a refutation of Willingham's claims? She said, according to the CNN article, between 8 and 10% of UNC's football and basketball players couldn't read at a third grade level. UNC is now saying that, during the years she claims the data represents, 34 out of 341 football and basketball athletes were below that level.

UNC says, during those years, 34 out of 341 football and basketball athletes were below that level. So why the fuck is there any dispute? 34/341*100%=9.97%. Is that not between 8 and 10%? Did the UNC chancellor fail third grade math, too? What, exactly, are they refuting? The only possible angle I see is them saying "most of them graduated," which, basically, is the whole point, right? Students who read below a 4th grade level are getting bachelor's degrees. What am I missing here?

maybe UNC is saying that "meeting the threshold", as in, being able to read at a third-grade level, is all that you need in order to get a degree at Chapel Hill...
or maybe they are saying that the SAT is just a rogue testing agency and can't really be trusted.
or maybe they are saying that, since it's really just a vocabulary test, having the vocabulary skills of an 8-year-old is in no way correlated to your ability to read.

They are just numb to all the attacks. They now have no option but to deflect and deny. They've spent 3 years of effort and money trying to PR their way out of this. No reason to stop continuing it. Just keep taking the hits and hope the news cycle moves onto other things soon. They're just wanting to ensure this STD isn't terminal to their athletics program.
