UNC moves $2.3 Million from DEI to policing.

You know policing. Once of the major reasons DEI was created.

Looks like the Georgia election interference case is halted until possibly next year by the appeals court
https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/05/politics/georgia-trump-fani-willis-trial-delay/index.html

So far trump not seeing much change in the polls post felon

Paradoxically, trump, Biden, and Kennedy are all dropping in the most recent polls

And Kennedy is taking a bigger bite out of Biden when he’s included on surveys

Complete shitshow all around

The only silver lining is democrats have been over performing polls at the ballot box in recent elections

I realize this is kind of a stupid thing of me to say (like a lot of things on here )

I've always swung Democrat, but I'm kind of worried about it tipping over to one side

I guess that's the reason Republicans are anti-Democrat? just simply bc they don't want to see a 1-party thing going on?

I mean of course a lot of them are just stupid, obviously

but I sort of get it (or do I?)

like I don't think I would want a Democratic president from now until the end of Amurrica

is it just always that Republicans put up a stupid candidate? or is it really true that the left-wing media just fucking relentlessly bashes whoever it is?

again, don't get me wrong, o democratic TWWers, most likely I won't ever vote for a Republican unless Democrats manage to put up a completely retarded candidate

idk, I just sort of am seeing reasons why people are voting for Trump, even if they are convoluted

bc they don't want to vote for the other choice (who is good, but obviously could be better)

I feel like I won't ever figure any of it out for sure

plus, we don't know 99.9% of what's going on anyway, right? we can't predict moves of the president or congress or the judicial branch. so it mostly seems best to just stay out of it and let it happen, bc 1 vote clearly doesn't matter. you can say it matters all you want, but it looks like things are just going to play out how they're going to play out, with or without your input

did I get any portion of it right?

anyone want to come to my 5th birthday party?

also, how tf did I get into the soap box?

Ha I get what you’re saying. I think that thinking is basically what the average American thinks and definitely the swing voters

If you don’t follow the politics closely and spend a lot of time trying to draw historical analogs, you’re not going to necessarily feel the weight of things going catastrophically wrong if trump manages to destroy NATO.

You’ll just feel like you’re making a balanced equitable decision.

I mean, Republicans are anti-democrat because of policies and because they like being in charge. But you do raise an interesting issue, one I've sometimes suspected is the main culprit behind political polarization in the last few decades.

Republican candidates won the Presidency in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988 - every election but one during that period. The end of that streak in 1992 had two impacts, I think. One, Republicans had gotten a little too used to being in power, and had lost some of the willingness to compromise that comes with expecting a change in control every couple of terms.

Two, demographic change was accelerating in a way that wasn't favorable to Republicans. In 1790, about 81% of people in America were white, and just about everybody else was (a) black and (b) not really part of the political process. The white percentage actually went up over the next 150 years, peaking at just shy of 91% in 1940. Then it starts to decline, slowly at first, then accelerating from the 1970s onwards until you get to the 2020 census, when 61.6% of Americans were white.

So America is getting browner. And it's getting younger and better educated, since the Boomers convinced their kids to take student loans to get degrees. Now the boomers are all old as shit, or just dead, and their kids have liberal arts degrees and an axe to grind.

Yes, I think there are Republicans who saw these trends and realized that if things continued as they were, they'd be out of power forever. And indeed, Republican presidential candidates have only won the popular vote once since 1992. Faced with that kind of shift, you can adjust your policies to appeal to the new reality. Soften your stance on social issues, make sincere efforts to improve lives for minorities, reform immigration, that sort of thing. Or you can do what Republicans ended up doing, which is frantically try to rig the system.

I'm not too concerned about there being a one-party government in any permanent sense. In the United Kingdom, the Tories have been in power for 14 years, but it's now predicted that the next election there will swing largely back to the Labour party.

One issue with the Republican party is the level of anti-intellectualism that permeates its base. Two of the last four Republican presidents have been celebrities; the last Republican president had zero governing experience prior to being elected.

As opposed to the federal level, I'm more concerned with one-party rule at the state level, where a single party is more capable of gerrymandering and maintaining their continued hold on power - and this applies to both parties.

Oh, I was counting people like Rush and certainly Alex Jones as "his cronies."

There's plenty to be critical about with Newt--and in fact I've read statements by a number of Congressmen even from the GOP side who are critical of him--and I'm not saying he's the straightest shooter who ever stepped foot in Washington...but he's not on the level of either of those other 2.

Chauvin is in prison foru murder 2 under a state conviction. The federal charges, which are being served concurrently, were for violating Floyd's civil rights.

Of course there's the theory that they want to cause protests, they'll deem those protests "illegal" and start arresting people, it will cause more protests and potential riots, they'll declare martial law and suspend elections....

Sure, but will people really protest over Chauvin being pardoned for his federal sentence? Don't get me wrong, that would be abhorrent, but at the end of the day, it wouldn't affect his total time in jail because of the state charges, at least that's my understanding.

Protesting if he got the state charges lifted, I would agree with 100%.

I guess under that theory it could be argued that they're just doing anything and everything they can to "own the libs" and cause anger to stir-up unrest. It's just one more thing.
