I have a phone interview with United Healthcare at 11am today. I'm hoping that I can get an actual interview afterwards.

If you get that job, I would keep it quiet. All of the TWW liberals will want you dead.

I'm starting to get really frustrated with my job search. This past week I applied for two contract positions I was very well qualified for. Both the job requisitions were canceled later in the week.

yea, let me just tell you the number this does on her self esteem when people say that...

We've lived in three places in the last year (NC, NJ, VA) and she's got a license in all three (which is not cheap), applied in all three, and applied in other parts of the country. When applying to jobs, 99% of the time she gets an automated rejection within minutes. LOTS of hospitals are on hiring freezes. The ones that aren't don't give a shit about training new grads. Older nurses are staying in the workforce longer and some are even coming out of retirement after the economy went down the shitter.

This is a common thing. I've been reading nursing message boards and the theme is the same: people get out of school and apply hundreds of times. They're lucky if they get 1 or 2 interviews, but each opening is being hit by 500 applicants. Lots of people are going on 6 months or a year without a job. Most graduating classes only have a handful of students pick up jobs. And every semester the market is flooded with more. These nurses are moving across country (without jobs), in hope of finding a better market. This is like the fucking grapes of wrath.

And all I hear is that there a huge shortage. Well, the logical solution to a shortage is to FUCKING HIRE SOMEBODY. It's genius really. It's a good excuse for them to lure more students and drive down wages while still being understaffed.

I'm dead serious here. I thought we would be fine coming out of school; this has been a nightmare. I'm worried now that it's too late for her to ever get into the field. I would quit my job. I would move anywhere. I would fucking kill to just get her a job so she could get started.

Just accepted my first full-time job in my field. Graduated in May, been working through Temporary Solutions since July.

I had applied to the company back in April/May time period for a completely different position. They pulled up my resume for an analytical chemistry testing position, cold-called me for a phone interview (kinda unnerving - didn't expect it, didn't know what the job was for until they told me over the phone). Got an email a few days later, wanted to ship me up to Chicago for on-site interviews for a completely different position that wasn't even advertised - in the textile testing. Had the offer about five days later. Did a bit of counter-offering, they met what I wanted, so to the windy city I go!

(so nervous/excited. start Jan 4, still finishing up my two weeks at the temp job.)

fingers crossed on this one

i don't want to jinx it but it looks like i could be both an adjunct professor AND a government contractor up in Northern Virginia... both very good possibilities right now.

potentially life-changing, but i'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.

Uh, it doesn't really compare with the other concerns here, but I think I landed a job with the Undergraduate Tutorial Center (well, the Speech & Writing Tutorial Center) and I'm still running my own editorial services on the side--so, we'll see where that goes.

I honestly have no idea how to get my foot in the door on anything in this city. Thinking about starting early on Lulu Publishing or something.

I officially left this list on Nov. 9 after 5.5 months of unemployment. I encourage those who are still unemployed to work their connections with friends because I would probably still be jobless from applying to stuff just myself.

I just graduated so I'm officially unemployed!!!

I have no plans except to take the GRE eventually, try to find some kind of work, and otherwise volunteer my ass off--basically, what I should have been doing while I was in school.

My biggest barrier to even minimum wage employment is having absolutely no references since I've never done anything worth vouching for.

So now I gotta do something worth vouching for. Holla at me if you need a volunteer!

Bridget, congratulations on graduating! Even if you don't have any work or volunteer references, you can really play up your school career. #1 way to get a job is to have the confidence! (plenty of people who don't have any experience get awesome jobs because of this!)

The census job link I posted up above?

I got hired as a recruiter. We are prohibited from even doing things like 'need a job? [website]' on facebook and twitter and craigslist and such, so...this is about the only post I'll make about this. I can't go publicly posting hardly any info, but via PM, I am happy to answer questions that you can't resolve on your own by going to their website.

The big concern over trying to use craigslist/facebook/etc for recruiting is they're all paranoid that somehow, something will be misrepresented or misconstrued by applicants and then they'll cause a big headache for the local office, so no one is allowed to use those avenues for getting word out about the jobs. Of course, once you get to the level/office where they'd trust the people to put out "approved" listings...they can't be bothered.

And yes, there are problems filling these positions - some districts much more than others. Some districts are fully recruited already.

I know the feeling. I had a very difficult time finding a teaching position. As did all my teacher friends.

Jobs are hard to come by-- especially the government-related jobs that everyone assumes are easy to snag.

Yeah, gov jobs are tough to get and when you do get them they start you at a low salary and you have to work your way up...it is ideal for a college student that does not have much experience. I started almost 5 years ago and have over doubled my initial salary. Now I am looking at other Agencies for further advancement (New Year's resolution).

Bump to the top. First offer came told via phone today from one of my earlier interviews, awaiting paperwork to see if it's worth it. Another interview this week and next. Deciding if shorter hours and a decent pay cut (~15%) is worth coming back to Raleigh and jumping ship. Really holding out for either A) job I interview for this week or B) one that should be getting back to me within next week and a half (hopefully..).

Hopefully the new year will bring everyone else new opportunities now that companies hopefully have their budgets.

My experience is that a .gov job isn't that hard to get. And the benefits are more or less comparable to my last job at a private company where I had 6 years experience.

Still unemployed myself.

I've been in talks with the Fox station in Albany, GA about a meteorologist position for their new morning show starting in February. The chief meteorologist really likes my tapes, and he is fighting hard with the news director to get me an interview. I should have an idea about that one in the next few days.

I've still been looking for jobs with private forecasting firms and even as a middle/high school science teacher.

I'm back unemployed again as of Monday. My job ended last Thursday as my group was laid off. We found out at the end of October. I was worried knowing that November and December was the worst time to look for a job. Fortunately, I got 2 interviews but no offer from either
I'm on my 3rd day unemployed waiting the call. I got something possibly at Bayer but who knows if that will happen.

^sorry to hear that, man. At least you got an interview so there is slight hope.

I just got laid off yesterday and have no clue what to do...I know one thing for sure, I need to update my resume and start cranking out those cover letters.

any updates?

I talked to Ranstad staffing last week. Their is a project going on at Wells Fargo for Mortgage Processing. About 300 people contract for various positions through several different agencies. It's expected to last about 6 months. I'm still waiting to hear back.

Just saw this on WRAL. Garmin is opening an R&D Facility in RTP and will have up to 40 engineer positions open. They are hosting a job fair this Thursday at the Hilton by the airport from 2-8pm.

My last day of work is this Friday, but I was lucky enough to find a job in the Raleigh area. Sure beats Franklin, Virginia. So I will be on this list for a week before taking my new position in February. For those who've been out of work for a while, I suggest calling your friends you graduated with and see if they know anything, that's how I got 6 interviews. I did the churn out 15+ resumes a day and only got 2 hits on those, ones with a connection I was 5/6 in getting an interview and eventually got the one offer.

Good luck to all.
