I just had one of the data entry ladies ask me if this installation disc would just pop in and run the program automatically.

I think I overheard one of them the other day thank one of my co-workers for helping her change her desktop background.

I shipped my old desktop to my sister without realizing that if it's upright, the CPU heatsink/fan assembly is likely to shear off

I am really hating my tech support. Had to call 3 times, to get a case opened to get a damn mailing address that I needed 4 hrs ago for a part that broke.

Getting a second (different group) case opened for ordering the replacement was easy, even though id never done it before.

Wishing I had a good stiff drink right now.

Our marketing department sends out PDF files with new product announcements to our distributors and sales people. One of the sales guys calls in and asks if I can send it to him in "mb" format. I ask what he means by "mb" and he says "You know... megabytes!"

Supposedly, in large part to that article, Apple is now sending users a free upgrade to Leopard if they call Applecare and give the serial number of the device they are trying to hook up to a pre 10.5 system.

Talk about the squeaky wheel getting all the oil...

^^ In the author's defense, a 4 year old computer should be sufficient for a task that ultimately amounts to copying files from one place to another.

^^Here's an article that's in direct response to that one that takes a decidedly pro-Apple stance on the matter. I can see it from both sides of the argument. You can't expect your manufacturer to give you free upgrades forever (although, now it looks like they are) but I do think 4 years is a little bit on the low side of things when it comes to OS support.

^Apples and oranges Windows, my friend.

I think its a fair argument. I can install the newest iTunes on an XP machine I bought 7 years ago, if i wanted....

Yeah, I suppose if only 6% of the installed base is still running Tiger, then you're probably SOL.

And of those 6%, probably 80% or more won't have the first clue what an iPod even looks like.

my six year old Powerbook G4 still runs like a champ. it does seem stupid that I can't upgrade itunes when a comparable PC could, but lucky for me my ipod is also old so it still works.

Leopard runs on a G4 doesn't it? I thought they didn't drop PowerPC support until 10.6.

At least now you know if you decide to upgrade your iPod, you can get a free OS X upgrade for your laptop.

One of these days I'm going to build a computer without having to install the OS a second time because I screwed something up. By the way, I think it should be more widely publicized that you can't switch from AHCI to RAID mode on the HDD controller after the OS is installed on Intel chipsets.

two blue collar looking individuals on the Metro yesterday afternoon were talking and one said "you got a PC at home?" and the other said "naw, i got a laptop"

i suppose in some circles the PC connotes just a tower type of machine, but still....

The sales people at my company insisted on using Macbook Pros and we're still on Exchange 2003 and so IT had to install Parallels on each computer just to run Office 2010 (newer Office for OSX is not compatible with Exchange 2003).

So now all the sales people run Parallels JUST to use Outlook with our exchange server.

I just talked to 2 of them the other day and they weren't taught how to transfer files back and forth between the virtual machine and OSX so they've resorted to permanently plugging in a USB thumb drive and saving files to that in OSX then when they need to email attachments via Outlook on the virtual machine they attach them from the thumb drive.

haha, we have the same problem. we're on exchange '03, and about a third of the company is on Macs now. Even assuming office '08 or before, entourage is the shittiest email client in existence.

I think we're getting exchange '07 in a few months so it won't be a problem much longer, but fuck.

Yeah Entourage sucks ass. There's compatibility issues with exchange 2003 to the point where we can't even use the calendar because Entourage screws up all the events.

It's just the wifi password to get wireless for the media room. It's not like its a classified wifi with sensitive documents flowing through it.

Shit, I know the wifi password for the RBC center and they still haven't changed that in years. They only put a password so that dickheads in the seats don't use the bandwidth specifically made for the media and journalists. Although they only put the password on during big events.

Mother thinks the tv remote (TWC) is broken... calls me.

Ask her what happens when she pushes any button, she says nothing.

Ask her if the batteries are dead, she says that she just put new ones in.

Ask her again what happens when she pushes a button, this time specifying that she look at what light turns red at the top.

She says it is the auxiliary light. I tell her to push the tv button.

Fixed.

Lady brought in 13 floppy disks for us to convert over to a flash drive. Comes back in 2 days later flipping that the library computers won't open her files. Try to open them up and nothing can. Ask her how old they are. 1990/1991 works files. Dates show 2090 and 2091 for date of creation because of poor date coding(Y2K). I wasn't a tech when the last version of software able to open these files was sold. I didn't even have a computer.

My Dad this weekend.....

1st email:

"Got a new printer today and have spent the last 4 hours trying to get it to work. Set up HP Photosmart 5510 e, loaded ink even had it copy something--however when I loaded the disc that came with it to put in the software I keep getting -"can't find driver" fault. This is a USB set up. My Windows 7 is supposed to find the driver and set up the new printer. Have followed all the trouble shooting steps --still nothing.

Can you help me with this? Let me know please. Thanks, Dad

"CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that the higher resolution Retina displays of the new iPad and forthcoming Macbook Pro computers would increase consumption of network bandwidth, thus slowing performance of corporate networks. Higher resolution screens do not in and of themselves consume more network bandwidth. Some analysts have suggested that owners of devices with high-resolution screens will likely consume more video and HD video, which would result in higher bandwidth consumption. This article has been substantially recast to reflect this change."

Apparently, I am the only one in my office that is capable of NOT getting a virus. Online gaming, infected torrents, etc...

I just hope these idiots don't start using my computer (OR THE SERVER) since their computers are all out of commission

This is another case where the user is not at fault. It's just a shitty remote design. Remotes are terrible.

"Tech savvy" people just put up with shitty designs so they can use them as nerd tests. No one else cares to jump through the hoops imposed by terrible design.
