You know Kane is sitting on information and waiting to see if Martin reports on it.

Martin needs to produce a real report or Kane will rip him to sheds.

Quote :
"This week, the university’s accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, said it would review UNC-CH’s handling of the academic irregularities in the African and Afro-American Studies department"

Let's see what a truly independent (hopefully) review reveals

Honest question. Any chance that UNC could have bought the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission over?

Just came here to post this report is BS. why is a whole department that has a ton of athletes in it not a athletic issue. "oh this is only an academic problem" no shit, fake classes (academic) to keep players eligible (athletic).

we all knew that the real stuff wont come out till Dan Kane gets down and dirty with the report.

So the Navy course had grade inflation, but that was pretty normal and fashionable at UNC? Got it

And the reason they had 6 basketball players in there in one semester was because the progessor believed they would not put graffiti on the walls LOL

Martin was paid off, there's no other way. This is such bullshit.

He's not even touching on points like #8 where grades are already known to have been changed (professors came out and said so). He just says no grades were changed and move on to #9.

He claims that fraternities keeping records of the easiest professors and "anomalous classes" is no different than rateaprofessor.com.

He claims that 30+% athlete enrollment in a class is nothing to be concerned about. Simple statistical tests, which of course weren't used, would clearly give p-values of less than .001 if you compared the student body's non-athlete to athlete enrollment ratio for these classes against other department's classes.

He claims basketball athletes weren't involved anywhere.

The naval course was not inappropriately taught although it handed out A's like candy.

If they had just come out and said what everyone already knows we might not have been happy but it could at least be considered believable. Instead it just comes off as a bigger coverup

of course it was detected, the advisers knew it and sent athletes to these courses. they would have seen this had the interviewed any of them instead of just using UNC comments.

The report wasn't all bad, some stats indicated that more shit is to come.

Quote :
"No-show classes and poorly managed independent studies within UNC-Chapel Hill’s African and Afro-American studies department stretch back at least to 1997, according to a report Thursday morning from a former North Carolina governor."

Quote :
" UNC officials reported that 54 lecture-style classes within the African studies department over the past four years never actually met and required only a paper turned in at the end of the semester. Their report also found that independent studies in the department were not properly tracked.

Martin’s report expanded that number substantially to 216."

Maybe something interesting is there but early indications are that the report seems to go back in time and say less than we actually know now instead of the same or more

That dude said no money seemed to change hands as a result of the fraud (making financial implications seem inappropriate) but we already know Nyang'oro got paid tens of thousands of dollars to teach summer courses that didn't actually meet.

Nah, brah. A statistical review of the data just lying around is plenty good to draw conclusions about the situation.

edit: for instance, a statistical review of student athletes who were kept eligible by this practice of forging and changing grades and offering fake classes would be an interesting exercise.

Did anyone really expect anything other than this bullshit? I gave up on the thought of them getting anything than a slap on the wrist a long time ago. The best we can do now is make fun of anyone who has a degree from there for being obviously phony in hopes that enough of them get so pissed they stop donating to a school that has ruined their reputation.

^^I seriously doubt this scandal has affected UNC alumni job prospects, especially if they already have positions and references. It might affect a few current students in the Afro-American studies department but what are their job prospects anyway?

So they didn't interview anyone like Wiley or Nyang'oro and no current basketball staff or players. Then spent time talking about the difficulties of being a student athlete and threw AFAM/football under the bus? Good job, good effort guys.

"Today the University received the two independent, outside reviews that we commissioned in response to the academic irregularities found in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies. I strongly encourage you to read both reports, posted at http://academicreview.unc.edu/ and covered on the University's homepage, http://www.unc.edu.

The review conducted by former North Carolina Governor James Martin, also a former professor at Davidson College, was independent, objective and thorough. We cooperated fully.

His findings are sobering: The irregularities in the department date back to 1997.

Governor Martin confirmed that there were no problems in other departments in the University, and that only the two individuals we had previously identified in the African and Afro-American Studies department were implicated.

Governor Martin was assisted in his review by Baker Tilly, a management consulting firm with extensive national experience in academic performance procedures and controls. In a second report, Baker Tilly reviewed and validated the many improvements we have put in place to ensure that we never face problems like this again.

This is an important day for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For years, we've been proud that we did things the right way. We probably took too much for granted. We became complacent, and we made some mistakes. We acknowledge that. Now we have to get better.

We are embracing these findings, and we are moving forward as a much stronger university. I hope that ultimately we will be judged not only by what happened but by what we're doing about it.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp

I love that they didn't interview either of the people they place all the blame on. Nor did they actually bother to ask important questions like, "were those in the academic support programs for athletes steering athletes towards those classes?"

Fine job digging into absolutely nothing and not asking the questions that needed to be asked or really even investigating the issues at hand.
