I refuse to believe that even the most hardline Tea Partier would be willing to nominate a man who could be embarrassed by Dan Savage.

It's not only him, every GOP candidate except Paul is advocating increased aggression towards Iran. A war with Iran is almost inevitable if a Republican nominee wins the election.

The trouble with my uncle, Rick Santorum

Quote :
"If you want another big-government politician who supports the status quo to run our country, you should vote for my uncle, Rick Santorum. America is based on a strong belief in individual liberty. My uncle’s interventionist policies, both domestic and foreign, stem from his irrational fear of freedom not working.

It is not the government’s job to dictate to individuals how they must live. The Constitution was designed to protect individual liberty. My Uncle Rick cannot fathom a society in which people cooperate and work with each other freely. When Republicans were spending so much money under President Bush, my uncle was right there along with them as a senator. The reason we have so much debt is not only because of Democrats, but also because of big-spending Republicans like my Uncle Rick.

It is because of this inability of status quo politicians to recognize the importance of our individual liberties that I have been drawn to Ron Paul. Unlike my uncle, he does not believe that the American people are incapable of forming decisions. He believes that an individual is more powerful than any group (a notion our founding fathers also believed in).

Another important reason I support Ron Paul is his position on foreign policy. He is the only candidate willing to bring our troops home, not only from the Middle East, but from around the world.

Ron Paul seems to be the only candidate trying to win the election for a reason other than simply winning the election.

This year, I’ll vote for an honest change in our government. I’ll vote for real hope. I’ll vote for a real leader. This year, I will vote for Ron Paul."

This. Rick Santorum is an anti-science, homophobic, hate monger. Ron Paul is just an eccentric old man. He is basically Ron Swanson, only Ron Swanson is comic relief and Paul is dead serious.

Santorum is done.

Not only is he a horrible person and candidate but he has no money, no good ideas, and no one outside of the Midwest cares who their preacher gets paid to tell them to vote for

Santorum wins Iowa the same reason Huckabee won. He's simply too much of a socially conservative nut to win in the other big states. I don't see him turning this into a multi-state victory.

^^hear hear, in fact all of the primaries and caucuses before April (except for SC and FL) are proportional, and many of the contests after March are proportional too even though they weren't in 2008

Interestingly, if this year's rules had held in 2008, Romney would have ended up with a clear lead by the end of Super Tuesday, although not enough to convince McCain or Huckabee to exit the race.

It's more complicated than that.
Quote :
"In 2008, some precincts used a show of hands [11] or preprinted ballots.[12] The non-binding results are tabulated and reported to the state party, which releases the results to the media. Delegates from the precinct caucuses go on to the county conventions, which choose delegates to the district conventions, which in turn selects delegates to the Iowa State Convention. Thus, it is the Republican Iowa State Convention, not the precinct caucuses, which selects the ultimate delegates from Iowa to the Republican National Convention. All delegates are officially unbound from the results of the precinct caucus, although media organizations either estimate delegate numbers by estimating county convention results or simply divide them proportionally."

Delegates from the precinct caucuses are elected after the regular caucus vote, and only people who know the process hang around to do that. You can conceivably lose the state badly, but win most of the delegates if your people hang around and know what to do.

Don't worry, I bet Santorum will go the way of all his Republican primary predecessors: when they throw back the curtains to see what's inside, his campaign will burst into flames upon contact with sunlight. Like Bachman, Perry, Cain and Gingrich.

This article hinges on some pretty wishful thinking, namely that delegates might change their votes. While certainly possible, it happens very, very rarely.

edit: Actually, nevermind, why fucking bother. Ron Paul fans literally believe their candidate stands a chance of getting the votes of the 45%+ of Republicans whose current favorite is either Perry, Newt, or Santorum, plus that 25%+ who go for the more moderate Romney. If you can believe that a Santorum/Perry/Newt voter might suddenly find Ron Paul appealing, you can believe anything, so what's the hope of trying to inject any kind of reality into discussions of Paul and his campaign.

That's not what it hinges on at all.

Precinct delegates are elected after the precinct caucuses are held. These delegates elect folks to send to the county conventions. The county conventions elect folks to send to the state convention. And the state convention votes for people to send to the national convention. They are not awarded proportionally.

When the media reports delegate numbers from Iowa, they are pulling a number out of their asses completely arbitrarily.

Ron Paul won FAR more than his fair share of precinct delegates. Down the line, that will mean he will get far more national delegates than the very large straw poll vote results everyone is reporting.

The vote result everyone cares about literally has no more impact on anything than the Ames Straw Poll, except the perception of its mandate. That's important for future states and media coverage, but does nothing for IA delegates.

Another Santorum gem:

“One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country.” And also, “Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s okay, contraception is okay. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”
