Is it worth it to put down post emergent weed killer before over seeding this fall, or just let time and temperature do their thing to broadleaf weeds?

Related- what pre and post emergent weed killer (if any) do you guys with kids and dogs use? Most of what I’ve found says to stay off until it is watered in and then dry.

if you have a bunch i would probably use post emergent to help kill the weeds and make it easier to remove them. That way your new seed isn't battling for space to grow against dormant weeds.

I use professional grade products from Domyown.com. SpeedZone is great for most broadleaf weeds in a broad application. If you have a ton of established crabgrass I recommend Prime Source Quinclorac 1.5L. Pricey, but will absolutely wipe out the crabgrass and it's safe for Fescue.

You totally missed the window for post emergent. Your time to do that is in the heat of the summer. Things that crab grass have already shit seeds all over your yard and will come up next year.

i just did another round of post emergent for crab grass that had gone crazy in the past few weeks rain, it's all yellow and dead now. i wanted as much of it dead before i aerated and seeded, i'll still do a pre-emergent application next season but i feel like i'll have better results this fall than if i had tried to overseed with dense crabgrass patches.

my fescue is doing really well in the shaded backyard and just starting to come up now in the sunnier part of the yard. increased my watering a bit in the sunny parts of the yard and so far everything is looking good. just a couple more hot days to get through and so far it looks like i timed my seeding okay.

First mowing on the new lawn, kept it at a little under 4". Still happy with my timing, I think it worked out okay I just had to water twice a day during those first couple hot weeks. I slit seeded and think it made a big difference in regards to staying moist for germination. The areas that I didnt water are now coming up and looking really good.

Neighbor waited till things got cool using the and just did his last week using the same seed, so it will be an interesting comparison next soring and summer to see if the timing made a difference.

Oxalis is trying to come back, I thought I had eradicated it. Did spot treatment, I'll use the hose attachment lawn spray again if that doesnt get it all.

I seeded 2 weeks ago, grass is popping up now. It was nice I didn't have to water half the days, but I have all 12 sprinklers setup for twice a day automatic watering.

Grass it getting pretty long, but I am going to try and wait at least until next weekend before doing my first mowing.

I am having similar good results from my reseed. The overcast days, milder temps, and consistent rain over the last couple weeks have helped. I blew off the top layer of my straw to help the growth. I had a couple bare spots that were suffocated by matted straw/heavy leaves that i'll need to spot seed but for the most part everything is coming in nicely.

^yeah, i was looking at pictures of my backyard from April and i had this lush, deep green fescue carpet. Fast forward to September and it was a bare, dry plot of dirt.



Is there a better to get the matted straw up off the yard? I tried to spread it extra light so it wouldn't get wet and create these heavy wet patches but, alas, i have them. Its one of the main reasons i hate straw.

I always felt like mowing got the straw up, not sure if that is what you are asking.

I stopped using straw and just sprinkle topsoil on top of bare spots now.

I've got like 10lb of centipede seed so far (can return nbd)...not too big of a shitty yard i'm trying to make less shitty. I would like to spend more now on seed to ensure fast coverage/adoption. Will this centipede kill my shitty fescue? That would be a nice bonus. Lawn is something on the order of 3200-3500 square feet.

How much seed should I put down? Was thinking of throwing down a little topsoil and/or a thin layer of peat moss in an attempt to keep the seed wet for...a month? I have to keep this shit wet for a month?!?!?!

So basically am I going in the right direction to finally rid myself of the great money drain and frustration that is fescue?

Leaning bermuda atm because it sounds so fucking aggressive and thus will kill off the shitty fescue much quicker.

I can deal with a little more maintenance to accomplish that goal.

im in zebulon and i have centipede. It needs a fuckton of water to get going. It turns green usually later in the spring but once it gets going, its pretty strong and tough. It's usually the last grass that goes dormant in the fall as well. My only complaint is mine hasn't taken over like I thought. I had put down some rye grass in some bare spots a few years ago just to fill and thinking the centepede would take it over but it never did.

If you want to get bermuda out of centipede, you can spray sethoxydim, so that's always an option if it does begin to encroach.

I had crazy weeds and I roundup'd my entire lawn last year just before summer. Should have waited a bit, but it worked out. Killed everything scorched earth. Literally had a dirt field all summer. (Good thing I'm ON the HOA ) In the fall I put down a little topsoil, seed, fert, lime, etc. Watered like crazy and it's freaking imaculate right now. Hoping it survives the summer. I may water a little extra this year.

Because it does You cannot beat the look of a healthy fescue lawn when it's at its best. I have a love/hate with fescue for sure, but I will never have a different grass. Once it's established and thick, it's honestly not that hard to maintain. Mow high. Water when needed. I had perfect fescue at my previous house and maintained it for several years before moving 2 years ago and starting to get this new lawn in shape.

I'm usually able to maintain a nice cool season lawn (kentucky bluegrass/fescue mix) until around July 4th. That's when the real heat and humidity start to take a toll. I would recommend starting a fungicide regimen around June(or earlier) as a preventative measure. I usually alternate between DiseaseEx and the Bayer Advanced every 4-6 weeks.
