If it snows it will stick. The temps aren't the issue. The question is how much it will snow

Soil temp is around 40 now. With a low of 25 tonight and high of 29 tomorrow I don't think ground temperature is going to be an issue.

they were forecasting 1"/hr on the winter storm warning, that's definitely fast enough to stick even if the ground is a little warm.

what time is this supposed to start? i don't want to get stuck at work.

Nobody will want to be stuck at work so the roads are gonna be jammed early. Leave even earlier than you think you need to. And don't go near the highway until you know it's still moving.

Addicts of all kinds should plan accordingly. I assume people buy bread and milk to make the two cases of beer a little less obvious.

I buy bread because there's plenty meals/snacks that can be made if snowed in. Milk because of tea/coffee and cereal.

Use waze gps app to find least crowded route home. Park facing the rising sun. Plan extra commute time to brush snow from your car.

I have a 2pm meeting

And I have a long car with an open diff and wide, fairly smooth summer performance tires. I'm fucked if it gets slick.

I'm also not in the mood for snow. I can't be sitting around at the house. This time of year blows, and we gotta keep it moving.

I love driving around in the snow, except for those idiots who fly around me and tailgate.

Yes snow tires are epic. Even compared to regular all-season tires. You've got way better traction, can stop faster on ice, and handling just feels better in general.

Although I'd take a set of these any day:

I honestly expected an early release across the county, but I can understand not wanting to deal with the logistics of that

The last time there was significant snow (~Jan30, 2010) I got on a bus that then tried to go up the tiny hill that feeds into Yarborough at Dan Allen, and the bus slide back down the hill almost out into the intersection. Good fucking luck with buses that can't make it up even that in ice.

We are good. NWS is conservative with 2-4".

My bet would be 4-6" in Raleigh (higher number the more east).

I'm working from home after 2ish just because I don't trust other people.

Apparently the atmosphere is dryer than expected. Expect half the precip to evaporate before it makes it to ground

should we be worried about dry air at 850 in the 12Z GSO sounding? Is that what causes virga (which is a term I just learned)?

I'm supposed to have a site visit in Durham at 3pm. I'm banking on not going due to the weather starting to get shitty around then, so dont you DARE start with this "evaporation" talk

I'm not going to even begin to pretend to understand why but I gather we will lose some precip to virga which is why NWS scaled back to 2-4" of real accumulation at RDU

ugh. 2 meetings today; 3 tomorrow. someone doesn't believe in weather forecasting

I'm not worried about me and my vehicle driving in snow. However, as it often happens in NC, I wouldn't be surprised to see a thin layer of ice on the roads, under the snow. Even if that doesn't happen, my car (AWD) can handle a few inches of snow. What I don't want to do is have a 3 hour commute because idiots fuck shit up.

Won't be ice.

It's way too cold already for that. Any snow wil be light and fluffy. A rare treat here..

^^pretty sure he just meant the sticking snow would form ice on the roads...

not that ice would be falling from the sky

the guy from the weather channel just said as much...

^thank you. latent heat + vehicle traffic + brine often equals liquid water. Add cold temps + falling snow often equals layer of ice.

^^flawed argument. Not gonna be cold enough for that to turn to ice till later tonight, when ambient temps fall below 20°F. Also AWD doesn't do shit to help you turn or stop.

Durham is further west so the precip won't start there till even later, probably 4ish. Don't bitch out

^^^your argument is flawed as well since it's moving in from the southwest...

it may hit durham later because it's further north...but it would possibly hit it sooner being further west...

it's already all over the triad
