Got a new cable box today. It didn't work -- seemed to be getting stuck during the initial boot process -- so I called TWC and they told me to drive back and switch it for another box. I did, and had the same problem. Frustrated, I called TWC again and was told that they'll need to send out a tech, and the earliest available appointment would be 7:30pm tomorrow. I ragequit the conversation with the CSR and went back to my box. Turns out I had the coax input and output reversed.

Well it's definitely Christmas. The time of year to do the rounds and provide tech support at every location I visit. At least a face to face gives me a chance to create a quick translation guide for those random terms that get thrown around in phone calls leading up to the visit. The translation guide is fairly short though. So far I've gleaned:Hard drive = the entire computer case and all of its contentsVista Excel = the OS
12/8/2010 2:28:29 PM
lol but it sounds about right.

Our company ordered us nice new dell 22" 1080p monitors. Just realized my 2 co-workers had been running them at the native resolution of their laptops (1280 by 800) for 2+ months.

If my Dad knew I was posting this he would kill me. I immediately thought of this thread when I read his email. There so many lulz I crack a smile every time I read it.
12/13/2010 4:30:09 PM
what is your dad going to do with 750,000 ram
12/13/2010 4:32:42 PM
I guess process the 6 MG of data that he has.

In 20 years, none of us will give a flying fuck about calling shit by their correct names.

tell that to RICHARD MOTHERFUCKING STALLMAN

My mom wanted a laptop (she's never had one before). For some reason she thinks that ebay is God's gift to earth and that you can't find a better price anywhere, even though she regularly buys used things for more the same or more than she can get a new one. Anyway, instead of consulting me about what she should get, she bought a piece of shit, several year old Dell Laptop with Windows ME on it for $200. I told her she should have bought a netbook, but she thinks that because they're small, they don't do as much (all she really does is browse the internet).
12/29/2010 3:46:28 AM
lol she'll be pissed when she learns many of her favorite programs don't work on ME
12/29/2010 3:52:37 AM
^^facepalm
12/29/2010 7:27:13 AM
^^ Nah, IE 4 will work
12/29/2010 11:19:24 AM
1/29/2011 11:42:52 AM
^^ME comes with IE5.5, but she should upgrade to IE6 SP1and also install KernelEx and get the latest Firefox and just use that shit
1/29/2011 11:21:00 PM
^^Ha. There are a lot of people even now that would have a similar discussion about the internet and e-mail addresses. The key difference is back then those kinds of people didn't have access to a computer and now they do.We call those people relatives and we format and reinstall the OS on their computers for them every Christmas. I was this close to investing in a ghost license for one particularly pesky case."What's this? I never use the WINDOWS folder?"Explanation given basically amounting to DO NOT TOUCHa week later"Well, I erased the WINDOWS folder..."

I did a fashion shoot this weekend and one of the models, who happens to be very beautiful and 18, was worried about something trivial in the background. I basically replied with "Don't worry about it, it's called photoshop". Then after getting the "eureka" moment and saying "oh I didn't know you could fix that". My creative director enters the room and she responds "yeah, it's called photoshop" unaware I said the exact same comment 10 seconds before.

Oh man I have a good one. My friend just got a PR job and she said when the office makes press releases they print out the documents and scan them manually one at a time in the scanner then combine them back into a PDF on the computer.

RE: your resolution post. I would see that all the time out in the wild when I was with my old employer. At first when I would notice it I would just change it to the native res, but then the customer would end up bitching about it being 'too small' and 'hard to see' so I started leaving their pixelated goodness alone. Somewhat ironically, a good deal of this occurred in various vision/eye care offices.
2/24/2011 10:17:26 AM
^^ LOL i could see a lot of people doing that.

Similar story: While doing a software automation project for a company, I was interacting with their software developers who wanted the automation. Since they wouldn't allow me on to their network to use their internal website that was being automated, I asked them to send me screen captures of some working examples so I could replicate the use-cases.So the software developer in question printed the internal website, scanned it back, and emailed the PDF.Nice.

I am amazed at how many people don't know what this button does:
2/24/2011 2:54:37 PM
When I first saw that key I thought it was a vestigial holdover from the IBM-PC, something that if pressed would send the contents of the screen to the printer.
2/24/2011 10:05:40 PM
uhh...that's exactly what it was used for.
2/24/2011 10:31:13 PM
but the thout never crossed my mind that it would later be used to take a screenshot and put it in the clipboard
2/24/2011 10:39:18 PM
I would donate money to a paypal account that was used to fund a bribe for you to stop posting on TWW.
2/24/2011 10:49:48 PM
I'm with lewisje. Why the fuck don't they just change the key to say "screenshot"? It's unintuitive, otherwise. I don't blame people for not knowing what it does. I don't use scroll lock or pause/break, either.

This was the first page of an invoice I received. Please note that this is ALREADY IN A PDF.

I have to call myself out. I recently rebuilt my computer and it took me 3 weeks to notice that the RAM stick in slot 3 was seated improperly and wasn't working. In my own defense, everything was working fine with just 3 GB working in single channel mode.
3/27/2011 7:48:31 PM
I'm not sure "poorly seated RAM in a computer I built myself" qualifies as technical ineptitude.
3/28/2011 9:07:48 AM
I'm sure somebody is willing to troll him for it
3/28/2011 9:23:17 AM
If you are comfortable opening the case, incorrectly seating a component is on the level of not checking whether the computer is plugged in.
