this was getting to close to the bottom.

"The records develop a deeper picture about the academic fraud that has spawned four ongoing investigations and reviews on the Chapel Hill campus. They show that the athlete support program used the no-show classes to help keep student-athletes eligible to play.

I love that one of the Swahili professors is so frustrated that some of the players can't "grasp the language." Is that any surprise, when we know that those players can barely read or write on a college level?

I read it as they are going to see why information UNC comes up with on their own before they do anything...

Yeah it doesn't sound like the NCAA is going to do any investigating...but they'll wait and see what comes of the internal investigation(s) I guess.

The fuck they are. That quote doesn't make me feel very good about the possibility of sanctions. Sounds like he's toeing the Carolina party line of them doing everything they can to get to the bottom of this. If it wasn't for Pack Pride and Dan Kane forcing their hand, this shit would've been over a long time ago. I'm not getting my hopes up.

likely sleeps like a champ. given precedence even if they did nail down their basketball program, which they won't since it's both a) a cash cow for all involved and b) a program with academic support totally separate from all other sports, he knows good and well he'll get a few million bucks in buy-out (hush) money if he has to "resign" and you know he has texa$ in the bank as it is. i wouldn't be all that worried about it either if i were already okay with being in that system to begin with.

I can't link from my iPad (easily) but a story just came out from the N&O that basketball players were steered toward some Naval weapons course because it only required like one term paper.

UNC's Naval Weapons Systems class attracted basketball players

to keep basketball grades up they are jeopardize our future naval officers knowledge. One of the naval officers will probably start WW3 just so hansblow could remain eligible

Quote :
"The class’s average grade that semester was 3.63, or better than a B-plus, and the class’ work requirements were deemed so difficult to assess that its structure was later changed."

Quote :
"The syllabus for the NAVS 302 class shows that it was a different type of course than in other years. It had no required exams or quizzes and no major research paper. Students received much of their grade from a two- to three-page double-spaced midterm paper and a group project that required a 20-minute oral presentation split among five students."

Quote :
"Since he took over the department, the weapons class average grade has plummeted to roughly a C average."

"One of the basketball players, Bobby Frasor, now director of basketball operations at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said he and his teammates took the class after the class instructor discussed it with counselors in the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes, a program that helps athletes stay eligible academically to play sports.

“He told our academic advisers, but I had never heard of the class, and basically, our academic adviser recommended it and we enrolled in it,” Frasor said. “And I don’t know if it was my favorite class, but it was an enjoyable class.”

I don't know how excited I would get over this. As a general rule, Naval Science courses are notoriously easy, as long as you do the work in them. Then again, they do usually have tests and quizzes and shit.

and if they are steered to a class that is normally easy, well, what's the problem? now, if they modified how this course is normally taught because they steered athletes to it, well, that's a different story. but rocks for jocks aint nothing new

There is easy, and then there is "one 2-page paper and one 4 minute* presentation for your entire grade" easy.

* 20 minutes split 5 ways

^^^ don't disagree, but now show that that one class, that one time, was made that way to benefit athletes, at the same time it was fucking over NROTC students by making them less prepared. I love a good conspiracy as much as the next guy, especially concerning UNC, but fucking with the military in order to win basketball games just sounds a little too far-fetched. N'yangoro fakes a class maybe he gets fired. A Navy LT fakes a class, and he goes to Leavenworth.

The original accusation was that student athletes were enrolled in bogus classes just so they could be handed a grade to remain academically eligible, a very real story. Carolina apologists then rebutted with a straw man arguing that all schools have easy courses for athletes, which wasn't even the original concern. Now the narrative has changed to "look at the athletes taking easy courses" which can easily be dismissed with a "so what."

The only thing from the article that stood out:

Quote :
"The syllabus for the NAVS 302 class shows that it was a different type of course than in other years."

For the semester where 30 of the 38 enrolled were athletes.

yeah, that's the only thing that would make me raise an eyebrow, but that could be chalked up to having a different LT teaching the class. Maybe he thought this would be a better format, and then promptly found out why it wasn't. Like I said, a Navy LT isn't gonna fake a class for athletes at the risk of going to Leavenworth. it's more likely that the athletic academic support saw this course's new format and pounced on it.

I think you give said Navy Lt. too much credit. Especially given the 'Carolina Way'. No doubt he thought if it was the best for UNC basketball, it would be best for the country.
