Thank you everyone for all the awesome recommendations and questions....really spent me thinking harder on this. We have decided to go with a Ruger American .270 vice the .243reasoning is still less than a .300, but better chance for her to put something down over the .243I am heading this afternoon to pick it up from my local shop. We will see how it goes tonight sighting it in.Season opens on Saturday, fingers crossed.

So I am trying to trade one of my AR's for a hunting rifle. I found a guy who is interesting in trading a Savage 110 + cash, anyone ever shoot one of those before? Thoughts in general? It would be in 30-06, I have never shot a rifle in that caliber so I have no idea about that either. Most shots would be under 200 yards but I would like to take a hunting trip out west at some point where I might need some more range.Thoughts?
11/14/2014 12:55:12 PM
They're good rifles. 30-06 is tried and true. If the money is right, do it.
11/14/2014 7:32:56 PM
I have a Savage 11; its an impressive rifle for the money.
11/16/2014 9:31:57 PM
^, ^^, ^^^Yeah I'm a big Savage fan. They make some of the absolute best shooters for the money, and have for a good while now. In fact, they probably make some of the best shooters, period, until you get into megabuck stuff..30-06 is as versatile of a cartridge as there is. If you're only going to have one rifle to hunt North America with, a Savage in a long-action caliber, and probably most especially .30-06, would be near the top of my list. 7mm REM mag would be another good do-it-all round, offering a little more speed/range/power at the expensive of beating you up a little more for the majority of the time when you don't need the extra oomph.^^^^ .270 is fine. If you're buying new and can pick your caliber, I'd still go with 7mm-08 or .260, though. They are both PLENTY for deer. A deer will never, ever know the difference between any of the 3, and the short action calibers will be just a little lighter recoiling and likely just a tick more accurate. If this is just for deer, or maybe a pig or something, go with the short action rounds unless you find a good deal on something else. It's splitting hairs, but why not get the best tool, all else being equal?Really, the only time I'd choose .270 over .260/7mm-08 is if I was hunting bigger stuff like elk or even black bear, and then I'd probably go with something bigger than .270 anyway (although .270 has killed a bunch of elk and probably most everything else short of the big bears and big African game).[Edited on November 17, 2014 at 1:54 PM. Reason : .270 is a great choice. I just think the other two are a little "greater" for your use.]

I was holding out for a 7mm-08, but got a steal on the same rifle in .308. Did me right on Saturday, nailed a 10 pointer in the afternoon.

Hiro, is that scope not on backwards? The silver ring on a Leupold is normally on the front and the windage turret is normally on the right.
12/25/2014 3:56:34 PM
Yup. In my haste to take a picture, I definitely put it on backwards. Don't worry, I had it pointed the right way before heading out to get it sighted in, but I was really hoping no one would notice and call me out on the picture Out of pure luck, the windage was dead on, but I had to really turn that elevation dial around to get it hit paper at 25 yards. After about 40 rounds, it'll hit pretty accurately. Using Russian Surplus, I'm getting a 2MOA grouping. I'm really happy with it. The 2.5x magnification is very helpful and the clarity and field of view through the scope is epic. This is my first scope, and I'm extremely pleased with it. Totally worth the $275 I paid for it with the performance increase it brings (7-8 MOA with iron sights, 3-4 MOA with the red dot, now 2-3 MOA with the scope). The rifle setup at $450. I'm not sure if there's a better bang for buck out there, especially with 7.62x54R being so cheap compared to similar cartridges.[Edited on December 25, 2014 at 8:01 PM. Reason : .]

Bought my first handgun last week. Glock 19 Gen 4. My wife and I decided that is what our Christmas gift would be to ourselves. Also got the biometric gun case since we have a kid. Haven't fired it yet but I've fired the 17 and liked it.

im in the market for a sub $300 red dot, and it would need to be suitable for a rail 4.25 inches long.looking at:redfield counterstrikebushnell trs-25lucid hd7...but open to other suggestions. its going on a mini 30 so it wont need a riser but has a bit less than AK level recoil if thats a consideration. some nikon models are fragile in this regard and suitable only for rimfire applications (for example).thanks!

Just got back from the coolest shooting range I have ever been to, the trip was a Christmas gift from my wife and I have never seen anything like it. Place is owned by Aimpoint, to start off we went in the basement where they had a 100 yard tunnel to sight in my gun. I took my AR-10 which was already pretty set but we still made a couple adjustments. The target system was all computerized so we didn't have to even mess with paper targets and it measured my groupings as well. Best was .66, much better than I thought my gun could do (was using hand loads).Next we did a deal where they teach you some marksmanship skills for moving targets using a projector and a fake gun (you point it at the screen and it records your shots). It was pretty neat to work on target acquisition this was and you could see how your barrel moved throughout the exercise before and after you pulled the trigger.Last, the coolest part is a 30 yard range where they have a big screen at the end and they put up all kinds of scenarios from deer trotting through a field, hogs running, a coke can that you shot up in the air and each shot kept it up more, to competition style shooting using target trees. The whole thing was computerized so you could see exactly where your shots hit and watch replays of everything. If I had known that was how it would have been I would have taken an AR-15 instead but they had a Noveske they let me borrow after I got tired of shooting my .308. I am definitely going to go back, if for nothing else to use the 100 yard tunnel, I can't think of a better way to dial in some hand loads. It is in Dallas so sorry for you NC people, if anyone comes down this way let me know though, would love to go again.

Video from the range mentioned above, wish I had gotten one with the hogs running but this one is still pretty cool and gives you an idea of what it was like. It kept score and you could go back and see exactly where each shot hit.https://www.flickr.com/gp/102306183@N05/wsENR5

The vortex strikefire isn't bad for the money.

What's the word about S&W M&P15? I'm looking at picking up at VTAC II for cheap.
12/30/2014 8:46:39 PM
They are fine but I wouldn't get one if I was going to spend $1200 on an AR. Right now you can get a BCM upper with a free BCG, there is a nice 16" mid length for $755 that has a KMR handguard on it. Slap that on a lower and you have a much nicer rifle than that M&P.
12/30/2014 9:04:58 PM
The S&W ARs are great range plinkers and light/medium duty guns. They are well made entry level, and I think $6-700 is an ok price.Any more than that and you are much better off spending a small amount more and going BCM.
12/30/2014 9:22:49 PM
even at the $700 mark, you can build a better rifle
12/30/2014 10:42:59 PM

You know, people want to feel safer - but then don't understand the logistics of actually having to retrieve the weapon in a life/death situation.

Girlfriend is looking for a good deal on a Sig P938. It's the only conceal carry 9mm that she's comfortable with. I'm having a hard time finding a good deal on one. We stumbled upon one used for $550 with holster and didn't think anything of it since they start at $620 new. That pistol sold before I could return to get it sicne I was gun store hopping. So the hunt is still on... Armslist isn't much help, but I figured I might get lucky asking for any leads here as I continue to watch CSC classifieds.[Edited on January 1, 2015 at 12:49 AM. They rarely sell used, but when they do, they are still near $600.That is because almost every shop sells at msrp, from $680-980 depending on model.

Recommendations for muzzleloader for deer hunting? Also crossbow or compound bow for deer...why, andrecommended brande/models¿
1/9/2015 11:07:03 PM
why are you adding archery equipment? is it to challenge yourself or simply lengthen your deer season and allow you go put more meat on the table? if you want a challenge, then a regular compound bow is more challenging. if you just want to lengthen your season, then go with a crossbow. you may also want to consider the laws in other states if you ever think you may go on a hunt out of state.i had to make this same decision when i got a bow. i ended up with a compound bow, which worked out well when a friend of mine invited me up to hunt a farm in West Virginia.
