I got my Creedmoor rifle back from Savage the other day. They replaced the bolt head and polished the chamber. I dialed the trigger down to a few ounces of pull weight, put the scope and bipod back on it, and took it to the range today.I ran about 80 rounds through it this afternoon. No more issues with blowing primers, and it was pretty consistently printing groups at 100 yard that will fit under a dime. Hornady Match factory loads (140 gr A-Max). Now I just need to clean it and my AR, haha. I'm looking forward to getting the chance to run it at the 1200 yard range in Crestview, FL now that it's repaired.I'm about to build a second garage...I'm gonna build some shelves and storage racks and stuff in there...I'm gonna have one dedicated area just to store my ammo stockpile. My safe only has 4 long guns and 3 pistols in it; the rest is stacked with ammo and tools/accessories.[Edited on June 7, 2014 at 10:55 PM. Reason : ]

I was able to shoot the suppressed SBR this weekend. All I can say is WOW.It is quiet. We were at a 25yard indoor range, and it was hearing safe when behind the gun.No idea about to the sides, but there were 3 of us + the range RO. After shooting with the ears on, we all took our ears off and took turns taking a few shots. It wasn't ninja stealth, but I would put it under the .22 that Hiro was shooting. The RO at the range said that I had just cost him $700, because now he needed to go buy one.

The Flintlock Valley range in Uwharrie is back open, its a nice range w/ stands and targets for $30 a year since I drive past it on 49 to CLT every couple weeks. However, the forward covers they built to keep from shooting over the berm sound literally like shooting down those corrugated pipes some ranges use. My normal plugs werent enough to keep my ears from hurting just from 9mm/223. Larger calibers are going to just be ridiculous without both plugs and earmuffs. Not a big fan of shutting down at 6 every day either when theres a good couple hours of light left, but theres not many rifle range options between Raleigh and CLT.

Cleaned mah firearms and reset the rear iron sight on the 22/45. i'm ready for another day!!!

sold my old beater Dodge truck today...dude couldn't come up with all the cash, so he made up the difference with a Norinco SKS and an Italian 6.5 Carcano.I figure if I can sell them for a total of $500, that'll get me to my full asking price on the truck. If I can make more, then great, if I make a little less, oh well. Some jackass painted the SKS stock gloss black, so it'll be a good rifle for someone who wants to refit either a polymer stock or a nice original wood (or aftermarket, i guess) stock. The Carcano, I want to learn more about. It's potentially old...according to Wiki, production was from 1891-1945. I don't think they're generally valuable at all, but I would consider keeping it just as a need piece of history. We'll see.[Edited on June 12, 2014 at 10:21 PM. Reason : my God, I had forgotten what an atrocious trigger an SKS has]
6/12/2014 10:20:56 PM
carcanos are pretty crappy
6/13/2014 7:09:40 AM
You might try pulling the metal out of the SKS and try some paint remover. Once clean, coat the stock in tongue oil, let it dry inthe hot sun, and then polish it with an old t shirt while watching 'Fargo' and it will look great. The Cacarno has an awkward bolt. Not sure if the ammo is unique, or 6.5 Swede.
6/13/2014 8:11:48 AM
it's tung oil. you can use Citristrip to remove the paint.and 6.5 carcano isn't the same as 6.5x55 swedish[Edited on June 13, 2014 at 9:31 AM. Reason : dfas]

If you're really into quick, dirty, potentially carcinogenic methods, oven cleaner also works really well for stripping wood.
6/13/2014 12:32:02 PM
what's carcinogenic about lye?
6/13/2014 1:54:29 PM
I finally got the stamp in on my SBR today; took 13 months but hopefully it will be worth the wait. I'm happy with the overall length of the 8" barrel with an SDN762 on the end, but unfortunately I won't have a chance to test out the setup until next week.I'd love to run both guns through a chronograph and see how much of a difference the missing 8" of barrel makes.
6/13/2014 10:45:16 PM
carcano was good enough for oswald
6/14/2014 11:18:20 PM
How is that weekend shooting outing shaping up drunktyper?
6/16/2014 11:18:58 AM
^ We are good to go on the morning/early afternoon of the 22nd. I just need to get a head count.
6/16/2014 2:18:35 PM
I'm in.Caravan from Raleigh, you PM an address?
6/16/2014 3:15:35 PM
I'm probably in. How far from Apex?
6/16/2014 8:12:48 PM
Damn. I'll be at the tail of the dragon I hope you boys have fun!
6/17/2014 12:18:59 AM
I'm in. I did my dragon riding weekend-before-last.

Who all is going Sunday? Does anyone have some steel targets we can shoot?
6/20/2014 5:21:13 PM
I'll be there, and probably bring a little bit of everything since I've got a bunch of stuff that I've barely used recently. All I have is paper targets, unfortunately, but I wish I had a couple nice plates.Obviously, anyone is free to try out anything I've got, and if you want to shoot it a whole bunch, just bring a box of ammo. If anyone has a .22 they want to run, but no ammo, I have a bulk box that I can share. Short list on hardware is:.22LR AR-15PSLSKSM1 GarandAn Enfield or two - got a new No5 carbine to run a few rounds through.GP100 & S&W 629
6/20/2014 5:56:24 PM
Just paper here as well.My list:Suppressed SBR AR16" light weight AR9mm Glock mag ARMossberg 590Glock 24Glock 23/35 RMR SuppressedSig 938TableBags
6/20/2014 6:35:29 PM
I will bring two steel squares. 12 x 12
6/21/2014 11:43:23 AM
anyone been to the range in north raleigh?trying to go sometime this week if its decent, if not recommend a better one.k thanks
6/21/2014 4:36:17 PM
Check out PDHSC off Tryon.
6/21/2014 5:20:31 PM
folks at pdhsc were typical gun shop douches when i wentjust go to goldsboro and shoot at ken edwards' range
6/21/2014 5:25:47 PM
You can try to get on with DPRC or A2. Both are good options but you will drive a little.
6/21/2014 5:39:03 PM
I'd prefer to stay in Raleigh since I'm taking people with me that live in the area...I've been by the one off tryon before...might look at reviews on it.Eagle 1 was the one I was referring to in North Raleigh.
6/21/2014 5:45:28 PM
got to put my SBR 300 blackout through the wringer this weekend at the Dare County range, and I'm very happy with it. it cycled flawlessly both suppressed/unsuppressed with subsonic and supersonic ammo. It was not much louder than a suppressed 22 when running suppressed subsonic ammo- all you heard was the action followed by the bullet thumping against the earth berm. unsuppressed on an 8" barrel sounded like a damn cannon going off though. not sure if the short barrel caused it, but there was a lot more blowback when I had the can on compared to other ARs. I ended up with powder covering my arm since I shoot left handed. hopefully installing a vertical grip to change my arm position will remedy the situation, but I've never used one so not sure if I'd like it.
6/22/2014 9:30:53 PM
MaximaDrvr also had a lot of gas coming from the ejection port. I guess its pressure from the gas in the can coming back through the barrel as the empty casing is ejected out. After a few rounds, it starts getting hard to breath when you are in a indoor shooting stall. [Edited on June 22, 2014 at 9:42 PM. Reason : .]
6/22/2014 9:41:59 PM
you always have a lot of blowback when running suppressed, but this was a lot more than usual. my arm practically turned black after about 60 rounds.
6/22/2014 9:44:13 PM
^^^^The range at PDHSC is nice if you're going to shoot handguns. Your experience with the staff is kind of a crap shoot depending on who is there. Some of them are really good, and some of them are really...not good.[Edited on June 23, 2014 at 8:21 AM. Reason : .]
6/23/2014 8:21:04 AM
Got my new build put together. Ended up with the new SLR 12" MLOK rail and I am really please with it, great piece.
6/23/2014 9:36:06 AM
Everyone who did not come out to drunktyper's land really missed out this weekend.I hope next time we can get a few more (though there were 12 of us there, just 4 from TWW) and shoot for a longer length of time.We had at least 15 stamps out there, and fun was had banging steel.
6/23/2014 9:36:10 AM
I would like to make it a longer day next time. I have a skeet thrower, so next time we should set up a few stations. I was thinking:Long DistanceSkeetPistolMedium Range for AR/AKWe just need to get a few things together...like more steel.I will also put some official shooting lanes in the woods so we don't have to be in the sun all day.
6/23/2014 2:31:25 PM
If anyone has a good local source for AR500 steel plates, I wouldn't mind picking up at least one, maybe two in 8" or 12" size.
6/23/2014 2:49:00 PM
Sounds like it was a good time. I would love to come to event like that, I just don't have any cool toys to bring.
6/23/2014 5:32:39 PM
I will make it a point not to be in the mountains the next time sometime like this goes down. It'll give me incentive to buy some steel trees so we can play games or setup some kind of fun shooting match.
6/23/2014 7:38:09 PM
^^Bringing toys was not a requirement. Just be prepared to bring ammo or buy some. Ammo can get expensive. If we have a few people whom would like to learn or get acquainted to shooting, I would be happy to dedicate an hour or two to an introduction into shooting. Gun Basics, Safety Protocols, How to Handle...etc.I will do my best to set up a full day of activities sometime in July.
6/23/2014 7:55:19 PM
I'm a NRA certified handgun instructor and Range Safety Officer. I'd be happy to help out with a intro beforehand as wellMy wife will be in attendance next time most likely. [Edited on June 23, 2014 at 9:21 PM. Reason : .]

if someone can get a deal on a sheet of ar500 steel and get it cut, id be glad to throw in. it needs to be cheap enough to sway me away from ebay.
6/23/2014 9:56:19 PM
i believe i sold someone on this site some steel plates, AR500.i have a family member that got a big sheet cut up. ill ask them if they have anything left and price.i wonder how many of the 12 inchers i could flat rate box?i believe they have a couple 24 inch squares too...im no where near raleigh though.what does the price need to be to be competitive?[Edited on June 23, 2014 at 10:47 PM. 6/23/2014 10:42:16 PM
3/8" x 12" rounds and squares are ~$50 shipped on ebay, and the 8" rounds are ~$25 shipped. They also have 1/2" and 5/8" gongs for about 1.5-2x that price. I don't really have anything big enough to beat up 3/8", much less 1/2", so the cheaper stuff works for me.[Edited on June 24, 2014 at 5:00 AM. Reason : .]
6/24/2014 4:56:22 AM
If anyone has a line on an M&P 342 or a 342PD, I would be very interested.
6/24/2014 7:02:17 AM
instead of metal plates, get a big cardboard box (like a refridgerator comes in) and cover it with party balloons spaced out every foot or so. it's fun to shoot them at 400-500 yards and watch them pop in your scope almost a second later.I happened to be out of town this last weekend, but I'd love to meet up for another shoot sometime.
6/24/2014 9:03:40 AM
My friend's dad offered to sell me a Weatherby Mk V (in .270 WBY) for $950. It's a Japanese made Mk V, which I guess is apparently even more desirable than the German or American built ones. Should I go for it?[Edited on June 26, 2014 at 10:46 PM. Reason : ]
6/26/2014 10:34:51 PM
expensive ammo. brass is kinda hard to find.
6/26/2014 10:40:12 PM
yeah i'll have to look and see exactly how bad. I won't go running tons of rounds through it. that's what my Creedmoor and AR are for.
6/26/2014 10:47:22 PM
few bucks a round, i think
6/26/2014 10:57:36 PM
Just checked Ammoseek. Looks like $1.70-1.80/round. That's not meaningfully different from anything else in that class, actually. Not meaningful for the volume of shooting I'd ever even conceivably do with it, at least.I'm more concerned with whether it represents a good deal. Just at a glance on Gunbroker, it looks pretty good. I'm also concerned with how well a 20-30+ year old rifle (I'm guessing) would shoot. Mark Vs are well known for accuracy, but that game has come a significant way since that time. I don't need it to shoot third or half MOA like my Savage, but I'd be disappointed if it ended up being a 2 MOA rifle.
