yeah, that was a bad giveaway, but cameron (solely responsible for the first goal) lost his man badly on the cross. I thought bradley played well this game, the missed goal notwithstanding.

I am disappointed in Bradley. The US has done well despite him having two absolute shitters.

That Jones goal though, what a beauty.

Heartbroken but very very very proud. Had tears at the end because it was oh so close and now we have to hope for a result against zee germans. To the random dude at London Bridge that consoled me I love you man! So close. Come on USA!

How is Cameron getting a pass, wasn't he beat for both goals?

2 of our best players had crap games, at least Dempsey and Howard were great

If history tells us anything it's that we are going to lose by Germany by more than 2 and Ghana is going to win and indirectly knock us out of the third World Cup in a row.

I don't think Cameron is getting a pass, unless you expect calls for his starting spot. It's clear he was directly responsible for the first goal, that was a howler. The second goal, Varela got ahead of Johnson and surged in behind Cameron (who was watching Ronaldo) to head it in. That cross was just amazing, Varela's fresh-legs run was great, and not many centerbacks are contesting that. There were a couple times he was one-on-one with ronaldo on a potential counter and contained him very well. A poor game mostly because of the first goal, but he's been too solid overall to drop.

This World Cup is insane. So many comebacks and end of game goals. The way things have gone it wouldn't surprise me if we beat Germany.

Awful way to drop 2 points but we had no business getting 3 vs Ghana so it levels out.

Just love that we can play attacking football against a top European side and dictate the match. Awesome to see.

My fiancé had just commented on how she didn't see the big deal about this Ronaldo guy and I was explaining how he is generally selfish and won't pass the ball and then he fucking goes and does that... Can't deny it was a beautiful ball but seriously fuck that guy.

^I really don't think Portugal deserves the right to be called a top European side, to be quite honest. I went into this game seriously thinking we could get 3 points as long as we denied Ronaldo from even getting the ball, which we mostly did. The stadium was full of Brazilians who had an odd kinship with Portugal (I don't think even US fans would support England in that fashion?)

Anyway, the Portuguese behind me kept chanting "Cris-ti-ano Ro-nall-dooo" (to the tune of seven nation army). Every time he sailed a shot wide, I countered with the same chant of "Cris-tiii-aaano Ro-NADA," and the fairweather Brazilian fans ended up joining me after the second US goal. And then the 95th (5 minutes, seriously?) minute happened, and the silent Portuguese contingent behind me waved their flags in my face....and I pretty much had to shut up.

Sucks that we left 2 points on the table. I'm also kind of disappointed in Bradley. Cameron, well....he is what he is. Not exactly a bevy of options back there.

Hope this works:

Side note, on the way to the match, a random Brazilian family invited me and my friends to a barbecue with them in their backyard and fed us steak and some home cooked food while watching the first two games outside their home. Pretty cool.

If History tells us anything it is that Germany is totally cool with throwing games to get to the next round. In 1982 West Germany scored on Austria to take a 1-0 lead. Going into the game both teams knew a 1-0 West Germany win would send West Germany and Austria through and eliminate Algeria. Oddly enough, West Germany scored and then neither team tried to score after that and just passed the ball around to run out the clock. That is why the last two games of each group are now played at the same time. If the USA and Germany do this on Thursday then we both advance with 5 points. With the way Belgium has been playing, I am totally cool with finishing second. I would love to see both teams throw the game so I can relax.

I tried to sleep on it, but it didn't work.

I just can't get over how bad Bradley has been. He better play the fucking game of his life vs Germany. The worst part is that we are playing well despite him sucking balls. If he can turn it around at all we could be very dangerous.

That is all fine and well, but if anyone from the German side suggests they would be ok with a draw you damn sure better take it and be happy. Portugal knows they likely need a large margin of victory to advance and in the end that may let Ghana counter them all night long and if Ghana wins we are probably going home unless Germany throws us a bone.

I have a hard time seeing Portugal throwing the game just to spite the US especially because

A)They could still eliminate us if they blow out Ghana (and Germany destroys us which isn't all that unlikely)
B)Ronaldo has scored 0 goals this tournament vs Messi's 2.

The real tragedy is my daughter's kindergarten graduation is at 12:30 on Thursday.

Right I expect them to try and win but they know it has to be a large victory so they will be pushing and likely result in Ghana getting the counter and winning in the end. It is definitely not going to end in a 0-0 draw or 1-0 game thats for sure. If it gets to the second half and its like 2-2 or something and its obvious portugal are going to be eliminated dont be surprised if they give up a soft 3rd goal though to send us packing if they know we are losing to Germany.

I don't know why this thought process would go through anybody's head. Why would a professional athlete want to intentionally lose a game in the World Cup??

Because since forever there have been some pretty obvious results created simply to advance or send a team home? One would hope thats not the case but it wouldnt be any more unlikely than Germany doing the US a favor if the game is tied in the last 10 minutes and just playing it out for the draw. In the end people care about advancing.

yeah there are plenty of games where a tie or something benefits both team but losing intentionally doesn't do anything for Portugal. I mean I just don't get that logic. "Well we're tied. Might as well lose to this team so that team we tied previously doesn't advance"

The whole team may not have that logic, but all it takes is one player to have that logic and you can let a goal in pretty easy. It may not even be intentional once players realize they arent going to advance its pretty easy to stop trying as hard and give up. They may not intentionally let a soft goal in but like most people once you stop having a reason to play hard you are naturally gonna let off the gas a little.

I guess moral of the story is unless we get a result with Germany I expect Ghana to send us home for a third straight world cup.

I can agree with maybe losing the motivation a little bit. I just don't see the intentionally letting in a goal thing. But after the way their first two games have gone, I would think players would have a little more pride in themselves and country to not just give up in a World Cup game. You may never have another opportunity.

I agree that Ghana looks stronger but Portugal is also getting Pepe back. I also have to think keeping Ronaldo off the scoreboard 3 games in a row is unlikely. We'll see.

"The point here isn't to knock Ronaldo down a peg—he really did pay $83,000 for a child's brain surgery. It's also not to make you feel like a sucker if you bought the story. This isn't just feel-good glurge, but something specifically designed to make you feel like a jerk for laughing at the Portuguese's ridiculous hairdo. It probably spread so much because it works like a good urban legend, giving a deserved comeuppance to the shallow. That said, don't believe any Twitter account's inspirational diarrhea just because it has "World Cup" in the name, and remember that it's always OK to make fun of Cristiano Ronaldo's hair."

Brazil and Chile have the most raucous fan bases at the WC without a doubt. It would be an awesome crowd if the two of them should meet in knockout play!

Robben looks like he should be playing for Portugal/Uruguay with all that diving nonsense. I don't like this referee one bit.

For today's games, I believe that Costa Rica will ironically win the 'Group of Champions', even with a potential loss to England, due to goal differential, unless they get destroyed by England, and/or either Italy or Uruguay have a huge game.

I am rooting for Uruguay to finish second. That would continue to stack all of the South American teams on the same side of the bracket. I assume Columbia will win their group for similar reasons as Costa Rica (big GD lead and connot be passed in points).

The bracket will unfold to be:
Brazil v Chile plays winner of Columbia v Uruguay.... suddenly the World Cup breaks out into a Copa America tournament
