Built a swingset for my kids from scratch and with $15 internet plans. Did it in about 2 weeks in April with the help from my dad. Had to modify the plans some, but it turned out great. Just waiting to put a tube slide on the right side, once the start shipping again. Will also replace the yellow slide with a longer wavy slide because it was too steep. Had to get creative with the slides I found on facebook marketplace.[Edited on June 17, 2020 at 3:44 PM. Reason : .]

I sewed this camping hammock for backpacking and such. Got a tarp ordered, but might sew a more basic tarp of my own to go with. We'll see.https://photos.app.goo.gl/8RUigD4yMVQnXszJ6https://photos.app.goo.gl/uT7zhrByKmM3BEdL9

Made a reel stand for pulling some Cat 6 at home. The 19" rack I ordered has been delayed by Texas weather
2/20/2021 10:39:23 PM
The guys who pulled some Belden Cat6A for me just ran the handle of a conduit bender through the center of the spool and hung it under an 8-foot ladder.
2/23/2021 2:32:22 PM
I don't have an 8-foot ladder.I cheaped out and went with Cat 6 over 6A. I didn't think it was worth the additional cost for a DIY home network with limited length runs.
2/24/2021 1:35:47 PM
I went with the Belden Cat 6A because I wanted to be guaranteed future proof for 10 GBE and I also happened to be able to snag a spool off eBay for <20% of retail. That's stuff can be more than $1/foot which is crazy.
3/1/2021 1:38:13 PM
Do you anticipate a need for 10GbE beyond future proofing?Cat 6 supports 10GbE up to 55m, which is long enough for what I'm doing. I'm hoping for HDBaseT at some point. Doubt I'll ever actually need 10GbE.-]
3/2/2021 1:39:18 AM
It's future proofing, but I'm sure I'll move that way once 10 GBE prices drop some more. Maybe I'll do 2.5 or 5 GBE first. Modern SSDs will saturate a 1 gbps connection. It's a crap shoot about whether or not cheap CAT 6 cable will allow 10 GBE speeds or not. So, since I got a good deal, why not go with name brand CAT 6A guaranteed to work at 10 gbps.WiFi is getting faster, but still tends to use 1 gbps backhaul.

Re-did a bathroom for our house that we're about to sell and tried a lot of stuff I've never done before since it's not gonna be our house much longer... turned out much better than I expected thohttps://imgur.com/gallery/D3kGhgy

Previous home owner built a freestanding shelter for his dog pen. A 12x12 concrete pad with a roof over it. Pretty simple. I want to redo it to make it look nicer, keep a grill under there and some outdoor furniture, nothing fancy. The roof needs to be replaced on the existing structure. He had 4x4 posts in each corner with a 2x6 beam (idk what the right terms are) running between the posts for the rafters to sit on. The 2x6 is pretty clearly sagging and over span. I figured i could replace the single 2x6 with 2x8s (or even 2x10s) sandwiched together and sitting on top of the 4x4s. The 4x4s seem to be in good enough shape that I’d like to just leave them if they’re sturdy enough to support the roof (just a basic shed roof sloped back). Just looking around online I’m seeing a lot of people suggesting 4x6 posts or even 6x6. That kinda feels like overkill for a 12x12 lightweight roof, but I’m no engineer. Any thoughts on the 4x4s?
1/28/2022 11:28:35 AM
If there is minimal snow load I would say the 4x4 are fine for corner support of a slope roof. I have 6x6 every 8ft supporting an entire house.

Hey thanks! It’s been a while since I posted this and haven’t made any progress on the project. Very minimal snow here in central NC. Now I just need to find time to actually do it.

I posted in the bat house thread in Lounge, but I built a bat house last year and definitely have some residents this year!/message_topic.aspx?topic=595216&page=2

Installed a couple of pulleys for hoisting the ski box into the rafters above the garage door. Ended up with about 5" of clearance. I may add a worm-gear winch to make it easier for me to raise and lower by myself.

I built a screen to deal with a nasty pile of dirt and rocks. And I replaced a rock with some steps.

Looks good. Even though when your kids practice karate there, they won't be quite as tuff.
8/14/2024 2:51:37 AM
True, but they do have ready supply of clean rocks to bean each other with.

Old gas water heater failed. I have 2, but I didn't need both so 1 was off. The one that failed developed a leak. I go to turn on the one I'd left off for years only to find the burner assembly had failed. Swapped the burner assembly from the bad tank to the good one. Replaced the bad tank with a heat pump unit. Added a breaker and ran a line. Tied pex into the existing copper and added a tee to an existing hvac condensate drain to add my water heater condensate drain. Saved about 2800 over having a contractor do it and I got a sweet new dolly and some pex tools out of it

I just rebuilt my back deck. Some of the PT boards had started to rot, so i first got quotes for resurfacing with composite.Quotes were >$15k, $15.5, $24k, all with mid-level Trex or TimberTech.I decided to do it myself. Replaced all the joists, from 2x8 to 2x10, and from 16OC to 12OC.I expanded the deck from 12' to 14' deep, for a 18'x14' surface. All in, lumber, top tier fully plastic decking, aluminum railing, paying my FIL for labor assistance: $14k.
