^yeah thought so. I'm hoping it gets fixed soon with a new driver. It's only slightly noticeable but enough where i could tell a difference from vista. Windows 7 came with some cool wall papers.

Attn: NoenThis isn't limited to Win7, but I didn't think it was worthy of it's own thread. Does anyone notice when you're forcefully disconnected from mstsc -- if you reconnect from the same instance, you have to restore the window and maximize it again for keystrokes to register?

anyone else had problems with the windows media streaming service? i can't remember the exact name of it but the button in control panel to "turn on media streaming" didn't do shit for me. i had to open up the service in computer management and change the log on account and something else that i can't remember in order to get it goingi was about to throw a damn controlled at my xbox 360 last night bc i couldn't get my video to stream.
9/8/2009 4:38:02 PM
I still use TVersity to stream to my 360 and I use a MediaPortal install defaulted to my secondary display (Vizio) for my bedroom.I love the media extender feel and UI when I have it running on my 360, but it's definitely not 'pirate friendly'. Why can't everyone just accept the mkv container and let us stream our x264 rips seamlessly?! If it's good enough for the scene it should be good enough for everyone else god dammit!!11 Though I did read something about DivX jumping on board and their mkv playback integration. Yeah, definitely knew h.264 was possible (most easily through the HD WMA nonsense correct? which some groups have petitioned for acceptance and others release anyway).I guess ignorance is limiting my ability to comprehend what happened regarding the container timeline ie AVI[DivXviD]/MPEGx/MOV/etc. where MKV is now making it so difficult to enable natively. Is on the fly transcoding the only way we're going to approach a seamless mkv stream with MCE?PS: I don't know if MOV streams or not, I was just throwing it in as another example.
9/8/2009 5:54:38 PM
everyone should just stop being gay babbys and use WMV for everything. Silverlight runs on everything worth using and IIS smooth streaming is hot shit better than all this gay as hell flash crap. For release groups, wmv should be the prefered container since it plays on just about everything.

No idea if it will stream to extenders, but it's worth a shot.

i wish you could use win7 as a win7 media center extender. my xbox360 is loud and no way in hell i'm gonna buy a dedicated hardware extender
9/8/2009 6:36:27 PM
^^ Oh no doubt, it works flawlessly on my Win7 MCE box, but I love Media Portal's TV-Series and Moving Pictures (bous back me up!!) too much to drop it for MCE.^If your 360 is no longer under warranty, you can flash the firmware to lower the read speed, though I am not sure if the performance : noise ratio is worth it.Extenders are and have always been my issue. Like I said, I fucking love the interface and I've even installed a couple of transcode360 plugins to keep it, but as of late TVersity has me by the balls.[Edited on September 8, 2009 at 7:22 PM. ^It's been briefly touched on in the Ultimate HTPC thread.http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=524493&page=8Basically the two plugins are interchangeable with each other (one for tv other for movies obv) and they allowed me to effectively scan and tag over a TB's worth of media with every possible file naming scheme with 95% accuracy. For stragglers, the ability to add your own variables and manual tagging is a click away.Once tagged, as seen -- it downloads the art, presents it in a cool amazingly intuitive UI with poster view or various synopsis views (updated in quasi-real time) and will even auto-hide episode summaries not marked as viewed.I tried a few MCE plugins that claimed to do the same, but I have yet to find one that is as accurate and painless as the aforementioned. Directory structures and file names remain untouched. But yeah, running off into tangent-land here so we can continue in the HTPC thread, which you actively post in so maybe you can be persuaded to take a look at this front end?! bous is involved in the TV-Series development and could probably explain the process much better than I did.[Edited on September 8, 2009 at 11:15 PM. Will windows 7 utilize all 4 cores in a quad core processor?

Yes.Just a quick google:http://windows7info.net/news/multi-core-operating-system/
9/10/2009 2:11:52 AM
Noen, i have a serious question for you: do you think the massive disk space requirements of win7 are justified (16gb for 32-bit, 20gb for 64-bit)? this comes from a brief discussion in the netbook thread comparing the sizes of different OSes (XP at 1.5gb, ubuntu at 3gb, and snow leopard at 5gb)it seems that the development team spent all their time making win7 into what vista should have been in the first place but decided it was easier to make it huge than to make it disk-space efficient...and yes, i know and agree that disk space is cheap and so it shouldn't matter that much...but still, 20gb seems a bit on the high side
9/10/2009 1:21:28 PM
I've read that the printer drivers alone accounted for nearly 1GB of disk space... for Vista at least. I'd rather have the hard drive space back and use the disk that comes with the printer or Windows update for the one driver I'll need.Still, that would only get you down to a 19GB clean install.
9/10/2009 2:43:21 PM
Is anybody using ReadyBoost? I have a 2 GB flash drive I don't use ever, so I'm gonna stick it in the back of my desktop and see if it helps at all. just curious how low to set my expectations
9/10/2009 3:01:23 PM
^^ yeah...they should allow you to choose how much you want to install (i'm sure there's a way to change this, but i'm talking about doing it by default, like an advanced install option)...i'd be more than happy to just dl any driver i need, or pop the vista disc into the drive if no intarweb is available^ do you have 2 more gigs of ram? if so, set your expectations pretty low
9/10/2009 3:04:35 PM
why is there no option to show "all programs" by default on the windows 7 start menu? is this another case of microsoft telling me what's best for me? yes, yes, i realize all i have to do is click "all programs", but that's one click more than should be necessary
9/10/2009 7:50:10 PM
windows key + starting typing the program name = 0 clicks
9/10/2009 10:15:05 PM
I'm sorry, but anyone that thinks a 20GB OS in the age of 1.5 TB drives for $90 is a serious question is just looking for a fight.
9/10/2009 10:23:25 PM

well i found the first casualty of hardware that won't work in W7. My Canoscan scanner, although in it's defense it didn't work very well in Vista 64 either. I tried installing manually and automatically and Windows says there is no compatible driver so looks like I'll need a new scanner. Its ok I think this was a good one for 6 years...

Windows 7 StarterThe least-featured edition of Windows 7; the Windows Aero theme is not included, and it won't be available in a 64-bit variant. This edition will be available pre-installed on computers through system integrators or computer manufacturers.[6][11]Windows 7 Home BasicWindows 7 Home Basic will be available in emerging markets such as Bangladesh, Brazil, People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand.[12] It will not be available in countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.[12] Some Aero options are excluded along with several new features.[12]Windows 7 Home PremiumThis edition contains features aimed at the home market segment, such as Windows Media Center, Windows Aero and touch-screen controls.[13]Windows 7 ProfessionalThis edition is targeted towards enthusiasts and small business users.[14] It includes all the features of Windows 7 Home Premium, and adds the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain.[14] Additional features include operating as a Remote Desktop server, location aware printing, Encrypting File System, Presentation Mode and Windows XP Mode.[14]Windows 7 EnterpriseThis edition targets the enterprise segment of the market and will be sold through volume licensing to companies which have Software Assurance contract with Microsoft.[15] Additional features include support for Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packages, BitLocker Drive Encryption, and UNIX application support.[15] Not available through retail or OEM channels, this edition will be distributed through Microsoft Software Assurance (SA).[15] As a result it includes several SA-only benefits, including a license allowing the running of multiple virtual machines, and activation via VLK.[16]Windows 7 UltimateWindows 7 Ultimate contains the same features as Windows 7 Enterprise, but unlike that edition it will be available to home users on an individual license basis.[17] Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional users will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for a fee using Windows Anytime Upgrade if they wish to do so.[8] Unlike Windows Vista Ultimate, the Windows 7 Enterprise edition will not include the Windows Ultimate Extras feature or any exclusive features.[17]Europe editionsIn response to European Union antitrust investigations, plans were made to ship all editions of Windows 7 in Europe without Internet Explorer included (referred to as Windows 7 E).[18] However, due to negative reactions from computer manufacturers over the plan and backlash over plans not to ship upgrade versions to Europe, the E editions were scrapped in July 2009.[19]Microsoft had previously proposed a "ballot screen" to solve the anti-trust problem.[20][edit]N editionsInstead of the "E" versions for Europe, Microsoft have still gone ahead and released versions called "N" ("Not with Media Player"), which ship without Windows Media Player on them in the European market, but only for the retail editions; Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate.[21] This follows what they had to do for later releases of the XP and Vista operating systems before them, following demands from the European Commission previously concerning anti-competitive or anti-trust issues. However users still have the choice whether to buy the standard (non-N) version as they wish, and they are priced identically to the standard versions. This is likely to lead to very low sales of these N editions, just as reported for XP and Vista, as most users would rather make the choice themselves at a later date, if at all.[22][23][24][25] [26]It is unclear whether some similar-to-N versions will be released in South Korea, as the authorities there also made demands on Microsoft regarding such issues on both XP and Vista.gotta love me some eleventy billion editions of one operating systemOr just one.

kdawg(c): In the US there is Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. The "E" editions are gone, it's all consolidated. As a consumer you'll never see Starter/Basic/Enterprise.And personally I like having the choice to save money and not be forced to pay for everything whether I use it or not. But that could just be me.Kind of like how there's a Macbook, a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air, huh? Why not make just ONE GIANT laptop for everyone?
