I have to ask...did you break your hand punching something after getting the news ?Because I've seen it happen before
9/23/2009 11:35:11 AM
nope...i broke my hand over a week ago
9/23/2009 11:38:59 AM
Got a call two weeks ago from a corporate recruiter, and have since been through 2 phone interviews, a personal interview, and another phone interview. Last one was Tuesday morning, and I haven't heard back from them yet. Getting kinda worried that they're not interested
9/24/2009 10:30:46 AM
So for my last four or five interviews, I've felt like I was over-prepared for the interview, and I still didn't get the position (and sometimes not even a second interview). I have a [first] interview tomorrow morning and instead of the usual 3-4 hours of preparation, I'm giving myself an hour to an hour and a half. good idea? we'll see.

if anyone wants a low paying job thats 40/hrs a week, let me know
9/24/2009 5:07:38 PM
I just lost my job last Thursday. Nothing spectacular, but it helped out considering I run my own business and theres so much upfront cost in it for the first few years until I get everything running smooth. I was only making $7 an hr at this other job (nope, not even minimum wage), but 40-50 hrs a week was pretty simple considering I could do whatever I wanted during that time, including other part time jobs online and sewing which put $500 or more a month in my pocket. The bad part of this is that I live in Roxboro, which just made TIME magazine due to it's unemployment woes.
9/24/2009 5:20:25 PM
I'm doing OK now I guess, but I realize I probably permanently ruined my fiancee's career by taking this job and moving. 9 months, $600 in licenses fees (for 3 states), hundreds of applications (many of which are rejected immediately even when she meets all requirements), several interviews, daily crying sessions, and nothing to show for it.And all anyone can tell her is that it should be easy and there's a shortage for nurses. fol

Ergh, almost three months (end of the month). Been on three interviews in three months, fail. Had one this week that actually looked possibly promising, but of course, the job description had two design tasks listed, one of which I have experience with and the other, not really. It was worded where it sounded like 50/50 of the two tasks. Once I sat down to the interview, she made it clear that they were looking more for the design stuff I didn't have experience with (of course). Ugh.And no unemployment benefits possible. Le sigh.
9/25/2009 8:37:33 AM
I started this beast of a shithole thread and I got a job.but its at Whole Foods.carry on.
9/25/2009 10:23:56 AM
Do any of you have numbers on how many interviews you get back per resume submission and how many offers per interview? I've had the same job for a touch over three years but I send resumes out fairly frequently to see what's out there.
9/25/2009 12:52:04 PM
1:5 trillion
9/25/2009 12:56:38 PM
^^Unfortunately, it isn't possible to divide by zero.
9/25/2009 1:29:17 PM
Is that looking for anything or is that you have a directed resume for a specific profession?
9/25/2009 1:43:58 PM
9/25/2009 2:04:23 PM
i'm probably pushing 30 apps per interview over the past year for jobs in my field. i've applied for a few other jobs but never had a call back[Edited on September 25, 2009 at 2:05 PM. Reason : too high]
9/25/2009 2:04:56 PM
so reading through the postings, i take it the job market is not too good in Raleigh and surrounding areas right now?
9/25/2009 2:11:09 PM
it's not great, but it depends on what you're comparing it to and what kind of job you're looking for
9/25/2009 2:15:06 PM
just more of a general curiosity than anything
9/25/2009 2:18:44 PM
the job mkt mega sucks if you were a poli sci major with a resume full of food industry
9/25/2009 4:47:28 PM
I mean, the market in Raleigh isn't great. It's the reason why I live in Virginia now. I got a crappy offer from a guy who was just trying to lowball the shit out of me (and I would've hated myself every single day that I worked there after all that). I make 50% more than he offered now working on ridiculously awesome shit with some people who are either fucking with me or acting like my proper boss.So yeah, I'm happy I moved and I'm fairly glad that I'm not in Raleigh, though my entire family is there right now and I kinda miss that. I've still got good people around here to hang out with.
9/25/2009 6:13:30 PM
I had to move out of state also. It kinda sucks, been here 2 years come the end of October. All my family is in NC. My brother just got married though and he I think lives about a hr away. We arent that close at all so I dont see myself hanging out with him. Although, my new sister-in-law's cousins I think would be a blast to hang out with, they know how to party.
9/27/2009 7:42:59 PM
I'm going to be searching for a job come next spring. You guys are making me thinking I'm sol for getting a job in Raleigh
9/27/2009 8:03:59 PM
depends on how you are searchingI don't think there will be any significant jobs in raleigh until about next spring, so you may be okay
9/27/2009 9:20:19 PM
Sort of job I'm looking for is only really done at universities so hopefully they will no longer be instituting hiring freezes.
9/27/2009 9:23:13 PM
Saw a quick blurb about unemployment tonight on the newsI believe they said there is currently 1 job for every 6 unemployed people
9/27/2009 11:59:44 PM
engineering/math/statistics majors.... is it normal for employers to ask technical questions during an interview to test my knowledge? If so how does one prepare for these questions and what should I do if I dont know the answer?
9/28/2009 12:20:15 AM
1. Yes?!?!??!2. Review the fundamentals a bit. You don't want to get caught not knowing the basic stuff.3. Say you don't know.
9/28/2009 6:19:37 AM
^^The first stages of some interviews are just getting to know you. The later stages will always be technical, but how technical and what kinds of technical questions vary a lot. Sometimes it's just more practical, like have you worked with X? What is something you did with X? Other times it's much, much more theoretical where you would have had to come out of your foundation classes with an A and really know it forwards and backwards. Figure out what books are considered to be really important works in your field, and make sure you know the material front to back.
9/28/2009 8:19:12 AM
thanks for the info. This is my second interview and Im not even sure if they are going to ask technical stuff, but they said to expect spending 3 hours there, so Im thinking that is what will happen. Pretty confident I can answer the questions clearly and concisely, but Im worried Im not going to remember stuff.
9/28/2009 9:19:09 AM
The interview for my current company wasn't technical but the interview for the last company was very technical and there was only one interview.
9/28/2009 10:17:17 AM
My entry level interview included a written test. It was 10 pages long. Really it was the interview that they cared most about. The test was just to see where I'd need training and get an idea of how long it would take to get me to be up and running. It also means don't let them catch you in some bullshit during the interview that's going to be revealed when you don't have an answer on the tech side.
9/28/2009 10:42:54 AM
goin on six months
10/1/2009 11:57:53 AM

10/1/2009 2:25:41 PM
congrats!to follow on my post that you quoted. The same week of the final interview they lost 2 big clients (this was a marketing and PR firm) and when we got the call we thought would be some good news...they called to tell her the position had to be scrapped for now and that they would contact her if/when things improved :/
10/1/2009 2:44:03 PM
Has anyone tried using Progress Energy's "external gateway" job search lately? It times out on me everytime I try to go to it.
10/1/2009 7:20:17 PM
I have not read this entire thread...but I have a question. Is it ok to apply for multiple jobs within the same company if you are qualified for all of them (they all are very similar to each other) or do companies think my god this person is annoying lets go ahead and trash it immediately?
10/1/2009 8:07:24 PM
Rhodes, I've used the PE external job postings website. It doesn't time out on me, but I never get a response from them, except an email saying I wasn't selected.
10/1/2009 8:13:49 PM
^^ Apply to one of them and be sure to state on your resume what you are most interested in. If possible, send a cover letter stating your interests in all the jobs. If they like your resume, they'll interview you and decide the best fit.
10/1/2009 10:22:36 PM
depends on the company - if its big enough, you should definitely apply to all the positions. I know a number of companies in which the hiring manager is only allowed to browse the applications for the job posting that he himself posted (ostensibly to keep managers from poaching recruits from other depts.)
10/1/2009 10:29:22 PM
If the company is big enough, the hiring manager isn't even looking at the applications until the recruiter puts them on his desk.
10/1/2009 10:37:16 PM
hmm... not in my experience. but i'm sure there are all kinds of situations
10/1/2009 10:48:55 PM

So I've been interviewing for this job for the past 5 weeks. So far the process has been:A phone interview with an internal recruiterA phone interview with my potential bossAn personal interview with my potential boss/tour of the officeA phone interview with the VP of North America SalesA phone interview with the VP of Sales and MarketingA 2hr online personality testCan anyone think of any other possible steps or should I feel good about this? Maybe they'll want a picture of me in a zebra costume next?
10/7/2009 4:00:34 PM
Sometimes companies are required to put a handful of candidates through the entire process, even when they already have their candidate picked out, to protect themselves. However, I'd be willing to bet that you are their candidate. Good luck!
