you got me.I'd be surprised if downloadable HD gains any significant steam w/in the next 5 years. I could see it START picking up steam right around that time though.arbitrary time period anyway.it's semantics. My original point remains: downloads aren't a viable alternative for the forseeable future.[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 12:21 PM. Reason : d]
12/6/2007 12:19:37 PM
5 years before it becomes a technologically viable alternative to physical HD media for mass market adoption. 10 years before it replaces it completely if HD media ever takes off. If neither one of these formats ever gets adopted by J6P, then yeah, downloading HD media will be it. It's not a factor now though, and won't be for years.

^we're talking about new formats and future formats....not old school
12/6/2007 5:36:53 PM
ok because i was about to add cd-rom too
12/6/2007 6:54:30 PM
you mean those round discs that music used to be distributed on?
12/6/2007 7:05:20 PM
without reading this thread at all...what should a I buy?A) PS3B) X-box 360 an an X-Box HD-DVD playerMy decision is solely based on whether blue ray or hd-dvd is going to win out
12/6/2007 7:45:31 PM
you should wait because no one knows which format (if either) will win.if you have to buy something, just buy whichever is cheaper, A or B (A is cheaper)[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 7:57 PM. Reason : s]
12/6/2007 7:56:05 PM
just buy which ever has more movies you like.that is if games aren't even a factor.if you want more good games to chose from then go xbox360...but thats all relative depending on who u ask.

its ok, chance will be chance. there really isn't much of an explanation to it.

Or, I mean, you could get the 360 Arcade ($280) along with the HD DVD drive (~$180) for about $460.But you know, either way, really.
12/7/2007 2:06:12 PM
or you could take out the additional controller since you have no friends and will be playing alone anway.
12/7/2007 2:14:21 PM
Or get the 360 arcade, and a Toshiba A3 with 10 HD DVD movies for about 560$
12/7/2007 2:57:21 PM
I wish some of these cheapie HD-DVD players had 1080p output, I'd be all over that.
12/7/2007 3:46:20 PM
These are the numbers from the weekend after Black Friday. There weren't any particularly strong titles released from this week, however it has been the first week in a LONG time that there were more HD DVD titles released than there were Blu-ray.I also noted a few weeks ago that Planet Earth on HD DVD had had a big spike on the Amazon charts. Here we see that reflected.--------Also... Samsung BD-UP5000, Dual-format player shipping from Amazon for $800[Edited on December 7, 2007 at 5:42 PM. Reason : Samsung BD-UP5000]
12/7/2007 5:35:38 PM
Fanatik, yea I think dual formats is the way to go now.Just reality.
12/8/2007 12:38:10 PM
^I don't see a good reason to buy a dual-format. You could buy a player for each format totaling $700 and then sell one of them if/when the winning format becomes clear.
12/8/2007 2:10:42 PM
Dont assume I'm advocating going purple.
12/8/2007 3:10:52 PM
so ive been told you can convert from hd-dvd to bluray
12/8/2007 3:16:19 PM
hmm... i dunno - are you sure that binary data on one medium can really be copied over to another medium??just doesn't sound right to me, for some reason
12/8/2007 4:13:26 PM
^^define "convert". You can't play an HD DVD in a Blu-ray player, and you can't play a Blu-ray disk in an HD DVD player. You can hold everything you would have on an HD DVD on a Blu-ray disk, since the latter has more space, however the HD DVD spec is more demanding than Blu-ray profile 1.0, so you can always be sure your HD DVD player will have an internet connection, and you'll always be sure you can have picture-in-picture commentary for HD DVDs.

^ A sucker is born every minute. Didn't Grady the Badger teach you anything about selling stuff?
12/9/2007 2:27:08 PM
you can rip an hd-dvd and burn it to blu-ray.it is possible and not even that difficult
12/9/2007 2:52:01 PM
Or you buy a player of each which is cheaper then getting a burner for either.

Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next (Blu-ray)Yep, Bourne is HD DVD exclusive, and should sell very well. Rent is Blu-ray exclusive, however it will probably sell more in the long term, rather than spike when it's released... but the big seller this week will be Harry Potter.
12/10/2007 12:25:40 AM
Now that I have both players. I actually think I'll get Harry Potter on Blu Ray instead of HD DVD and get Bourne along with it. (HD DVD of course)

Toys R Us is now selling the Xbox 360 HD DVD player for $130. Probably hard to get one though.http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2538552

I finally got around to watching spider man 3. That is probably , ok it was, the worst film I've seen this year. I love how one quarter of it is a fall out boy concert. Leave it to you guys to find any kind of merit in that film.I will say you are an optimistic bunch.I apologize for being off topic.Warmest Regards[Edited on December 10, 2007 at 8:14 AM. Reason : .]

12/10/2007 8:53:51 AM
it was FREE. and anything FREE can't be that bad. However, when I paid $9 to see the movie in theaters, it was the worst movie I'd seen all year.
