^, ^^ Similar situation here. I always wore asics and had success (kayano, lighter weight shoes for racing). I happened to stumble across a running shoe store on vacation where they watched you run and recommended shoes based on your stride - ended up with some mizuno waves and have to say Im impressed. Theyre very nice and Ill consider replacing the asics moving forward.

over the past 4 weeks i've completely changed my running stride... it's been pretty painful changing it, but i'm so much more efficient now it's awesome

it should take you a lot longer to change to midfoot running without injury~ close to a year4 weeks isn't gonna cut it

you should definitely alternate between your regular stride and midfoot running for at least a few months before trying to do every run without heel strikingforget no pain, no gain, that doesn't apply heredefinitely build up to it

It's not midfoot - well that's not what they call it. It's more pose. So changing my posture, lean and pull.

About two months ago I was running on the sidewalk when my shoe hit the manhole covering. I tripped and somehow did a face plant on the sidewalk, skid up my knees, palm of my hand (from around wrist to center of hand, hurt for awhile), upper leg, side, lip, and chipped a tooth (front tooth). I think I might buy some nice running shoes. Right now I'm using some Nike running shoes, but the heel brushes against the inside of my ankle, sometimes leaving bruises. I run on gravel and rocks, so I need something that will give me protection. I'm also pretty flat footed Iand don't know if I should take that into account as well. I was thinking of getting some Vibram Fivefingers. Is there any other kind that would be better?

if you're dealing with rocks and gravel i wouldn't go with the 5 fingers.the nike free are really popular though

Careful with changing stride, it really does take awhile. I upped my cadence from ~130 to ~170 over a couple months and went a little too hard. I was landing a bit far forward on my forefoot strike and ended up spraining something on the top of my foot. 6 weeks of PT for the pain to fade. Really need foot strength, and I run in minimalist shoes all the time and don't have it.Buttttt..on the shoes, I like the Inov 8 155s as a "sort of" minimalist shoe. It has a small drop and the cushioning is nice, and they are super light. Think my VFFs are heavier.^, with Vibrams you will feel and hate crushed gravel.

I don't have the time at this very moment to read through the whole thread, so apologies if this has been covered...What, if any, tracking/logging/mapping software or sites do y'all use. The Suunto I use was "intended" for use with movescount dot com, but I was already on mapmyrun, and didn't think movescount looked better - at least not so much as to warrant switching sites. I got tired of gmap-pedometer, though occasionally I'll use it to quickly plan a route ahead of time if I am trying to get a certain mileage in. My husband has one of the older garmin forerunners, but I haven't dabbled too much with their tracker yet. What say you people? What do you use and why?[Edited on July 2, 2012 at 11:45 AM. i do the nike app, and i just switched over to doing it with GPS and no longer using the chip in my sneaker.i'm a fan.

^^Strava.com. I use it for Cycling, but it works for runners too. Best logging site out there IMO + it has a competitive twist to it if you lean that way. I use a Garmin Forerunner. The Garmin connect site is ok, but I use Strava instead. Very simple, but it wouldn't work to plan out certain mileage routes.

I use whatever Garmin Connect is. I have one of the medium-cheap models (Forerunner 210) that takes care of all that for me. Speaking of rocks, I did an 11 on Umstead this weekend. Used some my nonVibram minimalist shoe and had a pressure-like pain in the middle of my left foot on the 9th mile. Had to stop for awhile and I can still feel some pain there if I put a lot of pressure on my foot. I'm really hoping I just stepped on some rocks wrong and bruised it a little. Had something that looked like a giant round black bumblebee chase me for a mile, constantly orbiting me. I managed to get a few hits in but it came back. Managed to lose my car key on this run too! If anyone does Umstead and comes across a car key, let me know

^ If you aren't all that used to minimalist shoes or if you are starting to push the mileage, that could be tiny stress fractures. Apparently it's pretty common with minimalist/barefoot running. When I started back up running recently, I pushed the mileage too far too fast and I had some of the same soreness you are describing.

Yeah I think my plan is to use the minimalist shoes in <5 distances, and get something a bit thicker for everything else.It could also be my technique is a little different. I think I'm getting more of my midfoot to hit the ground now I've had these shoes and vibrams for a couple years, but my technique changed significantly ~1.5 years ago, and slightly since. I used to manage to heel strike on Vibrams, which somehow didn't cause problems until about 9 miles or so. Trying to up my cadence from mid 170s to mid 180s because I definitely slow down after I get tired.

did 8 miles this morning. tried out the compression sleeves. oddly helped on one leg, didn't help on the other. so we'll see how the next few runs go.it was also a heat index of 96 by the time i finished. sucked so bad.

Did 8.55 around the Kelly drive/art museum loop this morning with my group that's training for the rock n roll half this september. Started off at 7am, had to stop and refill my bottles a couple of times and I'm so glad I brought my chillydana, I tied it around my neck and it felt so nice and cool!My legs are sore right now though

^^^^ Just came back from PT haha. I've done the Vibrams and other minimalist shoes. I want to read that book but I'm coming off from my minimalist high. Even with the right form (I'm really close I think), I get tons of injuries running distance in them. <5 miles is fine, running a half with them was great, but constant training runs with those just mess me up. My coach and PT said I probably don't have the 'foot fat' to handle them for long distance, and I'm inclined to believe them. I've spent the better part of a year working on my running form and foot strength, but I got two different foot issues over the last month. I don't know how everyone else doesn't get these issues with minimalist running (or barefoot running, I talked to a guy who did a Raleigh half barefoot :/).

I've raced with compression calf sleeves on, and then I wear them up to 72 hours post-recovery. Definitely helps after cycling, too. If anything else, it helps to stabilize the calf muscles and prevent some of the jarring after effects of running. I've got both medical grade and athletic compression for when I'm on my feet all day, and I can say the athletic grade are more comfortable. Both are ridiculous to get on.

I ran for the first time in three years this past Friday. Two miles. It went pretty well. I've been swimming for four months now, so my cardio was good.One thing I realized was my lower back muscles were SUPER TIGHT (because of my L4-L5 fusion in December).Anyway...the next three days...I could barely walk.Running in these (brand new, hence the running):
