I think it'd be fairly easy to do The Long Halloween as the next movie and just tweak out the Joker's involvement. It'd fit the mob storylines, the involvement of Catwoman as a love interest and not a villain, and the general noir-ish feel of this series of films. Then again, TLH relies on a ton of villains, most of which haven't been introduced in these films...so maybe not. ]
7/19/2008 3:48:03 PM
there's no way in hell they'll bring back the joker as another actor. they'll probably just allude to him being locked up in an asylum and that'll be the end of it.
7/19/2008 4:06:20 PM
i truly think the third one, much like the first 2, is not going to be based on a previous work at all, but rather an amalgam of influences coming together to wind up the trilogy.we may not even get a new villain.we may still see crispin glover or javier bardem take the mantle of the joker.who knows, at this point.
7/19/2008 4:07:27 PM
I don't think anyone would dare try to take over this version of the Joker.I wouldn't rule out a peek through his cell window at Arkham to a dude in the shadows in the makeup, but no one else is getting that speaking role.
7/19/2008 4:27:40 PM
^agreed
7/19/2008 4:29:24 PM
another possible scenario for the next villain I have read about is Mr. Reese, the guy who was going to out Bruce Wayne. Mr. Reese sounds alot like "mysteries," possibly implying the Riddler. That's a pretty big reach though.

There haven't been any huge canonical name changes as of yet, I can't see them making the Riddler out of anyone other than Nigma.^ We're talking about two entirely different continuities and two entirely different Jokers. No one else can do this part, and there's no reason to with the number of viable characters in the Batman universe. ]

I do a very good Heath Ledger Joker impression already. Maybe they can hire me.

This was an awesome movie. Heath Ledger certainly carried this movie, I got the feeling early on that Ledger studied a lot of Nicholson's Joker. Still, he managed to turn the Joker into his own character. Awesome performance. The rest of the acting was simply outstanding. My only minor criticism was I thought it ran a little long, but there really weren't any scenes that could have been cut. (well, that and the sound was about 50dB louder than it needed to be, but that wasn't the movie's fault). A++I really wish they would let this particular Batman franchise stop here. I get the feeling a third installment would result in something akin to the third matrix or worse. ****Spoilers/Comments****-What exactly happened to commissioner Gordon? Either they never said or I missed it the part where they explained it. Was the mob in on faking his death? -The scenes where the Joker put himself in suicidal positions kind of creeped me out, given the fact of Ledger's death. Especially when he puts the gun to his head in the hospital scene. ****end spoilers****[Edited on July 19, 2008 at 5:34 PM. Reason : one more thing. ]

Anthony Michael Hall is in it!

I heard the "cat" quote from freeman and thought about catwoman but just figured it was coincidence only..i like the theory someone said earlier about Mr. Reese turning into riddler...i could definitely see them going someway with that, given his knowledge of batman's identity. However, i wish they would just end it here. I think the 3rd one could turn into a spiderman 3 or "we are trying too hard, but want the money"
7/19/2008 7:20:46 PM
i don't buy that reese will become anything more. i mean, bruce wayne (whom he knows to be batman) saved his life, and he suddenly becomes a criminal mastermind with a vendetta? no way.
7/19/2008 7:23:48 PM
I loved the scene where the plane took Bats and Luo away from his building. It was done in Dr. No many years ago, but this was much more bad ass.

^it was Thunderball
7/19/2008 7:44:35 PM
hol-ee shit that was amazing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. This is nearly impossible to top. The sheer number of stunts and improvisations the Joker pulled off was staggering. And it was a dark, very grim movie. So many people died, so many reversals and betrayals took place. A lot of times there was crazy shit going down and the Joker just strolled on through the chaos. If Nolan does the next Batman he really has his work cut out for him.Oh and I'm definitely going to see it at IMAX.What's everyone's take on "the note"? It'll likely never come up again, but it adds an interesting dimension to the love triangle.[Edited on July 19, 2008 at 8:07 PM. Reason : .]

Lets try to get an answer for the 3rd film. Here is the problem I see. After this one being so good, how in the hell do you make a better film or get a better villain? What could possibly be a better villain in a 3rd film?I dont think it can be done. And that bothers me. It also makes me think that Nolan might not do another movie based on limited material. Can anyone make a case for any other villain being nearly as good?side note: I LOVE the fact that he lied about his scars twice. No back story is what you have to have to accept the Joker as a given. Nolan is a fucking genius.[Edited on July 19, 2008 at 9:14 PM. Reason : side][Edited on July 19, 2008 at 9:22 PM. Reason : v]

R'as Al Ghul.. we didn't see him die. Lazarus pits. Talia. Bring in Bane properly and have them try to ruin Gotham again. But with a plague. Or something.
7/19/2008 9:19:15 PM
SPOILERS (select to read)It's not that often that "the girl" dies and she would've actually ended up with someone else. She's almost always in love with the hero. Bruce still thinks she could've ended up with him and only Alfred (and Two-Face) know the truth.

^^ We really need to see a broken back!

I had high expectations for this movie, and was not let down at all. To paraphrase what Batman said near the end of the flim, "people need to have their faith rewarded." I know mine was. There's not really anything that I can say that hasn't already been said, but it's worth reiterating that NOBODY will ever make a better Joker than Ledger. His performance was absolutely perfect. Bale and everybody else gave well-done, crucial performances, but Ledger was pure money. He was on a whole 'nother level, and it is a crying shame that he can never come back to do another film.I saw this with one of my friends, but he hated it on the grounds that the Joker portrayed anarchists as insane or something. This isn't the first time he's done this, either. I really wish he'd take off his political/anarcho-libertarian glasses when watching a movie, especially one as awesome as this. This is the last time I'm taking him to the movies.
7/19/2008 10:13:57 PM
someone we saw the movie with said they'd recorded footage of the joker to be used in the next film. if it's true, then maybe the next movie isn't lost afterall.
7/19/2008 10:32:01 PM
Saw it tonight. Loved it.Before tonight, I didn't think anyone could pass Nicholson's Joker, and 1/3 or so of the way through Dark Knight, I still couldn't see what was supposed to be so great about Ledger's performance. But as the film went on and he seemed to sink further and further, I was really impressed. He definitely carried the whole movie--it felt much more like it was about the Joker rather than about Batman.I just hope they don't fuck up the next one like Spiderman 3, X-Men 3, Batman Forever, Superman 3...will Nolan be the one to buck the trend?

^Really? I thought it flowed very well and was set thoroughly through the dialog between Bruce/Batman and Gordon and Harvey/Two-Face in the respective characters. Throughout the movie, they all conversed about what they thought Gotham needed, and how it could be achieved. And it was very appropriate of how Bruce/Batsy decided to just be Bruce b/c Gotham had a true "White Knight," and how Batsy discussed with Harvey when Harvey had the criminal one on one. It was excellently pointed out and easy to follow IMO. III[Edited on July 20, 2008 at 12:03 AM. Reason : .]

i have a certain opinion on a matter but i won't type it because ill just get flamedoverall i really liked it, i was rooting for the joker the whole time and at one point i was thinking how awesome it would be if he was carried over in the next movie, but then i was like "O YEA D'OH"anyone else think, when he had the nurse outfit and the red wig on that he looked a lot like brittany murphy?

it was supposed to be bad from the beginning, though. there was no sense of danger at the start of the film. in fact, they made it seem as if the majority of the "bad guys" were running scared and things were better than they'd been in ages
7/20/2008 2:15:51 AM
all I have to say is...WOW!
7/20/2008 2:16:46 AM
Despide Ledger's Joker probably being "darker" than Nicholson's, Jack's killed far more people during the movie than Ledger's.
7/20/2008 2:54:05 AM
Batman: The Dark Knight is so far beyond Tim Burton's simplistic interpretations it's unbelievable. Burton and Company were making live-action cartoons; Christopher Nolan and his cast were making art. And the late Heath Ledger's performance was nothing short of brilliant. He managed to find and bring to the screen the very essence of the Joker, while simultaneously reinventing the character--Jack Nicholson merely aped a caricature. Ledger deserves at least a posthumous Oscar nomination for his Dark Knight performance, and I actually think he should be awarded the statuette. In any event, it's satisfying to see studios and filmmakers finally realize that most fans want to see serious interpretations of the various superheroes' mythoi. It's long overdue.
