5 more days before i change jobs, i'll lose about 90% of my processing power [Edited on March 14, 2005 at 9:16 AM. Reason : .]
3/14/2005 9:15:45 AM
leave it on the comps when you leave
3/14/2005 10:50:18 AM
that my sir, is exactly what i plan to do when my contract expires.

anyone else running fahcore_96? it's currently using 368MB of RAM right now on my desktopon a P4 2.4C with HT, it's currently taking 1% every hour, meaning this ONE work unit is going to cost me 4 days, and consume nearly 350MB while it's doing it, i swear this better be worth 1,000 pts for this work unit (250/day)[Edited on March 14, 2005 at 10:28 PM. thanks to bobbydigital for fixing this thread
3/14/2005 10:39:08 PM
^^Not currently on my home rig. You can set it not to accept large WU's if you don't want to use that much RAM. I hope your new job is for the better. Thanks for everything you have done.

yeah, i'm going from a small local firm of 6-10 to an international firm that has 25 branches with their own IT dept.i'll be selling my laptop at home soon, so i'll probably lose some processing power at home as well, that is until i upgrade my P4 2.4C to an AMD a64 3000+ (in a month or so)glad i could help a good cause and be on a great team go pack!don't worry the sig's aren't going anywhere [Edited on March 15, 2005 at 9:39 AM. Sorry to hear you'll be losing production, but don't worry. Give me a couple of weeks and I'll be able to pick up your slack.I have 50 or so brand PC's in boxes at one of my schools. All that we're waiting for is maintenance to clear a room for them.
3/15/2005 4:17:55 PM
well i started my new job this week and left the f@h running on the old computers.... here's to hoping whoever finds it won't know what it is...just added an a64 machine cranking out 3 WU's a day, hoping to add 210pts/day from it
3/26/2005 10:48:11 PM
^^Congrats for breaking the Top 500 users.^Nice.
3/28/2005 10:04:34 PM
What the hell are we doing on page 3 of teh tech talk? I just added 30 more 2.8ghz P4's today. That should bring my active processor count to right over 60. We'll be moving back up the charts in no time....
4/5/2005 4:01:32 PM
Sweet, look forward to the jump.
4/6/2005 7:15:34 AM
haha, i still have no real idea what this stuff is about, but the climbing numbers are kinda exciting, hahaha-ZiP!-
4/6/2005 2:16:26 PM
I'm still on...pumping out my whopping 20 pts / day average. I lost my 5 2.4ghz P4s that were keeping me afloat for so long. Oh well they stayed on the computers a good 3 months after I left my last job, so that's not too bad.Might be adding an Athlon 2500+ to the mix soon. These 833mhz PIIIs at work aren't cutting it

ahhh, everything is going according to plan...
4/7/2005 8:34:22 PM
We jumped two spots to 81! ^ What happened to your 30 P4's? You don't have the service terminating after 72hrs do you?We also hit 3,000,000 as a team this month![Edited on April 11, 2005 at 10:12 PM. Reason : 3mil]

contemplating adding F@H to the servers at my work and putting them on the lowest possible priorities
4/11/2005 10:02:11 PM
I think it already operates at the lowest priority. You can always throttle back the CPU usage if you want.
4/11/2005 10:08:17 PM
still working things out... some of my machines were fubarred remotely (some idiot playing with the Altiris console, argghhh)... be patient, it's on the way.
4/11/2005 11:32:26 PM
No problem. I was just wondering what happened. Fold on!
4/12/2005 7:17:58 AM
Doh one of mine lost config and went to default folding without user/teamBack online now with it and one to add overall
4/12/2005 7:06:04 PM
It's growing increasingly harder for me to keep up with all my machines... I'm short about 10 and I have no idea where they are...
4/12/2005 7:25:50 PM
got the three servers up and running at 75%
4/13/2005 11:12:17 AM
just signed up, name is NCSUBOB hope to put it on my laptop as well and a computer at home thas on all the time bob
4/13/2005 9:40:21 PM
^^^Can you use EMIII to monitor them?^^Great work! We should see your stats spiking soon.^Good to have you aboard. We look forward to seeing you in the stats.
4/13/2005 11:01:11 PM
Nah, I cannot install EMIII locally; the clients must remain transparent to the users (which happens to be mostly 5th and 6th graders). I'd do it network based, but that just seems like a pain. We run Deep Freeze on the computers, so its pretty easy for me to login to the console and see if the machine is on (generally if it's on, it's folding). It's easy to identify which machines are working in a lab, it's hard to track down individual machines I joined to our collective.Fah does make one hell of a burn-in test though, and not just for the machine it's on. A room of P4 machines gets HOT when they are running full bore; we've got the AC in here trying it's best to keep up...
4/14/2005 7:32:18 AM
Well, if you have to throttle back during warmer weather, we understand. Fold On!
4/14/2005 9:24:44 AM
yep, stats are already spiking!oh, and I think the servers might be multi-proced. should I worry w/ multiple clients or what?]
4/14/2005 9:18:43 PM
Yes. To take advantage of each processer, you have to run a separate client in a different folder and assign it a unique machine ID from 1 to 8.
4/14/2005 9:27:16 PM
okay...KRUZNBY, give me a quick rundown of all of this...i read the first page, but i'm not reading the 22 between page 1 and this page...my desktop (3ghz p4 w/ 512 pc3200) at home just sits there almost all day until the evening when i get on it again...this folding thing will just use my processor to run simulations? what if i want to burn a dvd (sometimes my machine gets VERY picky about other programs i'm running) or want to watch tv on my comp? will this thing cause any problems? where do i go to sign up?
4/14/2005 9:33:55 PM
^ It runs at the very lowest priority. It gives priority to everything else, essentially it only runs at idle times. You'll be able to install it and not even know it's there performance wise, I guarantee. You can start by visiting http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html and picking a client. The client of choice is the 5.02 console version. After installed, it runs completely in the background. Fire and forget style. After you download the proggy, put it in its own directory (c:\fah, for example) and open a command box and go to that location. Run 'Fah502-console -configonly'. Pick a unique username, and enter our team number, which is 59. If you are using win xp or 2000, answer yes to installing as a service. Just press enter through all the other steps. Then run services.msc and start the FaH service. It sounds like a drawn out process, but it's relatively painless.
4/14/2005 9:58:59 PM
awesome...i'll join tonight
4/14/2005 10:04:32 PM
i'm not so sure about the "no noticeable effect" thing... cause my computer a work has the thing throttled to 75%, but whenever I try and switch to a web browser or something like that, it takes FOREVER. turn F@H off and it fires up quite nicely. My mom's computer is similar. The common thread is that the machines that have trouble are XPHome's, though. My comp at home has a small bit of trouble switching back to netscape, but nothing drastic. its XP Pro. my boss's computer has pro, and aside from it being totally fucked, everyhting switches nicely.in short, the only real trouble I notice is switching between applications (though only really bad in XP Home). full logon time is a bit slower, though...not trying to discourage you. just letting you know what you might encounter
4/14/2005 10:30:05 PM
^ I guess results may vary. In my experience, it has worked fine.
4/15/2005 12:11:11 AM
personally i've never noticed any change...i use both XP home and XP pro
4/15/2005 10:26:59 AM
any idea how to EDIT a service? i want to run FAH with some options as a service, but i don't see where to edit it. registry maybe?
4/15/2005 11:45:27 AM
Yeah it's in the registry somewhere... search for '-svcstart' and you'll find it. That's the argument passed to the console to start it as a service.
4/15/2005 12:38:02 PM
welp, got two of the servers running multi-proc-ed now. each server has two processors, and I have the set to run at 75%
4/15/2005 7:31:28 PM
wow, 800+ pts yesterday. those servers are really paying off! as long as there is no degredation of performance for the business, there'll be no problem otherwise i'll throttle down to 50%, but with each server having 2 proc's and 2GB of RAM, there should be no problem... about to break the 3600 mark, too, in users. Didn't notice until today that I broke 100K
4/17/2005 1:27:21 AM
^ Congrats.
