you don't need a 5320 to take a suppressor or AOW across state lines, assuming that they're legal in the state you're going to. You're also misinterpreting the ATF FAQ with regards to possession vs control. An 8" upper in my safe in NC while I'm in VA is in my possession but not in my control. If you don't travel with the shorter upper, then you're not able to reconfigure the gun as an NFA item. This has been discussed ad nauseam on multiple forums.as far as the information from my lawyer, he's done a ton of NFA trusts in the Wake county area and is very knowledgeable of the laws regarding them.

Is there any reason I shouldn't buy my wife a Kimber Solo for Valentine's day?
1/19/2014 11:59:00 PM
kinda expensive for something that is only a carry gun. not gonna be any fun at the range. there are cheaper itty bitty single stack 9mm options that would serve you just as well. if you're ok with that, then rock on.
1/20/2014 8:09:43 AM
Well my s&w shield .40 is too much for her and she is scared of it. She can shoot the G19 okay, but apparently it's "huge" and "chunky". I was thinking a metal frame single stack 9 might fit the bill. The kahr mk9 looks nice too. I wish I could let her rent one first.
1/20/2014 9:02:23 AM
how does she intend to carry the weapon?
1/20/2014 9:08:04 AM
I want it on her person, but in all honesty Im sure it will end up in her purse
1/20/2014 9:31:47 AM
Then why go so small? Why not a Glock 19 or M&P 9c?
1/20/2014 9:46:19 AM
FWIW, I love my Kahr PM9 and wouldn't hesitate to buy a different model of their pistols. Not saying to get the PM9 because that is just a carry gun as well and if she is going to keep it in her purse you can get something a little bigger anyways.
1/20/2014 9:46:44 AM
i'll also add that i've found that when women are "scared" of these type of guns, the problem is usually not solved by finding another gun. it's solved with training and learning to manage recoil.

Glock 19 was my first instinct, but she wasnt having it. She could shoot it but I doubt she would carry it. She says she will just stick with pepper spray but I keep telling her it isnt good enough any more. She definately needs more range time, I know. I may go shopping this afternoon.
1/20/2014 10:23:43 AM
Sig 938, or 238 if she is really recoil sensitive.My 938 replaced my Glock 27 (.40) for daily carry.[Edited on January 20, 2014 at 10:32 AM. Reason : .]

i guess what i'm getting at is if she's willing to just say "fuck it, i'll just carry pepper spray if i've gotta carry a Glock 19", then she doesn't have her mind right yet.in order of importance:1) mindset2) skillset3) toolset
1/20/2014 4:53:09 PM
I dunno. I think the G19 is pretty much the perfect middle-of-the-road semi for anyone including grandma, but I guess it just wasnt her style. I understand. My dad has this awesome 8" revolver and it shoots great but I would feel ridiculous carrying it around in my glove box. Iwould feel like I need to put on boots, hat, and spurs or something. I think the Glocks were just too policey for her. I could tell she felt stupid holding it. In the store one day she seemed to like the PPK and I tried to tell her that 380 was inadequate, blowbacks recoil more than they should, and she would stop shooting it after the first slide-bite which they are notorious for. Then the douchebag sales clerk says "thats what James Bond had" and I could tell she was all impressed. I know it shouldnt matter, but it does. I want her to like it enough that she will actually practice with it and enjoy the challenge of improving her aim/trigger control.
1/20/2014 4:59:48 PM
like i said, it's obvious her mind isn't in the right place[Edited on January 20, 2014 at 5:07 PM. Reason : doesn't really sound like yours is either]

I agree with what you say about mindset. I feel like the people who best understand the necessity of self reliance in personal protection are those who have needed to for their career (LEO and military) or those who have been victims of violence in the past. My wife isnt part of the former group and I dont want her to ever be part of the latter. Instead, i have tried to ease her into it by getting her to enjoy the sport of plinking with an sr22. Now, its time for a real carry piece. V-day is an excuse for the purchase. As far as pepper spray is concerned: If she were young and single that might be fine. She could spray and run. Now, we have two kids. You cant run with a 10 month old in your arms and a 3 year old holding your hand. You must stand your ground, thus things that temporarily incapacitate are no longer sufficient. We live in New Orleans and shit goes down every day. I just want her to have the ability to protect herself when im not there.
1/20/2014 5:27:09 PM
Get her a pink revolver and move on.

1/20/2014 6:51:56 PM
anywayi'd let her try a commander size 1911. don't be all "omg, .45 hand cannon, crazy recoil" or any of that gun shop bullshit. you could even try one in 9mm if that really makes you feel better. i find that most of the recoil crap is in folks' heads.
1/20/2014 6:51:57 PM
I feel like my friends 1911 kicks much much worse than my G21.
1/20/2014 7:57:48 PM
the difference between my govt size 1911 and my sig P226 is negligent. both are much easier to manage than my LCP. heavy is the way to go, especially if you're carrying in your purse.

I just got shipping confirmation on my DDLES Glock lower. I ordered it 6 months ago ( while being quoted 4 week turn around). Still better than the 10 months I have been waiting for my NFA stuff.
1/24/2014 7:26:34 PM
My full siZe 1911 recoils harder than my 3.5" XDm 9mm, but it isn't bad at all. It's only a little more.My Kel-Tec P3AT in .380 is far, far worse.

I'm up for my first CHP renewal (Wake). Do I have to fill out all 3 forms (application, health, & fingerprint)? WTF am I supposed to put for health care providers. It asks for every provider...Also, is it a one-time thing, or do I have to go back later to pick up my new permit?[Edited on January 26, 2014 at 6:27 PM. Reason : .]
1/26/2014 6:12:09 PM
ha, i have no idea what i'd put. i've been to a general physician 3 times in the past ~8 years. one of those was the campus doc and the other two were an urgent care place.
1/26/2014 7:07:32 PM
http://www.wakegov.com/sheriff/divisions/pages/concealper.aspxYou don't have to get new fingerprints for a renewal, so I wouldn't think that you would have to fill out the form. And if it's like Wayne County, your new permit will be exchanged for your old permit within 30 days.[Edited on January 26, 2014 at 7:17 PM. Reason : asdf]

does wake mail out initial permits? i've held a CHP in four different NC counties now and only one of them would mail me a damn thing. i had to go pick up my initial permit in Wayne. Person and Moore made me go up there and pick up my duplicate. Person allowed you to pick it up 24 hrs a day, which was cool. I refuse to try and carry a 8.5x11 sheet of paper proving my address change, so i always get a duplicate. Pender actually mailed my duplicate to me.

Its nothing special at the factory MSRP and I wouldn't pay what they are going for on GB, but I got a factory connect which makes it much more attractive at the VIP price. However, compared to my SA Loaded, the fit, finish, action and trigger are much better. Plus, you get the front strap checkering (that's about a $200 fix at SACS), melt and checker on the speed bump. I also like just a single tritium up front, because three dots nights tend to screw with my contacts. Its a good looking gun too. I may keep the Loaded and carry it as a duty gun.

I just renewed my CHP in Wake about a week ago. You have to fill out all three forms, and I had to get re-printed because my old prints didn't come up in the computer, but the lady said that doesn't happen often.I filled out all three forms. I put the name of the last doctor I visited, which was a few years ago for a physical. They mail you the permit.

I just moved from a house in Wake Forest Jan 1. Gun safe is now in my parents shop/garage. Havent really been in the safe in a while, but looked in it tonight and noticed that my S&W AR-15 and Ruger SP101-22 is missing. No damage to the safe, so it was not broken into. Nobody knows the combo (not even my wife) but myself. My parents have had construction happening in the garage for the last few weeks. I'm thinking that its entirely likely I could have accidentally left it unlocked, and a worker decided to grab a gun or two. Got a police report, and gave the serial #'s to the officer. I have firearms coverage at my house in VA, but I dont think there is anything here at the shop. What are my next steps? Pretty much nothing? Guns were a...Ruger SP101-22 with Hogue Grip and leather holster. New, less than 200rnds through it.Smith and Wesson MP15. Magpul tan stock, magpul tan grip, 20rnd black magpul mag, RAA chrome BCG, Troy 13" Alpha Rail, YHM Flash Hider, Bushnell TRS-25 red-dot in mount.Keep an eye out.

Any recommendations on a leather gun belt that can be worn with a suit?
1/27/2014 8:02:08 PM
Without going custom, I've worn a couple of DeSantis belts and haven't had a problem. Most days, I just wear a normal dress belt (paddle holster, ok dress belt and properly tailored pants = fine).[Edited on January 27, 2014 at 8:21 PM. Reason : ...]

I wear a 5.11 double stitch leather belt. At 1.75" wide, it is a dressy belt, but won't fit suit loops usually. They do make a 1.5" version. Have you looked at Beltman belts?
1/27/2014 9:51:11 PM
I second The Beltman belts. Custom and local. I own a couple from him. I've bumped into him at the grocery store a couple of times.

Gun safes... we have a toddler and another on the way. we are getting a pistol, and would like some recommendations on how to keep it secure, yet available if we want to use it. I've seen a couple of "quick open" gun safes on the market, but are they worth anything? If i'm going to have a gun for home protection, i want to make sure i have quick access to it but also make sure the kids can't access it. Can someone with more gun experience give me your thoughts on the matter?
1/28/2014 12:39:18 PM
I have the shotgun version of http://www.shotlock.com/Very happy with it. Secure enough from those who shouldn't have access and from less inclined thieves.
