Also just noticed that the Daily Tarheel has the transcripts linked as pdfs. Curious as to if this is a FERPA violation since the paper is funded by the school.

^^ "yeah. that's only as far back as we want to look. come on, guys!"

how stupid are these people? you expect can maybe understand this idiocy out of a wake tech fanboy with access to peppers' transcripts but why are carl carey and holden thorp running their mouths and digging the hole deeper?don't get me wrong, it's way more entertaining this way but I can't believe we aren't getting "no comments" as they try to sweep this under the rug
8/13/2012 5:41:16 PM
If this transcript is actually peppers', then there is exactly zero chance this gets swept under the rug. Breaking federal laws isn't a joke. But I don't think the DTH could get in trouble, since they didn't release the records. They are acting as members of the press and reporting what was publicly available information.
8/13/2012 5:55:53 PM
they wouldnt get in trouble anyways...the only thing that can happen in terms of FERPA is the school losing federal funding. The biggest thing that can come of the transcript at this point is if he was ineligible and played basketball & football, vacating the wins from that/those seasons including any championships/. even by playing ONE game.sure, the federal funding hurts...and adds to the academic side...but this may be the link that we have been waiting for in terms of linking it to the scandal.
8/13/2012 6:03:42 PM
None of that can happen until this transcript is proven to be real. That's why them breaking a federal law is a big deal to me. I don't care about funding. It will get investigated. If they are punished, that means this is actually peppers transcript. At that point the NCAA can discuss how this guy only maintained eligibility by taking a shit ton of no show classes. It's pretty obvious unc isn't afraid to mislead/lie to the ncaa and the general public, but I doubt they do that in a federal investigation. Maybe if they weren't so worried about releasing parking ticket records, they would have deleted this shit off the internet.[Edited on August 13, 2012 at 6:20 PM. Reason : FERPA'd]
8/13/2012 6:18:06 PM
its been confirmed its peppers...it matches to 34/36 classes on his transcript and the only two that dont were incompletes.BTW...AFAM studies arent the only classes. There are more. This box UNC gave us as a Christmas Present is indeed, Pandora's.not only was Carey hired recently as a PROFESSOR, but he was there steering Peppers...you dont think that Carey had many many more classes just like this?Peppers couldnt pass Algebra...the classes he got A's and B's in were frauds as well.[Edited on August 13, 2012 at 6:29 PM. The NCAA is notoriously efficient with these things so I'm quite surprised they haven't gone judge, jury and executioner in the 8 hours this story has been out there.

The multiple no show classes story is only 8 hours old? Oh, my bad.Edit: For some reason people are acting like this only got real with JP's transcript.[Edited on August 13, 2012 at 6:50 PM. Reason : -]

I think that article is very critical of emmert/the ncaa because of how harsh they came down on penn state (who broke no ncaa rules) when they are sitting back basically doing nothing to unc (who has basically been caught doing every single thing possible against the rules).

I guess I had made the assumption that the basketball program was implicated as soon as it was determined that the african american studies classes were a fraud and that many bb players took those courses. That's to say the whole JP thing isn't anything new with respect to bb, it just shows that the fraud may extend back further than expected.

To my knowledge UNC claimed, and I guess people bought it, that that was restricted to "rogue" department heads. To me, this new information makes that impossible to claim and links a football AND basketball player back to 1999 having this done. That kinda makes it clear that it has to be a systemic abuse throughout the athletic department over multiple college "generations."[Edited on August 13, 2012 at 9:02 PM. Reason : x]

8/13/2012 9:21:27 PM
That's actually a valid point. Now if me or you were put on a D-1A football field we'd probably get physically hurt, but it's not a terrible analogy. These morons who can barely read shouldn't be in classes with the likes of valedictorians and even 3.5 high school students. That doesn't excuse UNC in the least, of course. But it's not the players fault that the system is rigged the way it is. I'm sure it's not easy on really dumb guys like Peppers.

^^So back in 2007 someone in UNCCH's IT Department was tasked with putting together screen shots of one of their "Track what you need to graduate" systems. Since Julius Peppers was apparently a piss poor student, someone in IT copied the resulting HTML file from pulling up his transcript into the Student Information Services ("/sis/") directory, with the plan of duplicating the file, editing some of the ensuing contents, and putting the edited file up as a sample. It's a very common computer programming technique to save time -- take an existing file, duplicate it, modify the duplicate, delete the original. Except three things went wrong: (1) the original never got deleted, (2) the /sis/ directory was never password-protected, and (3) they never even put an index.htm file in the directory (which loads on default whenever the directory is viewed in a web browser). So anyone typing in "https://www.unc.edu/sis/" prior to today would get to see the entire directory contents themselves in a list view (the default when there's no index file), and apparently could have done that at any time in the past 5 years. Google also had the ability to crawl the directory without a problem. Not a pissed off employee, just an utterly incompetent employee [Edited on August 13, 2012 at 9:44 PM. Reason : ---]

^^^^ if that's what you took from my statement, then you must have logged onto the wrong account, face. im not saying kids should turn down scholarships "cause they're too stupid." I'm saying that if your intention is not to "embarrass athletes who can't keep up in class," then schools shouldn't introduce students into an academic environment in which they can't possibly succeed. The school is to blame, not the student. Then again, it's not like most of the athletes in question even give a rat's ass about school, anyway.^^ if you've learned anything through this "investigation", it's that everything that went wrong over there was the result of a "rogue" element of some sort. therefor, this latest episode must be due to a rogue IT person.]

N&O article updated to include BOG quotes. http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/08/13/2266292/transcript-in-unc-probe-may-be.htmlBurley Mitchell, a former chief justice of the state Supreme Court and a member of the UNC system Board of Governors, said “the whole thing disturbs” him.“The entire program over there has been an unguided situation,” Mitchell, a graduate of N.C. State, said Monday. “It doesn’t seem like anybody’s in charge.”Further troubling Mitchell is that it seems that all the revelations are being uncovered and exposed by the N&O and Pack fans, not the UNC-CH administration and trustees.“It just seems to keep coming and coming,” Mitchell said. “I wonder who is minding the store.”The fraud is now the subject of an SBI investigation and a special review by the Board of Governors. The NCAA continues to offer no clues as to whether it will investigate. The university’s internal investigation is also continuing, and a special faculty committee, concerned that athletics have gotten out of control at the university, has called for an independent review.Louis Bissette, the chairman of the special Board of Governors panel, said Monday the panel will delve into the latest revelations and any that follow.“All I can say to you is we really mean to do this right,” he said, “and we mean to do it thoroughly and we mean to look at all relevant material.”Read more here: http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/08/13/2266292/transcript-in-unc-probe-may-be.html#storylink=cpy
