0-4 against the worst coach in the ACC. Not saying he should be on the hot seat, but this team should make the tournament this year in a down league.

we beat Wake like a month ago. Manning is easily a worse coach than Pastner.

Yeah 0-4 vs GT isn’t good. But pastner isn’t the worst ACC coach at all.

He lets Pastner own him. Hope he can do something Monday about Ole Roy owning him.

He’s 1-3 vs UNC and UNC has finished ranked in the top 10 both years. UNC sucks this year. But I’m not gonna fault KK for having a losing record vs a top 10 program.

Presumably would need to win 2/4 from Duke (2x), fsu and Lou and win out otherwise to have a shot at the tourney

Not great for your 3rd season

Starting a list of who owns Keatts. Pastner is on the list, Roy is definitely on the list. Hope it doesn’t continue to grow.

Tonight was the worst loss in Keatts era. 9-10 UNC team beats us easily without two best players.

You can't really claim the record and the injuries as two separate complaints, Anthony has barely played this year

a very bad loss for sure, but if it wasn't UNC - which does make the loss feel even worse - i would say last year to GT at home was a worse loss to a worse team...especially considering it was the last game of the year and GT had nothing to play for. but yeah - this loss feels really fucking bad and quibbling over which loss was worse is dumb...

Can anyone tell me why Keatts would not at least try a zone defense against GT or UNC? Neither one was even remotely hitting from 3. UNC only took 9 threes hitting 2. Insanity to not try something different? Have we ever not played man in three years?

Defense is clearly the most pressing issue and not the disappearance of the offense.

^^Its not defense or offense specifically, its the complete lack of opponent-specific gameplanning in general. Our permanent gameplan just happens to be well-suited against UVA.

[Edited on January 28, 2020 at 7:29 PM. Reason : letting the other team's best player score easily definitely puts pressure on our offense and vice]

My guess would be that we don't spend any time practicing it. And before anyone thinks that not practicing or implementing zone is a sign of bad coaching, there are other M2M post-defenses that would fit our scheme better.

^^ Anyone who thinks we don't have a specific game plan and scouting report for any of our opponents needs to sit down. Perhaps DJ can offer a better explanation:
Quote :
"“We weren’t focused and we weren’t locked in,”"
So there was a game plan. The players just weren't executing it.

Yeah when your 2 senior guards aren't focused and are playing like shit, your offense tends to look like shit.

Wont argue there. And i think it's a valid concern that KK's 2 seniors, one of which came with him from UNC-W, are not focused and executing the game plan. There needs to be some accountability for this.

But to suggest that we just don't have a game plan is asinine.

Not having the team aware of Mcmahon's shooting and ready to play him correctly and then not adjusting until he hit 6 is one of the worst examples of coaching I've ever seen.

Next year is the make or break year for Keatts. We'll hopefully have a team with more than 6 ACC caliber players. Gonna lose likely 3 starters (I don't see Funderburk coming back at all, guy is built for the modern NBA) but get a full recruiting class. Anything less than a top 5 finish will be a firable offense.

Saying a top 5 finish in the ACC is mandatory is tough imo. We’re in a conference with UVa, UNC, Duke, UL. And I dunno what FSU loses, but Hamilton has them in a far better position than us. Top 5 would be great. I don’t think it’s realistic. I’d love to get there and build towards that. I just think it’s a lofty goal at this point - no matter who that coach is

This was the year for a top 5 finish with an experienced team and top scorers. Add that to a down ACC and we had the possibility to be really good IMO. That's why this team is so disappointing.

Next year, we have a (seemingly) great recruiting class, but realistically freshman don't dominate unless they are McD AA caliber and our guys ain't. I'd be thrilled to be 5-5 at this juncture next season.

mcdonalds all american selections are a joke and based just as much on which school a kid signs with as much as talent. both hall and hayes are good enough to be one and probably would have been had they signed with somebody like Duke, UNC or Kentucky. Putting a bunch of kids going to those schools on the team guarantees good TV ratings.

Hall and Hayes are rated around ~50. Theyre just as likely to be terrible next year as they are to be good

Hall is #36 on 247. He is not ~50. also UNC McD AA RJ Davis is #53 on 247 and somehow (LOL) made the cut. Everyone else in the game is ~top 30, so Hall is much closer to them than Davis is, and Hayes(#62) is closer to Davis than Davis is to the rest of the burger boys.

ok every year we talk about how unc has 8 mcdaa's and dont live up to that so lets put that arg aside

#36 last year was pretty good, isaac okoro. now he's not carrying auburn, but hes stepped in and started on a good team. only shooting 29% from 3 as a SF, though. seems like a realistically good scenario for hall

2018 that guy was david mccormack, who plays like 10mpg but at least for a good kansas team. 2017 was chaundee brown, who didnt really become a good player until he was a junior this year and then he got hurt

the guy in cam hayes' spot this year is at depaul and starting, but he's not good and barely touches the ball. the guy who was #63 went to australia and plays 1mpg there. 2018 guy went to LSU, didnt start his freshman year but was good as a big off the bench and is now playing good minutes and still about as good. the guy from 2 years ago went to minnesota and was awful there, somehow got a waiver after 2 years to transfer to iona and is decent for them

point is, you need a roster of guys like this to be successful. relying on 2 of them as freshmen to carry you isnt smart. you need to hit on the 80th or 90th percentile outcome of both to be a good team when theyre FR. when theyre juniors? sure, rely on them

So your argument against Daniels and Hellems improving is that they aren't good enough now, but your argument against freshman contributing is that they need to be older?

"Top 5" is pretty arbitrary and doesn't mean anything. He just needs to make the tournament to extend his tenure. That might mean top5 in a year like this but in a normal year 8-10 teams might make the tourney

^^^that's a really silly way to determine if they'll be good. I agree that it's dangerous to rely on all but like the top 10 freshman to comes in and be high level ACC ready, but you can't just pick 6 guys and say "see??" Beverly was barely even ranked and contributed right away, Bates and Hellems were outside the top 100 and contributed early.

Speaking of Bates, a full year of S&C should do him good, maybe make him a better rebounder and rim runner

yes, my point is that Keatts' recruiting and overall program building has been poor. the 2020 class is a step in the right direction, but its probably a year late, and it's more a building block than the program savior it was sold as a couple months ago

I figure Keatts having a “good” recruiting class buys him at least 2 more seasons, unless half don’t show up and half transfer which wouldn’t be surprising in today’s college basketball.

Hall is a postgrad and ineligible for the McD's AA game. But don't let facts get in the way of your hot take opinion.
