Quote :
"COLUMBIA — In the crosshairs of an NCAA investigation since July, South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders has now been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

The issue, two sources told The Post and Courier on Monday night, is that Saunders lied to coaches about why he was late for Saturday morning's practice at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Saunders, a senior, missed multiple team meetings Saturday morning, the sources said. He appeared at the stadium some time before the team's scheduled scrimmage, which began a little after 10 a.m.

Later, when coaches asked Saunders why he was tardy, Saunders told them it was because he was talking with NCAA officials. A quick check with the school's compliance office showed that Saunders wasn't telling the truth."

Quote :
"An NCAA investigator asked South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders about his friendship with University of North Carolina senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin, his online interaction with Austin via the social media site Twitter and a trip to Washington, D.C., according to Saunders’ father.

Barry Saunders, a metro columnist for The News & Observer, said Wednesday that Marcus Wilson, the NCAA’s assistant director in charge of agents’ activities, interviewed his son twice this summer.

Wilson, a former UNC football player, is one of seven members of the NCAA’s enforcement staff who work in the area of Agent, Gambling and Amateur Activities.

The NCAA also visited Chapel Hill this summer to interview North Carolina football players – including Austin – as part of an investigation into allegations of impermissible contact with sports agents. NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn declined to comment on Wilson’s interviews with Saunders but said Wednesday that Wilson is not involved in “an UNC investigation.”"

would love to know why wilson had two interviews with him and still qualifies as "not being involved"

Not sure how the NCAA could keep him from concentrating on school.....football yes, but school?
Hell it's not even keeping him from concentrating on football, he tried that excuse, didn't work.

But almost every team submits something (like that mentioned in the article) to the NCAA every couple years or so. The NCAA usually give the programs a light slap on the wrist like restricting their practice schedule for a couple weeks or something similar. So that article doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

That's encouraging, I think?

Odd that IC seems to have broken the story though. It'd be like someone from the Charlotte Visitor's Bureau telling you their city is sketchy.

Why do I get this feeling that this is just a smoke screen that UNC is throwing up? "Hey NCAA, we found an academic infraction. We're on top of this thing, so take it easy on us."

Sure, on it's own, the academic violations are not a big deal (unless it's something like tutors taking tests for students, see sports news for the ass raping that other school got for this... FSU, I think? Caused Bowden to give up a bunch of wins?), but put it together with the shit already going on at UNC this year, and you get a recipe for AWESOME disaster that's beginning to go from simmer to all out boil.

Someone else had a decent theory. The NCAA requests all these texts about the agents, and in the process of preparing them, UNC finds out they have a bunch of other shady stuff that happens to be mixed in. So they go ahead and self-report, but only because they're caught anyway.

I'm sure UNC would've never self-reported this stuff if the NCAA wasn't already snooping around.

And part of me feels suspicious that the NCAA will look favorably upon UNC being so "proactive".

I mean, honestly, can you make up a better case for "lack of institutional control" against UNC than what is happening right now?

No see, by self-reporting UNC can show that they still maintain institutional control.

Oh, and any guesses on the self-imposed penalties? I'm guessing one game suspension (against a cupcake).

^Why not suspend for the LSU game? They were going to lose that one anyway, now they have something to blame the loss on. "Well... those 2 guys that didn't play would have made all the difference in that 30 point loss."

Well, that's one way to look at it. But to them, this LSU game is supposed to be the springboard to the upper reaches of college football glory, so they want everyone they can get. Unfortunately they might not even be able to field a team at this rate .
